ALIEN CONTACT

Holly Lisle : Diplomacy of Wolves
Another fantasy book with the dreaded words "First book in an epic sword and sorcery series" plastered all over the press release. Doesn't anyone write stand-alone fantasy stories nowadays? As first books in a series go, Holly Lisle's Diplomacy of Wolves (Book 1 of " The Secret Texts " series, just so you know) is not bad. It's not wonderful, either, but at least Lisle shows some facility with words, understands that she needs to get right down to the action and get the story moving. She can also construct interesting characters that might just live in the reader's memory for long enough to keep them buying subsequent volumes (which is the trick in this part of the market, right?) The heroine of Diplomacy of Wolves is Kait Galweigh, a junior diplomat set the task of keeping her foolish cousin from disgracing the family in the run-up to the cousin's arranged marriage with another important family. Kait discovers a plot in progress against her family, which turns out to be even more devious than she first thinks, but endangers her in particular, since she has her own secrets that she has ben trying to keep from the world. As the story unfolds, Kait finds herself on the run, and looking for an ancient artefact that may be the only way to save her family and herself. All pretty standard fantasy fare, really. If there is anything about Diplomacy of Wolves that gives me reason to look forward to another episode in Kait's story, then it is the vigour of Lisle's writing, which is well-paced and doesn't waste time with inconsequentialities. If there is anything that puts me off, it is the slightly arbitrary nature of the set-up I'm not sure I believe in a world that can manufacture airships (or 'airibles' as Lisle calls them) but whose ships are plain old sailing vessels (surely the same technology that gives an 'airible' its motive force would be put to use immediately on ships?) and who still fight primarily with swords and archery. There is a mismatch between technology levels that Lisle never addresses, and that irritates.

Cartania A life in essays and pictures December 16 2000 at 10:11 AM Holly Lisle (login hollylisle Forum Owner This is an odd, lyrically beautiful, hard-to-pin-down site, and it's in the writing sites section because sometimes writers can learn a lot from seeing something done spectacularly well. The writer who put it together has done something amazing here. You won't find rules for writing on the site, or links to pages that will help you fix your grammar or plot your next novel, but you'll find something that you can keep a lot longer, I suspect. Heart? Passion for excellence? A literate view of a universe that is by turns dark and magical? All of the above, I suggest, and more. Please take the time to visit the site, wander through its links, read its essays, soak up its atmosphere and its energy. Cartania is a gift from John Cartan to the rest of us.

Published: 1996 One of the perennial difficulties for the fantasy novelist who wants to involve earthly characters is how to take them to the scene of the action. (Once there, they pay the author back by requiring explanations of what is around them, making exposition easier and seemingly more natural.) I don't recall the precise device used in Glenraven occurring anywhere else, however, and it is always nice to see something new. When Jayjay's marriage breaks up, she finds a travel guide to the tiny European country of Glenraven in a bookstore. She has never heard of it, but it sounds enchanting; she and a friend go there together. In fact, Glenraven is a magical kingdom, and Jayjay and Sophie have been summoned as the heroes to save it from an evil ruler who is destroying it. That means that the two of them are not going to have quite the holiday they expected... In recent fantasy, the most similar scenario to that of Glenraven is that of Terry Brooks' Magic Kingdom For Sale - Sold Glenraven is not as lightweight as that novel, and doesn't exploit its subject for humourous purposes. (It does make a dig at much of the fantasy genre for minimising the squalor and misery inherent in the medieval setting.) The novels draws on the strengths of both writers, as a collaboration should, Bradley softening the brutality sometimes present in Lisle's work while gaining more of an edge.

Review of SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL by Holly Lisle
BAEN Books, January 1996 When Dayne Kuttner makes a noble wish, God feels obligated to deliver. But Dayne's wish was that no damnation be eternal and that every soul have the opportunity to repenteven if they were demons. God grants Dayne's prayer in his own way, unleashing a horde of demons on North Carolina. Satan is happy enough with having his minions free on earth, even subject to God's fairly stringent restrictions, but he wants one thing most of allDayne Kuttner's soul. To him, that would be the ultimate trophyand he sends his number 2, Agonostis, to make sure that Dayne is damned. Agonostis, fallen angel in charge of lust and fornication, figures that the way to a repressed woman's soul is through, uh, lust and fornication. He creates himself a perfect and perfectly male body and sets off toward seduction and damnation. But Dayne is not dumb, and she certainly isn't going to fall for the obvious tricks. Subtlty and time are called forand Satan doesn't give a fallen angel much time to work. Author Holly Lisle ( see all BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by this author

