Biggs Museum of American Art
Dover, Delaware
http://www.biggsmuseum.org The following essay was first published in connection with the Museum's exhibition "Painting Ever Since She Can Remember: Works by Betty Harrington Macdonald," held from October 21 to November 29, 1998. Essay reprinted with permission of the Biggs Museum of American Art. Betty Harrington Macdonald by Dr. Jann Haynes Gilmore "I have painted ever since I can remember." Eighty-six years ago, Elizabeth Watson Harrington was born in Dover, Delaware, on July 19, 1912, to Chancellor (1874-1959) and Mrs. William Watson Harrington (1875-1966), as the middle child between two sisters, Sarah and Anna Banks, who was called Nancy. Tracing her ancestors back to the American Revolution, she was steeped in American and Delaware history by both her parents who were "great historians." Her father was the Presiding Judge of the Court of Chancery, Delaware's Court of Equity which is based upon an old English model. Her mother, Sarah Godwin from Milford, also had an abiding love for history and her family owned farming interests east of Frederica, acquired from the Indians, from which grain, primarily wheat and corn, was shipped on the Murderkill River up to Philadelphia, and from there, to all ports of call. Betty Harrington also acquired a love for history from her paternal aunt, Jessie Harrington, who became an expert on colonial history, especially decorative arts, and wrote a definitive book on early Delaware silver.

48. Nancy Mooney (Betty MacDonald) -- Supposedly Mysterious JFK Assassination-Relate
Nancy Mooney, also known as betty macdonald, provided Darrell Garner an alibi forthe shooting of Warren Reynolds. Was her death mysterious?
http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/nancy_mooney.htm
Dead in the Wake of the Kennedy Assassination
Nancy Mooney: Mysterious Death?
by Magen Knuth Bob Considine's article published in the New York Journal-American on February 23, 1964 was the first to speculate on Mooney's death. It was so pivotal in this argument that the Warren Commission entered it as exhibit 342. N ancy Mooney, also know as Betty MacDonald, was found hanged in her jail cell by a trusty at 4:45 a.m. on February 13, 1964, only two hours after being incarcerated. Justice of the Peace W. E. Richburg ruled Mooney's death a suicide ( Dallas Morning News. February 14, 1964, section 1, page 8). To the Dallas Police Department, it simply looked like a suicide of one of their inmates. To JFK conspiracy theorists, it looked like another murder of someone who knew "too much." This claim first surfaced in an article by columnist Bob Considine. The Warren Commission concluded that there was nothing suspicious about the death (663), but conspiracy author Sylvia Meagher, in Accessories After the Fact The Warren Commission, The Authorities, and The Report , claimed that the "investigation cited by the Warren Commission as the basis for its findings in the Betty MacDonald affair is so sketchy and deficient that it leaves matters where they were when Bob Considine's story was published and adds a few new mysteries as well (297)."

SM: STANTON MACDONALD-WRIGHT BH: Mr. Wright was, from 1935 to 1940, Regional Director of the Federal Arts Project in Southern California, and also Regional Advisor for seven western states. Besides his work for the Federal Arts Project, Mr. Wright is much better known as the "Dean of Calif. Painters," as Time Magazine has called him. He was born July 8th of 1890, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and came to Santa Monica quite early when you were a little boy, is that correct? SM: Ten years old, yes. BH: And you went through public schools here? SM: I went to public school for about three months, when I first came out here: I went to a Catholic school; it was the only school here that was fit to go to at that time. Remember, this was practically a Mexican town at that time. BH: Did you go to Santa Monica High School? SM: Yes. It was out at 10th Street and (I believe) Santa Monica Blvd. I believe, I don't know. I mentioned it on this "Stairway to the Stars" [A television program] the other day, and they said that that's where it was. I had forgotten about it. And I went to the Academy of the Holy Names here for a time; very nice sisters. I'm not a Catholic myself. BH: Did you have an art education from them at all, or . . . ?

ABOUT US SUBSCRIBE E-MAIL EDITOR HOME Issue 5
Betty MacDonald is best known for her book The Egg and I (a bestseller when it was published in 1945, it was made into a movie starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurry) and her children's books, the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series. The Egg and I is the story of a city girl who, at the age of 18, marries a chicken farmer from "that delightful old school of husbands who lift up the mattresses to see if the little woman has dusted the springs" and settles down with him to raise children and poultry and conceives an almost pathological hatred of chickens. Published in 1945, The Egg and I is a classic of the wisecracking, disgruntled dame variety but it isn't hard to see that beneath that veneer, the book voiced real complaints about women's lot in marriage and a tough streak of anti-romantic realism. (It also contributed to the image of Seattle and its environs as a realm of backwoods eccentrics a far cry from the current stereotype of grunge rockers and latte-drinking drones for Microsoft.) The Plague and I (1948), MacDonald's subsequent and largely ignored autobiographical follow-up, concerns the year she spent in a tuberculosis sanitarium. In it, she brings the same grim humor to the story of her institutionalization and the dehumanizing treatment she experiences there.

Betty MacDonald
Northwest Writer Betty MacDonald developed a huge following in the 1940s and 50s with her comic tales of everyday life in the Pacific Northwest. "The Egg and I", her first $1 million seller, was a bleakly humorous account of chicken farming near Chimacum on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. She moved there in the late 1920s with her first husband, Robert Heskett. The marriage lasted four years. In 1942 Betty married Don MacDonald, started writing and quickly became a celebrity. A film version of "The Egg and I" starred Fred McMurray and Claudette Colbert and spawned a series of Ma and Pa Kettle movies. "Onions in the Stew" described her years on Vashon Island, WA and "The Plague and I" was an upbeat account of her battle with tuberculosis at age 30. Her children's novels include "Nancy and Plum" and the "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle" series.

Betty MacDonald is perhaps best known as the author of The Egg And I . First published in 1945, the book hilariously describes Betty's life as a young wife on a chicken ranch on the Olympic peninsula. The Egg And I sold more than a million copies its first year in print and was made into a film starring Claudette Colbert as Betty. Its success catapulted Betty MacDonald into worldwide fame. What many fans of the book don't know is that Betty, who lived most of her life in King County, published three other autobiographical books, Anybody Can Do Anything The Plague And I , and Onions In The Stew The Plague And I manages to find Betty's own humor even in the grave face of her confinement to Firland Sanatorium with tuberculosis in the days before antibiotics. Onions In The Stew recounts the years Betty and her second husband, Donald C. MacDonald, spent living on Vashon Island. Both these books paint a fascinating picture of life in the Pacific Northwest in the 1930s and '40s, but it is in
