1750 items Access: Open Pip Benveniste, a British illustrator, contributed much of the artwork complementing the quality typography of the texts. The Benvenistes strove to achieve the highest quality printing available, and, according to Asa, they always fell short of their goal. One reason was that many of their publications were undertaken in conjunction with other presses, whose printing standards were not as high as those of the Benvenistes. Washington University's Trigram Press Papers cover the formative years of the press, from 1965 to 1969, and include correspondence and manuscripts from such authors as George Andrews, Lawrence Durral, Jack Hirschman, Anselm Hollo, Christopher Logue, Edward Lucie-Smith, David Maltzer, Jeff Nuttall, Tom Raworth, Nathaniel Tarn, Jonathan Williams, and Louis Zukofsky. These papers are of interest because they show the early development of the press and document Asa Benveniste's search for what he calls "the obscurist language possible" in literary works. voices, percussion, keyboards and programming It was through Rob McKahey that I met The Sturdy Beggars Theatre Company , and ended up working on all five of their major productions. For their first, Bertolt Brecht's Baal in 1991, we mainly used arrangements of the author's own songs, but one song in the text we had, 'Old Anne's Song', appeared not to have any music: indeed, it didn't seem to be in Brecht's original German at all. I later discovered from translator Christopher Logue that it was one of Brecht's independent poems, from the Taschenpostille . For the show I wrote an original blues-flavoured setting that ended up being performed naccompanied; the version here is basically my original demo with re-recorded vocals. Old Anne got up and cooked herself a stew.
I wonder why she went to the expense

Homepage Colin Wilso n Contents Special Places Lament for the Folding Stuff Titanic ... Cliff Path Resisting Prince Charming At the beginning of his autobiography Prince Charming , Christopher Logue comments wryly that he has never written three hundred pages of anything. Well, he has now, and his autobiography is lively, amusingly malicious, and endearingly frank. Within the first few pages he is describing how he fell in love with Nell Dunn, and was taken to see her mother, Lady Mary Campbell. Lady Mary, who was lying in bed, looked from Logue to Nell and said: 'Darling, how awful for you'. Christopher Logue was a middle class boy, born in 1926 to a mother who came to dislike him as much as he disliked her. It may have been in reaction to the lack of maternal affection that, at the age of 8, he began to lie and steal. The lying was usually directed to self-aggrandisement, the stealing mainly to money which he did not need - all signs of a deep seated resentment, which has continued to flourish, on and off, throughout most of his life.

The Husbands
Homer for Today
The Husbands: An Account of Books 3 and 4 of Homer's Iliad . By Christopher Logue. Reviewed by Laurance Wieder The Husbands is the latest installment of Christopher Logue's "account" of Homer's Iliad. With its companion volumes, the earlier Kings and War Music, it proves once again that poetry is the fit medium for truth. It's also great fun. Even unfinished, Logue's Homeric enterprise is already one of the enduring poems in our language. The late-twentieth-century epic is built atop all our inherited versions of Homer-not excavated, like some linguistic equivalent of Schliemann's Troy, but built upon: a new-made Iliad in English verse. The new Homer has the freedom and vigor of an extraordinarily gifted and beautiful child of old, moneyed family. Logue deploys Homer's vast historical and linguistic inheritance to create an Iliad that, perhaps for the first time, is not held hostage by a yearning for the lost world of ancient Greek. As this version deftly reminds us, the Trojan War was a war between East and West, between tribes (the Balkan Greeks) and empire (the Trojan Medes), between raw impulse and high civilization. Events in The Husbands turn around the duel between Menelaos and Paris, Helen's "husbands" and the injured parties in the war.
