Heather and Snow
by George MacDonald.
CHAPTER I A RUNAWAY RACE Upon neighbouring stones, earth-fast, like two islands of an archipelago, in an ocean of heather, sat a boy and a girl, the girl knitting, or, as she would have called it, weaving a stocking, and the boy, his eyes fixed on her face, talking with an animation that amounted almost to excitement. He had great fluency, and could have talked just as fast in good English as in the dialect in which he was now pouring out his ambitions-the broad Saxon of Aberdeen. He was giving the girl to understand that he meant to be a soldier like his father, and quite as good a one as he. But so little did he know of himself or the world, that, with small genuine impulse to action, and moved chiefly by the anticipated results of it, he saw success already his, and a grateful country at his feet. His inspiration was so purely ambition, that, even if, his mood unchanged, he were to achieve much for his country, she could hardly owe him gratitude. 'I'll no hae the warl' lichtly (make light of) me!' he said.

Certainly work is not always required of a man. There is such a thing as a sacred idleness - the cultivation of which is now fearfully neglected. George MacDonald
MacDonald was born in Huntly on 10th December 1824, but moved soon after with his family to a nearby farm. He went to university in Aberdeen in 1840 and to Highbury College in 1848 to train as a Congregational minister. He was forced to resign from his first charge at Arundel in 1853 and lived thereafter as a man of letters and on the charity of his friends and disciples. His first important original publication was a long religious poem, Within and without (1855) but a more important landmark was Phantastes (1858), his first major contribution to the genre of fantasy and a complex attempt to communicate that sense of otherness which is his abiding concern in his writing. Influenced by both English and German Romantic writers, and by religious poets of the Renaissance, Phantastes with its poetry and its visionariness was in turn an important influence on CS Lewis and his circle. Here, its hero starts a new day after a night at the foot of a protective beech: I must act and wander. With the sun well risen, I rose, and put my arms as far as they would reach around the beech-tree, and kissed it, and said good-bye. A trembling went through the leaves; a few of the last drops of the night's rain fell from off them at my feet; and as I walked slowly away, I seemed to hear in a whisper once more the words: "I may love him, I may love him; for he is a man, and I am only a beech-tree." MacDonald produced fantasy writing for both children and adults throughout his long career. A large family and no steady income, however, forced him to more saleable works and in 1863 he published

Valkyrie Publications takes its name from a passage in a book about Norse mythology describing the Valkyries as “the thought and will of the Allfather, made visible on the battlefield in the form of armed women.” How wonderful it would be to express the will of our Father so perfectly! And so it was named for the aspiration to become a true expression, some day, of the will of God. Valkyrie Publications has music inspired by the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, Andrew Lang, and – in a collection of Christian songs – Julian of Norwich, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. John of the Cross. In the beauty of the trees, waters, woods, and meadows, we find an intimation of the world beyond, and in human love we find an echo of the wondrous love of God. We hope that people of all faiths will find something in our music to play on their harps – and to inspire them with the strength, joy, and dedication of the Valkyries. We have four books of original songs for the harp, one instruction book, and over 40 pieces of sheet music, including eight-piece sets of arrangements of Christmas carols, old hymns, and Irish traditional songs that include both the original Gaelic words and English translations. Our sheet music includes a new setting of “Hail Holy Queen,” settings of Psalms, love songs, songs inspired by the woods and water and by Celtic myth and legend, and a new setting of the

Brief Biography Works by Kingsley Secondary Works by Author ... Secondary Works by Date George MacDonald Vol. 24, No. 3 (Fall 1999): 119-129.

Makman discusses Kingsley's treatment of the child in The Water-Babies, as well as that of Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in her examination of MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind . While the latter work, she declares, presents the child as the new toy-child, depicting, after the cessation of child-labor, the gradual development of the notion that children are essentially toys, Kingsley's novel has a different orientation. "But while Kingsley emphasizes the mysterious nature of the play-world and its inhabitants, MacDonald focuses more on the mysterious nature of the child who can enter that world" (122). The Water-Babies MacDonald, George Children Carroll, Lewis
The Gold Thread: Essays on George MacDonald (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 1990): 140-162.

In this article Manlove compares and contrasts the characters, the views, and the writings of Kingsley and George MacDonald, who, he declares were arguably the only two significant writers of Christian fantasy in the Victorian period. Generally, Kingsley, whose belief and involvement in science were much greater than MacDonald's, places nature first while MacDonald chooses "supernature." Kingsley's God is so identifiable with the works of His creation that He is only distinguishable from them by faith. The God of MacDonald, who has a stronger sense of the supernatural and the mystical, is invariably a person, whereas for Kingsley He is a force. Nevertheless, Manlove argues that the two writers for all their differences share a particular common bond, namely "that they chose, alone and at almost the same time in the nineteenth century, to put what they could of the divine presence in the fairy tale" (159).
