    Bibliography: Psychedelic Drugs and Bohemians
By Colin Pringle - May 17, 1990 - October 22, 1999 Subject matter covered by this bibliography: This bibliography covers three main subjects, altered states of consciousness, psychedelic drugs, and users of psychedelic drugs. Each subject will be discussed separately and the search strategy used to find the material will be discussed. No attempt was made to sort the bibliography into these subject headings simply because there is so much overlap between them, it would make doing so next to impossible. Also, I have not had the opportunity to read each and every book in this bibliography since it contains almost 200 books, and some of these books are very obscure. Who this bibliography is aimed at: This bibliography should be useful for a wide variety of subjects, including but not limited to consciousness research, drug abuse, history of bohemian movements in the US., religion and philosophy (especially Eastern) and psychology. The bibliography should be especially useful for psychotherapists since many of the books directly deal with this subject. How factual the information is in these books Every attempt was made to keep this bibliography as scholarly as possible. However, it does contain some books that are biased or that contain information known not to be correct. For example, like the movie

BRIEF LITERARY HISTORY NOTABLE BOOKS SOME SIGNIFICANT WRITERS A BRIEF HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA LITERATURE The literary history of California begins with the oral traditions of the Native Californians and continues with the writing and printing of occasional pieces - such as religious works, Christmas pastoreles and anonymous poems - during the Spanish and Mexican periods. Perhaps as significant as these locally produced works were those of French, English and American visitors. Most important of these is Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast" (1840), the story of a sea voyage which ends in San Francisco and which attracted considerable attention to the region. The City Hotel in old San Francisco included the Pioneer Bookstore ( right of the wholesale/retail store ) However, not until the Gold Rush brought a large foreign population - mainly from the United States, did the written word flourish locally. The first journal to aim at something more than just printed reports was the "Golden Era," which attracted contributions from the then new state's first literary figures. Later, other journals such as "The Pioneer," "Hutchings' California Magazine" and the "Overland Monthly" sprang up. Together they would help launch the careers of

"My head expanded wider and wider, revolving with inconceivable rapidity, and enlarging in space with every revolution. It filled the room - the house - the city; it became a world, peopled with the shapes of men and monsters. I spun away into its great vortex, and wandered about its expanses as about a universe. I lost all perception of time and space, and knew no distinction between the realities around me, and the phantasmata which sprung in endless succession from my brain."

During one of our phone conversations with class associate (and cochair of the Class Associate Committee) Liz Osborne, she tossed this one out for your consideration. As our 50th approaches, and in keeping with her untiring efforts to maintain contact with widows of our classmates, including inviting them to our mini-reunions, Liz has suggested that each of us give some thought to inviting a class widow to participate in our 50th.
