Sir John Alexander Macdonald The Man Who Helped Make Canada The Country It Is Today by Pamela Atwell
Sir John A. Macdonald was one of Canada’s founding fathers. He is most remembered as being Canada’s first Prime Minister, running the government from July 1, 1867 until November 5, 1873. Macdonald would become Prime Minister once again on October 17, 1878 and would stay in this position until June 6,1891. While he was leader of the country he faced his own share of political obstacles, including Confederation, the Metis rebellion and threats of an American he is among the greatest leaders Canada has ever seen and played a significant part in the forming of Canada as a country. John Alexander Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1815. His family immigrated to Canada (Kingston, Ontario) in 1820; Macdonald was five years old at the time. In 1829 Macdonald ended his schooling; his parents could not afford to send him to university. Macdonald would later say that if he had went to university he would have ended up in literature, not politics. (Waite, John

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback John D(ann) MacDonald (1916-1986) American mystery writer, one of the great names of the genre, who establish his name in the pulps. MacDonald created his famous series character Travis McGee in his forty-fourth novel THE DEEP BLUE GOOD-BY in 1964, and went on to write twenty-one books about the most "colorful" of all unlicensed private detectives - each novel in the McGee series contains a color in the title. The awarded mystery writer and critic H.R.F. Keating selected MacDonald's THE GREEN RIPPER (1979) in 1987 for his list of the one hundred best crime novels. "The twenty-odd McGee books... are, in fact, perhaps our best example of the crime story as a novel of feelings. In this it is not unfair to compare MacDonald to Charles Dickens, although Dickens had of course an infinitely wider range. But it is Dickens the novelist of feelings, of sentiment, and of sentimentality, that MacDonald brings to mind." (Keating in John D. MacDonald was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. degree from Syracuse University in 1938, and earned a Harvad M.B.A. in 1939. In 1937 he married Dorothy Mary Prentiss; they had one son. During World War II he served in the Office of Strategic Services (1940-46), the forerunner of the CIA, and in the Burma-China-India theatre. He began during this time write fiction, and sold later all kinds of stories - sports, science, adventure, fantasy - to a number of magazines. His first story was published in

Biography
"When fortune empties her chamberpot on your head, smile and say ‘we are going to have a summer shower.’ " Sir John A. Macdonald, ca. 1875
Fortune emptied her chamberpot on Sir John A. Macdonald's head more than once, and his comment is indicative of the humour with which he met life's set-backs. Canada's first prime minister probably had more obstacles to encounter than any other. Finally, external events hastened the acceptance of Confederation. The American Civil War, the Fenian Raids of 1866 and a generally aggressive American foreign policy caused concern about the defence of the British North American colonies. Macdonald played a leading role in promoting Confederation, to the point of making an alliance with his staunch political rival and Opposition leader, George Brown. With his wide-ranging personal vision and constitutional expertise, Macdonald drafted the British North America Act , which defined the federal system by which the four provinces were united on July 1, 1867. Macdonald was appointed Prime Minister of Canada and won the federal election the following month. In his first administration, his primary purpose was to build a nation. Communications between the provinces were essential and to this end, Macdonald began the Transcontinental Railway. It would run from Halifax to the Pacific coast and include Canada's two new provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. Under Macdonald's leadership, Canada achieved a certain degree of autonomy from Britain in foreign affairs. He also brought in a system of tariffs to protect Canadian products from foreign imports, especially those from the United States, in order to boost economic growth.

John Sandfield Macdonald
John Sandfield Macdonald, Ottawa, Ontario
(December 12, 1812 - June 1, 1872)
Called to the Bar of Upper Canada in 1840, John Sandfield Macdonald settled in Cornwall to practice law. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada and remained there until 1867. From the outset of his political career, he associated with reformers and their program. From 1849 to 1851, he held the office of solicitor general in Robert Baldwin 's cabinet and in 1852, was appointed Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Highly critical of Lord Elgin's politics, Sandfield Macdonald moved closer to George Brown as a spokesman for reformers in Upper Canada. But their co-operation was short-lived; George Brown advocated rep by pop and a highly centralized legislative union, while Sandfield Macdonald favoured a double majority, which would better safeguard the distinctive characteristics of United Canada's two regions. He envisioned a more flexible, less centralized federal authority. Sandfield Macdonald was called on to form a government from 1862 to 1864. When his attempt to apply the principle of the double majority failed, he proposed a coalition of the various ideologies within a single government to counter Canada's political instability. This Great Coalition would be the work of George Brown

30. SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD STATUE
Information on the statue of Canada's first Prime Minister erected in Hamilton after his death.
http://collections.ic.gc.ca/wentworth/mac.htm
Cultural Landmarks of Hamilton-Wentworth Sir John A. Macdonald Statue Location: Gore Park, King Street East, Hamilton, Ontario Following the death of Sir John A. Macdonald on June 6, 1891, the Hamilton Board of Trade proposed to erect a permanent memorial to commemorate the former Prime Minister. The Board believed the statue would be a credit to the City of Hamilton, and would also attract thousands of tourists. The city agreed and proceeded to establish the Macdonald Committee. This newly formed committee was responsible for generating money to fund the project. Senator Sanford believed the committee would have no difficulties raising four to five thousand dollars for the cause. Tenders were given and sculptors submitted models of Sir John A. Macdonald. George E. Wade of London, England was the sculptor chosen for the project. His model portrayed Macdonald in a buttoned up Prince Albert coat with his right hand extended. The final statue was cast in bronze and was eight feet and three inches in height. After the completion of the project, the statue was shipped from London, England to Hamilton and arrived on October 30, 1893. The statue was immediately place upon a pedestal of gray New Brunswick granite that stood eleven feet high and was located in the intersection of King and Hughson streets, facing west. Once the statue was mounted, the overall height was nineteen feet and three inches. The statue was then covered by bunting in preparation for the official dedication which was scheduled for November 1, 1893.
