Encyclopedia Lowell, Amy Lowell, Amy, , American poet, biographer, and critic, b. Brookline, Mass., privately educated; sister of Percival Lowell and Abbott Lawrence Lowell. In 1912 she published A Dome of Many-Colored Glass, a volume of conventional verse. The next year she went to England, where she met Ezra Pound and became identified with the imagists . After Pound abandoned the group, she became its leader and champion, publishing a three-volume anthology entitled Some Imagist Poets (1915, 1916, 1917). Lowell's own poetry is particularly notable for its rendering of sensuous images. Her experiments with polyphonic prose, a free-verse form that combines prose and poetry, are considered unsuccessful. Among her volumes of poetry are Sword Blades and Poppy Seed Men, Women, and Ghosts Can Grande's Castle What's o'Clock (1925; Pulitzer Prize), East Wind (1926), and Ballads for Sale Six French Poets (1915) and Tendencies in Modern American Poetry (1917). Her most ambitious work is her two-volume biography of Keats (1925). See biographies by H. Gregory (1958) and S. F. Damon (1935, repr. 1966).

Lowell, Amy Amy Lowell, 1916 Corbis-Bettmann (1874-1925), poet and critic Born on February 9, 1874, in Brookline, Massachusetts, Amy Lowell came from a prominent Massachusetts family (her brothers were Abbott Lawrence Lowell, later president of Harvard, and astronomer Percival Lowell). She was educated in private schools and by her mother, and until she was 28 she did little but alternately live at home, where she enjoyed the life of a Boston socialite, and travel abroad. About 1902 she decided to devote her energies to poetry. It was eight years before her first piece, a conventional but not undistinguished sonnet, was published in Atlantic Monthly, and two more before her first volume, A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass (1912), appeared. On a visit to England in 1913 she met Ezra Pound and discovered his circle, the Imagists. He included one of Lowell's poems in his anthology Des Imagistes (1914), and in that year she published her second book, Sword Blades and Poppy Seed, which includes her first experimentation with free verse and "polyphonic prose."

Courtesy Harvard University Archives "She was not only poetical but the cause of poetry in others," wrote Henry Seidel Canby, editor of The Saturday Review, after a cerebral hemorrhage killed Amy Lowell in 1925. "She, as well as her poetry, will take a place in American literature...a tribute few can expect." A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass, in 1912. Some critics respected the melodious quality of Lowell's verse, but most felt she relied too heavily on nineteenth-century tradition. Few criticisms could have been worse. That year marked a flashpoint for poetic innovation: Ezra Pound was formalizing Imagism; Harriet Monroe had founded the experimental journal Poetry; and vers libre, which deemphasized meter and rhyme in favor of cadence and rhythm, was gaining favor. Des Imagistes, a landmark anthology. Sword Blades and Poppy Seed, Lowell's second volume of poetry, earned raves, but struck Pound as treating Imagist tenets too loosely. When Lowell began planning her own anthology, Pound was outraged; he believed her contributors' poetry lacked Imagism's hallmark intensity. He refused to contribute, and mockingly branded Lowell and her group "Amygists." Poetry magazine with citizens of South Carolina.
