Mina Loy and Some Literary Theory
The following passage is from “The Effectual Marriage or The Insipid Narrative of GINA AND MIOVANNI.” Gina and Miovanni are in fact, of course, Mina (Loy) and Giovanni Papini , Loy’s Italian Futurist lover. The title (feels like in- effectual and “insipid” obviously replaces “inspired”) alerts us to the satirical nature of the poem—it is an attack on the sentimental aspects of coupledom, manifested by the division within the house of the library (Miovanni’s thinking room) and the Kitchen, where Gina creates with “his” pots and pans. The door was an absurd thing Yet it was passable They quotidienly passed through it It was this shape Gina and Miovanni who they were God knows They knew it was important to them This being of who they were They were themselves Corporeally transcendentally consecutively Conjunctively and they were quite complete Loy explicitly sets out one of the fundamental problems of modern thought with the distinction between the corporeal (the body) and the transcendental (which determines actions and experiences obscurely). The distinction is reminiscent of the one between the body and the mind, as well as a whole list of others:

Biography garners awards and a musical score
By Barbara McKenna Carolyn Burke's biography of Mina Loy has been well-received by critics The most common thing Carolyn Burke used to hear about her book on Mina Loy was, "Don't you mean Myrna?" Happily, Burke, a research associate in humanities, heard a different tune once the book was released in 1996. Burke's book, Becoming Modern: The Life of Mina Loy (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1996; University of California, 1997) has received glowing praise in media and academic circles. And this past spring the book won a prestigious academic award and was also adapted as a musical. Although an obscure figure now, Mina Loy was a force in the literary world of Paris in the 20s and 30s, on the literary front lines with such artists as Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and Ezra Pound. Born in London in 1882, Loy was an accomplished poet and painter who, in her open expression of her sexuality and independence, became one of the early voices of feminism as well as an influential experimental poet. Burke's book has been recognized by reviewers across the board as definitive and engaging. Praises have been printed in publications from the

Small Press Traffic's Talk Series continues with this presentation by Carolyn Burke, who will discuss her new biography of the
enigmatic modernist poet Mina Loy, and discuss as well the travails of her twenty-year research project, over four continents, on the trail of Loy. London-born Mina Loy (1882-1966) was the intimate of William Carlos Williams, Marcel Duchamp, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Joseph Cornell, Marinetti, Djuna Barnes and Man Ray; yet despite her genius, beauty and pizzazz she hasuntil quite recentlybeen almost forgotten, except for a few dedicated "Loy"-alists. Her biographer, Carolyn Burke, holds a Ph.D. in literature from Columbia and is well known for her translations and critical work on post-modern French feminisms, particularly Irigaray, Cixous, Kristeva. A native of Australia, she now splits her time between Santa Cruz and Sydney.

MINA LOY: REIMAGINING THE POETIC LINE It comes as a surprise to learn that Mina Loy thought of herself as a painter who accidentally wandered into poetry. Although, briefly, she became famous (or infamous) for her poetry's frank dissection of female psycho-sexual experience, she had already shown paintings in numerous European exhibitions when her first piece of writing (a long poem in the form of a manifesto called "Aphorisms on Futurism") appeared in Camera Work in 1914. Her poetry is just as striking today, in part because of the strong visual sense that animates her daring rejection of formal and thematic convention. Until 1913 (when she encountered the provocative aesthetic activism of Marinetti and the Italian Futurists), Mina Loy could have been described as a minor Post-Impressionist painter, known chiefly for the elegance of her draughtsmanship and the delicacy of her water-colors. It is worth noting that the other important influence in these crucial years was her reading of Gertrude Stein's experimental prose. Recalling its impact years later, Mina Loy wrote that her friend had "dismantled the brute matter of style," as if Stein had taken apart her artistic materials the better to reassemble them.
