Part Two by Kate Novak
O'Doul's fingers twitched and grasped at Mary's hand. He clutched at her fingers with the grip of a drowning man. Mary had the oddest sensation that the heat of her body flowed like rushing water through her hand into O'Doul's. He moaned softly and the muscles in his body relaxed. "Are you all right? Mary asked again. O'Doul looked up at Mary, his hand still clutching hers. "Something's in me," he whispered. "What kind of something?" Mary asked softly. "Something evil," O'Doul replied. Mary's disbelief must have shown on her face for O'Doul continued hastily, "I know, I know it sounds crazy, but I can feel it trying to take over my body. You—you confused it when you took my hand. But it's still here. Waiting for me to drop my guard." Mary gave the man's hand a reassuring squeeze, not certain what to think, let alone what to say. O'Doul looked a little sheepish and released his grip on her fingers. "Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me," he muttered under his breath. "Who?" Mary asked.

The Shadow of Li Po: A Fiction Archive Round-Robin
The Danielsport Record was in an old building, though not as aged as the Hotel. Mary guessed that it was at least seventy years old, and in that time it seemed to have been modified numerous times. Several ground floor windows were bricked up, the colour was close, but didn't quite match the surrounding masonry. The front door was new, its simple functional look clashing with the red brick and white trim of the rest of the structure. Inside the floor was patterned linoleum, missing a few tiles in places, new ones replacing others in high traffic areas. Grand wooden stairs dominated the foyer, standing opposite an old cage elevator with an out of service sign. The lift was flanked by frost-windowed offices, department names stencilled on them in black. A light glowed behind one of them standing out in the silent, darkened building. Samuel Chase was printed on the door, under the name was on it, and it stood slightly ajar. She peered in, and saw a man hunched over a desk, his back to her. His hair was salt-and-pepper , and he looked quite thin. Mary knocked softly on the doorjamb and cleared her throat. “Yes?” The figure at the desk sat straight up, stuffing some things in a drawer and slamming it shut before he turned around. He had been a handsome man once, but the march of years and the stress of running a small-town paper had taken its toll, leaving the face creased and sunken. Dark circles hung under the bloodshot eyes, which only barely focused on her. "Ah! Miss Worthington! You have arrived safely! Excellent! Is Ginny treating you well?" He had stood up and offered his hand in greeting.

LI PO AND POETRY IN A BOTTLE
By Fiona Keyes Ishibashi-cho takes its name from a small stone bridge at a fork in the road spurring North from Matsue Castle. You could drive over it every day without realizing it is a bridge, lying as it does under succeeding layers of bitumen, but the old stone railing survives opposite a soba shop as you turn right at the fork. The Okudani River over which it passes now pales into equal obscurity, though it once bustled with communities of river crabs and fireflies. Until the not too distant past children fished from its banks and trapped dragonflies where it widens behind Junkoji Temple and Harada Sake Brewery. The little lane which tunnels through the middle of the Brewery will take you there.
When the bridge at Ishibashi was built most bridges were made of wood. Stone bridges were such a rarity that localities favoured with one would take their name from it. Thus Ishibashi. It is said to have been an artisans' town. The lattice windows of long-established stores line the narrow streets. The sweet store Omodakaya, established at the behest of the feudal lord Fumaiko Matsudaira, was located here, as was the cane worker Nagasaki. So too were those who made sheaths for swords and those who carved stone, the dexterity of the latter still in evidence in the dogs guarding the entrance and the lanterns and twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac lining the approach to Kasuga Shrine.
Another feature of Ishibashi is its abundance of temples. In times of war, temples in the Castle surrounds became bases on the front line, where soldiers were stationed in preparation for battle. One such temple, Senjuin, which stands on a rise in the middle of Ishibashi and is known for its weeping cherry blossoms, was moved here in the Edo era from elsewhere, following the construction of Matsue Castle. The streets of Ishibashi too were constructed with defence of the Castle in mind. From the little stone bridge the road curls between latticed shop fronts, skewing even at intersections, the reason for such chaos being that crooked thoroughfares were intended to prevent invading armies from having a view of where they were going. Now the usually quiet streets of Ishibashi reverberate once a year to the vibrant rhythm of the Do Drum Parade, as it snakes its way to the Castle.

