Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Longfellow (1807-1882) is one of the most famous American poets. He was born and died in Massachusetts. He studied languages in Europe, then returned to the States to work as a professor and librarian at Bowdoin. He was offered a position at Harvard based on his writings, which included essays on French, Spanish, and Italian literature, and translations of poetry and prose. This gave him the opportunity to visit Germany, England, Sweden, and the Netherlands. He spent five years in Germany. Upon his return to the States in 1836, he settled in at Harvard and began to write travel sketches, which were unsuccessful, and poetry, which was. He was in charge of the modern languages program at Harvard for 18 years, until he left in 1854 to write first time. A year later, he published "Hiawatha." Longfellow was unlucky in love. His first wife died in 1831 after just four years of marriage. His second wife died in 1861 when she accidentally set her own dress on fire. He fought against despair by undertaking a translation of Dante's

HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW
THE BEST KNOWN OF OUR AMERICAN POETS
(A Short Biographical)
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on the 27th of February, 1807, in Portland, Maine. Longfellow's stanzas are crowned with a sacred seriousness. He brings to life a "grand, true, harmonic Interpretation".
He proved himself to be possessed of a very bright mind even as a boy, and entered Bowdoin College when only fourteen years of age. He afterwards served this same institution as profesor of modern languages, and in 1835 was called to fill a similar position at Harvard University.
He visited Europe, twice at least, for the purposes of study; and, on his return from his second trip, began that illustrious career of instruction and authorship which has been the source of so much honorable pride on the part of his countrymen. Longfellow selected a historic home in Cambridge; it was the house occupied by George Washington when he took command of the United States Army in 1776. Here he lived till his death; and the stretch of land of the estate has been adorned as a memorial.
The writings of Longfellow have been household possesions, fully as much in England as in America, His work is famous not so much for originality, as for their calm, spiritual, furifying messages.

Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth 1807-82, American poet, b. Portland, Maine, grad. Bowdoin College, 1825. He wrote some of the most popular poems in American literature, in which he created a new body of romantic American legends. Descended from an established New England family, after college he spent the next three years in Europe, preparing himself for a professorship of modern languages at Bowdoin, where he taught from 1829 to 1835. After the death of his young wife in 1835, Longfellow traveled again to Europe, where he met Frances Appleton, who was to become his second wife after a long courtship. She was the model for the heroine of his prose romance, Hyperion (1839). From 1836 to 1854, Longfellow was professor of modern languages at Harvard, and during these years he became one of an intellectual triumvirate that included Oliver Wendell Holmes and James Russell Lowell. Although a sympathetic and ethical person, Longfellow was uninvolved in the compelling religious and social issues of his time; he did, however, display interest in the abolitionist cause. He achieved great fame with long narrative poems such as Evangeline The Song of Hiawatha The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858), and

    Memorable Quotations:
    Massachusetts Writers of the Past
To be seventy years old is like climbing the Alps. You reach a snow-crowned summit, and see behind you the deep valley stretching miles and miles away, and before you other summits higher and whiter, which you may have strength to climb, or may not. Then you sit down and meditate and wonder which it will be. The secret anniversaries of the heart. I feel a kind of reverence for the first books of young authors. There is so much aspiration in them, so much audacious hope and trembling fear, so much of the heart's history, that all errors and shortcomings are for a while lost sight of in the amiable self assertion of youth. In this world a man must either be anvil or hammer. Critics are sentinels in the grand army of letters, stationed at the corners of newspapers and reviews, to challenge every new author. We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done. Morality without religion is only a kind of dead reckoningan endeavor to find our place on a cloudy sea by measuring the distance we have run, but without any observation of the heavenly bodies.

    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Quotes
Talk not of wasted affection; affection never was wasted. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The greatest firmness is the greatest mercy. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:
Believe me, every man has his secret sorrows, which the world knows not; and oftentimes we call a man cold, when he is only sad. No man is so poor as to have nothing worth giving. Sometimes we may learn more from a man's errors, than from his virtues. All the means of action - the shapeless masses - the materials - lie everywhere about us. What we need is the celestial fire to change the flint into the transparent crystal, bright and clear. That fire is genius. Well has it been said that there is no grief like the grief which does not speak. Joy, temperance, and repose,
Slam the door on the doctor's nose. It is curious to note the old sea-margins of human thought. Each subsiding century reveals some new mystery; we build where monsters used to hide themselves. Look not mournfully into the Past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the Present. In is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy Future, without fear, and a manly heart. You know I say just what I think, and nothing more and less. I cannot say one thing and mean another.