Holly Lisle, Fire in the Mist (Baen, 1992; reissued 1995) When Faia takes her two dogs and her herd of sheep up into the Highlands for the spring lambing and summer feeding, she doesn't expect to have any troubles. She says a loving farewell to her family, and then with a last bit of worry, her mother lets her go off. Faia's mother expects this to be the last summer before Faia will have to settle down and have children. As events would have it, this is the last summer of herding for Faia, but not for the reasons her mother thought. In the middle of the night a feeling of something terribly wrong overcomes Faia, and she knows that she must return home, even if it costs her all the newborn lambs on the hard trek. The lack of her lover's arrival strengthens this determination even more, and with a great deal of trepidation, Faia sets off on a forced march for the small village of Bright, her home. Just outside the village, Faia is attacked by a pack of wolves. Their hunger is stronger than her magic, and it is all Faia can do to save herself. The loss of her dogs and sheep leaves her devastated, but there is a deep pit of dread growing ever larger in her stomach as she notes that things are not quite right in the village. There is too deep a silence, and familiar things such as smoke from chimneys are missing. There is one survivor of what Faia discerns to be plague. This is a young boy, Aldar, who was also off doing business outside of the village. With nowhere to go and no way to stay in the village, the pair pack up and leave, heading for the 'flatterlands,' and, to Faia, the unknown. Aldar has family in the town of Willowlake, and they turn their steps in that direction. But Fate has much more in store for Faia.

Your Book Is Not Your Baby
by Holly Lisle
I've heard a lot of writers refer to their books as their babies. And many have even extended the analogy further-they say they gestate the thing for nine months, go through terrible pain to get it out into the world ... and then it never calls or writes. And when it's out on its own, it doesn't become a rich doctor as they had hoped it would, but instead bums around the beach and drinks cheap wine out of a paper bag. It's a cute analogy. But it doesn't have much to do with writing a book. I've written books, and I've had babies, and as I, (and a whole bunch of chagrined sixteen-year-old girls) could tell you, once the baby is planted, you don't really have to do a whole lot to make sure it arrives nine months later. It will come whether you're ready or not.
Unlike babies, books will not arrive if you sit around on you butt watching soap operas, reading the funnies or talking on the phone to your girlfriends. Books arrive only if you expend concentrated effort over a long term. Every day you have to hold what you wrote the day before and the week before and the month before in the back of your mind, and simultaneously, you have to keep a part of your focus on what you intend to write the next day, and the next week, and the next month.
If short-story writers are like sprinters, and the writers of novellas are like milers, then novelists are marathoners. The ones who write books over 150,000 words are the Iron Men of the writing world.

Entertaining but little depth or character development. People frequently manifest petty attitudes, foolish behavior and mean-spirited communication. When these people are the elite of a society, college students, and magic professors, however, and when this behavior is so consistent, the story quickly goes beyond the boundary of believability. There's enough easy-minded action to make reading relatively painless but Fire in the Mist falls well below the normally high caliber of PK Dick Award winning books. More opinions and discussion

http://www.rejectwriters.com/lislecourage.htm
Rejected and proud of it Everyday Courage and the Writer
by Holly Lisle Back when I was attending a fair number of conventions and signing a decent number of books, I came up with a saying which I attributed to my Hoos headhunters from the Arhel books, and called a Hoos proverb. It was, "Courage is nothing more than taking one step more than you think you can." Neither the proverb nor the sentiment are particularly original, but I have no idea who said the words first, or how he might have said them. I do know the words are true. Courage has nothing to do with feeling or not feeling fear, with doing great deeds (though sometimes courage accomplishes great deeds), or with conquering life-and-death situations (though in such situations it is certainly helpful. Courage is a form of tenaciousness, a refusal to quit when you want to quit because you're tired or humiliated or broken, and it is as necessary in everyday life as it is in moments of great upheaval. In fact, I could easily say that everyday courage is more important than the 'great deeds' sort, because every one of us will be in everyday situations, while not all of us will be called upon in our lifetimes to perform great deeds. Courage is as essential oxygen, no more and no less. The writer who lacks courage will never succeed.

http://www.rejectwriters.com/lislewritersblock.htm
Rejected and proud of it WRITERS' BLOCK: Are We Having Fun Yet? by Holly Lisle In which we discuss that moment in your life when you're sitting at the kitchen table at three-twenty-seven in the morning with a cup of coffee that once might have tasted like something other than toxic waste but that now would make drinking from Love Canal back in the 60s preferable; when you've bitten the head off every human being who has dared to breathe loudly in your presence for the past week; when the sound of fingers on keys (or even the scritch of a pen on paper) makes you want to weep; when any inspiration you ever had is now dead and mummified and collecting dust in the corner; when you don't remember the last time you strung three words together that were recognizable English; and you haven't written. You haven't written. Those words start to write after a while, don't they? "I haven't written." What they mean is "I'm worthless, I'm talentless, I have nothing to say and even if I did no one would want to listen, I don't know why I think I can do this, and I don't think I want to and I just can't stop . And you don't have to be writing full-time - and counting on making your deadline in order to make the rent-for those three words from Hell to pound through your brain with the awful portent of Poe's narrator's telltale heart.