Li Po; Drinking Alone I take my wine jug out among the flowers to drink alone, without friends. I raise my cup to entice the moon. That, and my shadow, makes us three. But the moon doesn,t drink, and my shadow silently follows. I will travel with moon and shadow, happy to the end of spring. When I sing, the moon dances. When I dance,my shadow dances, too. We share life's joys when sober. Drunk, each goes a separate way. constant friends, although we wander, We'll meet again in the Milky Way. Mountain Drinking Song To drown the ancient sorrows, We drank a hundred jugs of wine there in the beautiful night. We couldn't go to bed with the moon so bright. The finally the wine overcame us and we lay down on the empty mountain the earth for a pillow, and a blanket made of heaven. She spins silk Far up river in szechuan, waters rise as spring winds roar. How can I dare to meet her now, to brave the dangeruos gorge? The grass grows green in the vally below where silk worms silently spin. Her hands work threads that never end, dawn to dusk when the cuckoo sings. Autumn River Song The moon shimmers in green water.

Li Po is perhaps one of the most well known Taoist poets. He was very close to the Confucian poet Tu-Fu, whom he influenced.

Peach blossoms tinged by dew take on a deeper tone. In the dense woods at times I see deer; By the brook I hear no bells at noon. For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong.
H.L. Mencken For years Hollywood giants ignored the Internet because it didn't accomplish their artistic goal: namely, making money. But they were roused out of slumber this winter, when America Online announced plans to buy Time Warner (which owns this magazine, many cable outlets and possibly a small part of your soul).
from Time Magazine I don't have much of anything to say, really. I have more of an urge to write than anything else at the moment, and I've hardly been up long enough to be able to quantify the day. Which may make this the perfect time to write about what's been going on. It's not that I don't have anything to write about. The list of subjects has been growing and mutating in the back of my mind for the past week. A couple of conversations that are resonant, a pizza to describe, and since some of my friends here are looking forward to meeting my folks, I figured I would write about that. But not right now. Life's been quietly interesting. Chinese curse, Li Po laughing underground interesting on a personal level.

L i Po Chun United World College In the shadow of Ma On Shan and overlooking the waters of Tolo Channel in Hong Kong's eastern New Territories lies Li Po Chun United World College. The college was opened in 1992 thanks to a generous grant from the Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund and support from the Hong Kong government. The project was initiated by Dr Lee Quo-Wei, Chairman of Hang Seng Bank, who continues to serve as Chairman of the college's Board of Directors. Li Po Chun College is one of ten such colleges around the world (with others in Canada, the US., Venezuela, the UK., Italy, Swaziland, Singapore, India and Norway). It offers challenging, two-year pre-university courses to students of outstanding ability - irrespective of their race, creed, colour, nationality or ability to pay. About 40% of Li Po Chun's 250 students are from Hong Kong, with the rest hailing from over 50 countries worldwide. The campus's collegiate atmosphere stresses personal development, with students encouraged to adopt a self-disciplined approach to learning to nurture their own intellectual and social maturity. The multicultural student body is offered the chance to learn much about China through a number of language and culture courses as well as an annual field trip to the mainland. After earning an International Baccalaureate, many of Li Po Chun's graduates go on to distinguished universities around the world. The school enjoys the support of its patron, Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, as well as distinguished world figures Mr. Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa, and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordon through the structure of the United World College.

It does not provide a Chinese text. Besides this, more extensive notes would have been useful. For example, in "Ch'ang-Kan Village Song," the wife says, "I'm not saying I'd go far to meet you, no further than Ch'ang-feng Sands." It would have been nice to know that Ch'ang-Kan was about two hundred miles downstream from Ch'ang-feng Sands. More serious is that note to the poem that states Ezra Pound "translated" this poem. Actually, Ezra Pound could not read Chinese when he wrote his version of the poem, but relied upon the writings of Ernest Fenollosa, who also could not read Chinese and relied upon Japanese scholars. Despite all this, the book does provide an enjoyable glimse of a Tang dynasty Dylan Thomas (at least as far as wine goes). A MUST For Poetry Fans This review is meant for those who may not read a lot of poetry or are still wondering about this book after reading other reviews.
