BIOGRAPHIES Augustus Baldwin Longstreet (1790-1870)
One of the authors who is represented in our Introduction to Literature program is Augustus Baldwin Longstreet. Not only was he a contemporary with Washington Irving, Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Longstreet received favorable reviews from Edgar Allan Poe, an accomplishment that was rarely shared by few authors and poets. Poe enjoyed Longstreet's Georgia Scenes, Characters, Incidents, Etc. in the First Half Century of the Republic (1835), a collection of stories revealing the humorous and more earthy side of antebellum Southerners. The book enjoyed eleven editions and made Longstreet well-known throughout the land, even though you would not know this today. If you have never heard of Longstreet, this is not surprising. This remarkable man was a native Georgian, and since he was a Southerner of no mean talent, who supported the cause for Southern independence, he is conveniently ignored by the Northeastern literati, who controls literary tastes and publishers.
Regarding his Georgia Scenes , Longstreet remarks in his introduction to the work: "[The stories] consist of nothing more than fanciful combinations of real incidents and characters; and throwing into those scenes, which would be otherwise dull and insipid, some personal incident or adventure of my own, real or imaginary, as it would best suit my purpose; usually

Augustus Baldwin Longstreet's "Georgia Scenes" Completed
A Scholarly Text
Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, Edited by David Rachels
Augustus Baldwin Longstreet's Georgia Scenes, Characters, Incidents, Etc. in the First Half Century of the Republic has long been considered the first important work of "Humor of the Old Southwest" and more lately has been recognized as a seminal example of literary realism. Despite its popularity and significance, Georgia Scenes has been flawed from the outset. Longstreet did not proofread the first edition, which introduced literally hundreds of misprints. In this collection, David Rachels corrects these errors, adds nine previously uncollected "Georgia Scenes" to Longstreet's original set of nineteen stories, and includes a selection of items published anonymously in Longstreet's newspaper and discussion of lost manuscripts of Georgia Scenes. In the introduction, Rachels surveys Longstreet's place in literature and provides an up-to-date look at the legends and facts of Longstreet's life. David Rachels is an assistant professor of English at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.

The Longstreets It all began when a 17 year old Dutch boy left his native Holland and came, all alone, to "Nieuw Amsterdam" in the new world. The year was 1657. He made friends on the voyage over of course. Once here, they settled on what the Dutch called "Lange Eylandt", in an area named "Fflackland" The Dutch had been here for some 47 years. In 1610, merchants from Amsterdam had sent a small vessel to the Hudson river to trade for furs with the Indians. By 1613 two small forts had been built on the Hudson and a few houses built on Manhattan. It was not until 7 years later (1620) that the English came ashore on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts,
thinking they were in Virginia. For more about the history of those early days, see the article by Dr. Edward Mayes The young Dutchman's name was Dirck. It was the custom in those days to have only one name.
Sometimes the father's name was added to it. And so Dirck, the son of Stoffel, began life in America. His name has come down to us in history as "Dirck Stoffels". When the English took the colony, they required the Dutch to take family names, as was the English custom. Some took the name of their trade (Carpenter), some took a personal description (Short), some took the name of the area from which they came. There is a section in North Brabant, in the Netherlands, between s'Hertogenbosch and Waalwijk, long famous as a great producer of leather goods. The old road through that district was known as "The Long Street" or "Langestraet". Perhaps Dirck was originally from that area.

James Longstreet to Augustus Baldwin Longstreet Camp, Culpeper Courthouse [Va.] July 24, 1863 To A. B. Longstreet, LL. D., Columbus, Ga. My Dear Uncle: Your letters of the 13 th and 14 th were received on yesterday. As to our late battle [near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania], I cannot say much. I have no right to say anything, in fact, but will venture a little for you alone. If it goes to aunt and cousins, it must be under promise that it will go no further. The battle was not made as I would have made it. My idea was to throw ourselves between the enemy and Washington, select a strong position, and force the enemy to attack us. So far as is given to man the ability to judge, we may say with confidence that we should have destroyed the Federal army, marched into Washington, and dictated our terms, or, at least, held Washington and marched over as much of Pennsylvania as we cared to, had we drawn the enemy into attack upon our carefully chosen position in his rear. Most affectionately yours, J. Longstreet Source: "General James Longstreet’s Account of the Campaign and Battle,"

    Early Humorists: 1830 to 1850's
The unique development of American humor took some time. Initially, even in the early decades of the 19th century, our national humor often resembled that of Britain. Washington Irving , for instance, modelled his writing on the works of Jonathan Swift and Oliver Goldsmith. In 1828 Andrew Jackson was elected president and the elevation of the "common man" was reflected in a new type of humor. The characters of the early humorous writings are rough and ready yarn-spinners who speak like everyday folks. The regional representation is dominated by New England and the "old Southwest" (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana.) Included here are six of the early humorists: Augustus Baldwin Longstreet Seba Smith Fanny Fern/Sara Payson Willis Parton William Tappan Thompson ... Johnson J. Hooper For each author you will find a brief biographical description and Web resources. Sites with text versions of the author's works are indicated by the sign of the
Fanny Fern [pen name of Sara Payson Willis Parton] (1811-1872)

In the 1840's, under the name of Fanny Fern, she began contributing sketches to various magazines and newspapers. The two books of her collected pieces were popular in the 1850's. She became one of the first women to write a column in a newspaper. She satirized current events and often wrote about the role of women in society. Her other works include novels and children's books.
