http://www.rootsweb.com/~maessex/newbury/lowellp.htm
Percival Lowell In 1639 Percival Lowell sailed from Bristol, England, for Newbury, MA on the "Jonathan." Percival, considered an old man at the age of sixty-eight, brought his entire family to Newbury. They reached Boston 23 June 1639 after a voyage of nine weeks. There was his wife Rebecca, surname unknown, their three grown children: John, Richard, and Joanna; spouses of their children; several grandchildren; and a few business associates.
Among those who chose to accompany the Lowells to Newbury were Richard Dole, apprentice to John Lowell; William Gerrish, business associate and later to become his son-in-law; and Anthony Somerby, his clerk. Later Anthony Somerby became Newbury's first schoolmaster, serving for nearly fifty years.
Upon arrival, Percival contributed fifty pounds to the common stock and received one hundred acres of marsh and meadow land. He later added to this by purchasing more land. The Newbury Public Library stands on land once owned by the Lowells.
As Percival Lowell had been a merchant in England, he and his sons soon established the same type business in Newbury. However, because of his age, Percival took little active part in business or community affairs. He left most of that to his sons and son-in-law. He did, however, continue to oversee to his business needs, attend church regularly, read books, write poetry, and enjoy his family.
John Lowell, Percival's older son, his wife Mary Gooch, and their four children were aboard the "Jonathan." Mary died when her fifth child was born soon after her arrival in Newbury. The following year John married Elizabeth Goodale. She and John had three children. John took a most active part in the family business and began almost immediately to take a prominent part in public affairs. But he died 10 July 1647, thus leaving much promise unfulfilled.

Percival Lowell, Astronomer
Undoubtedly the greatest believer and promoter of Martian canals was Percival Lowell, astronomer and brilliant mathematician. He belonged to a late nineteenth century Boston family of considerable social status. The Lowell family was extremely wealthy, so much so that Lowell totally financed the observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona, which now bears his name. That kind of wealth in nineteenth century Boston set you apart completely from most other humans. A contemporary jingle runs: So this is dear old Boston, The home of the bean and the cod, Where Lowells talk only to Cabots And Cabots talk only to God! There can be no doubt that Lowell was an accomplished mathematician. His calculations concerning gravitational perturbations to the movement of the planet Neptune, paved the way towards the discovery of the planet Pluto, some 14 years after Lowell's death.
When it came to Mars, however, things were quite different. Undoubtedly Lowell was influenced by Schiaparelli. Yet he believed increasingly that the geometrical patterns he maintained he could see on Mars were the work of intelligent beings, irrigating on a truly vast scale, a vegetation whose seasonal reawakening spread from the poles to the equator. He published a number of very popular books on the subject which enjoyed great influence and success. Lowell's maps of Mars became more geometrical. Even at the height of the popularity of the Martian canals theory around the turn of the century there were a few experienced and keen sighted observers who would have none of it. Eugene Antoniardi was one such astronomer, blessed with acute vision and with access to the finest telescopes in Europe, situated at altitudes where atmospheric 'seeing' conditions were at their best. At close oppositions when through the most powerful instruments, Mars can look no better that a 'shaky' golf ball held at arms length. Antoniardi maintained that Lowell had been on the verge of seeing true fine detail but he ended up 'joining the dots'

Anamizu and Percival Lowell
By Masaki Okamoto
February, 1996 In my prefecture there is a city which has a festival named after Percival Lowell, who is very famous for his mathematical contribution to Clyde Tombaugh's discovery of Pluto in 1930. The city is Anamizu, located in the center of Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture, and the name of the festival is the "Lowell Festival" which is held at the beginning of May each year. Why did Anamizu City make such a festival? The American astronomer visited there in May, 1889 and published a book about the journey to the "then" remote fishing village and port. About 100 years later the city government decided to commemorate his arrival. In 1981 Masaaki Miyazaki, a college lecturer in Kanazawa, published the Japanese version of Percival Lowell's Noto : An Unexplored Corner of Japan . The book, describing a foreign tourist's travel in "Lost" Japan, became very popular in the prefecture and was awarded the Kanazawa Civic Literature Prize by the Kanazawa city government, which led to the Anamizu city's decision. Anamizu is also designated by the Environmental Ministry as "the city which has the most beautiful night skies in Japan", and calls itself "Star City." The people living in the area can still enjoy being with beautiful Nature around them. They want to keep it as it is.

The Culture and Science of a Boston Brahmin
David Strauss
"This well-tempered biography of the noted astronomer places Percival Lowell's scientific and cultural pursuits in the context of his rebellion against the parochialism and increasing irrelevancy of the Boston Brahmin worldview...Strung like a harp, aloof, and confident to the point of arrogance...Lowell harvested little but ridicule from his crude hierarchy of races, his assertion that there was life on Mars, and his quest for Planet X...It would be easy to simply deride this blustering figure, but Strauss takes a harder, more fulfilling approach, appreciating Lowell's ability to stir major scientific and cultural controversy while clarifying just why he was so often wrong."
Kirkus Reviews In the history of planetary astronomy, Lowell will be always remembered for the cranky conviction that Mars had canals and, hence, intelligent life. Rather than view Lowell through the prism of his projects, Strauss portrays him as a sort of freelance repudiator, though still a psychological captive, of late-nineteenth-century Boston's wealthy circles...The biography opens a portal into Lowell's mind.

It may be the planet Venus you see in the night sky, when autumn darkness falls early and clear, but then again....
By Susan Williams What is a UFO? "For me, it means exactly what it says unidentified flying object," said Martin Burkhead, emeritus professor of astronomy at IU Bloomington, who specializes not only in the physical aspects of the universe, but its mythology as well. "I get many calls especially this time of year and in the spring," he said. "It's as if with darkness coming earlier in the fall or the sky suddenly becoming clear in the spring after months of clouds, people are drawn to look at the sky, and they are unable to explain what they see." Burkhead said that many sightings are obvious. Venus, he explained, is visible even in a clear, day-time sky. And if you know where to look, the space station Mir can be seen moving brightly and quickly across the starry night-time dome. "When I'm called," Burkhead said, "I take the sightings seriously and try to figure out what is being seen. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not. In most cases, in my own mind but maybe not the caller's I have been reasonably certain of my identification. Occasionally, I can't figure out what is being seen. "I spend as much time as anyone outside in the night, and I occasionally spot something and say, 'What in the world was that?' No problem it's a UFO."

of necessity upside down is startlingly brought back to the man when
he first sets foot at Yokohama. If his initial glance does not,
to be sure, disclose the natives in the every-day feat of standing
calmly on their heads, an attitude which his youthful imagination
conceived to be a necessary consequence of their geographical position,
it does at least reveal them looking at the world as if from the standpoint of that eccentric posture. For they seem to him to see everything topsy-turvy. Whether it be that their antipodal situation has affected their brains, or whether it is the mind of the observer himself that has hitherto been wrong in undertaking to rectify the inverted pictures presented by his retina, the result, at all events
