Back to Main Page Bernard MacLaverty: CAL Bernard MacLaverty Biography Bernard Mac Laverty was born in 1942 in Belfast. On leaving school (A-levels in English and Chemistry) he worked as a laboratory technician in the anatomy department at Queen's University, Belfast. Queens University Belfast When he was 28 he left that job to become student of English Literature at Queen's University where he graduated and also gained a teaching qualification. He moved to Scotland where he taught at various schools in Edinburgh and Glasgow until 1981 when he gave up teaching in order to write full time. MacLaverty began to write at the age of 19, as something to do "after the dot disappeared on the TV set." His breakthrough came in 1977 with a collection of short stories: "Secrets and Other Stories". Love and family matters, particularly the father-son-relationship , are a central topic in MacLaverty's writing. His own father died when he was only 12. He lived for some time on the Isle of Islay, but has now returned to Glasgow. He is married with four children.

Boys of Belfast
Author Bernard MacLaverty dissects the adolescent male mind
By NORA SETON
THE ANATOMY SCHOOL.
By Bernard MacLaverty.
Norton, $25.95. JUST when you thought it was safe to stop reliving adolescence, Bernard MacLaverty has published a new novel, The Anatomy School . It is the story of Martin Brennan, a boy at the cusp of manhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the late 1960s. Martin lives at home in dire poverty with his widowed mother. He flunked his high school exams and is currently repeating his last semester. He must pass his exams this time because there's simply no more money in the household. After a few pages of Martin, we see the suspense element of the novel. He must pass those exams, yet he seems incapable of passing. He is in the throes of experiencing life as a young man, and the lessons of books spill off him like water off paraffin. This is Northern Ireland, and Martin attends a boys' school run by the clergy. The experience is spare and rigorous. He spends his days in the company of two mates, the three of them like atoms held in a curiously affectionless bond. The very athletic and successful Kavanagh is one, and why he takes up with Martin, who is scrawny, parochial and ineffectual, isn't entirely convincing. Blaise is a new boy in the school, and his subversive behavior corrals Martin and Kavanagh into new adventures. Blaise is the one who smuggles pornographic photographs into school. Blaise is the one who masterminds a grand plan to cheat on exams.

Depression produces great books. Whether from a deep, stair-less hell or from Churchill's 'black dog' that occasionally comes to visit, they emerge from the dark leaving a note, "Gone for Help". 'Prozac-lit' rarely comes as uplifting as Bernard MacLaverty's Grace Notes shortlisted for last year's Booker. This is the Irish writer's first full length novel since Cal and in it he brings to life the struggle of Catherine McKenna as she tries to keep afloat amidst post natal depression. She is a composer, a woman in a male dominated field, and throughout the book picks up her pencil and manuscript only to drop it again and again as she slowly emerges from a disastrous relationship with a feckless charmer and rebuilds a peace with her constricting family. The book opens with her attending the funeral of her father in her home town in Northern Ireland then returning to Glasgow in panic filled dread to the baby daughter that is both a trigger for her depression and her eventual saviour. In the second part of the book MacLaverty takes us through the past, the fall and rise, leaving McKenna with, if not a way out, a way up. MacLaverty's text is made of bite sized, staccato sentences of short, quiet authority that build brick by brick, link by link tightening amidst gloriously naturalistic dialogue. Teas are poured, awkward jokes are half made, silences left hanging and McKenna's life is reduced to short steps as the story unfolds in flashback. What MacLaverty has done with this precision of language is to avoid all sentimentality. He glories in plucking out the right word each time: a Scot's words like "cranching" meaning the sound of teeth on hard fruit.

MacLaverty was born in Belfast in 1942 and became a laboratory assistant after leaving school, writing only as a hobby. He quit his job in the early ‘70s to become a mature student, securing an English degree from Queen’s University in 1974. The next year he interrupted his teacher training to move to Scotland with his wife and four children and escape the escalating violence in Northern Ireland. The family lived first in Edinburgh and then on the Isle of Islay, where MacLaverty worked as a teacher and wrote in his spare time. His first short story collection Secrets was published in 1977, followed in 1980 by a novel

Both Cal and Lamb have been turned into successful films, and MacLaverty has also written several radio and TV plays, including Hostages , a fictionalised account of McCarthy and Brian Keenan’s captivity in Beirut. Away from writing, he has presented the classical music show Grace Notes for BBC Radio Scotland. The Anatomy School , which was published in 2001 by Jonathan Cape, is Bernard MacLaverty’s first novel for four years. Dorothy Johnston finds amusement and emptiness in
Bernard MacLaverty's The Anatomy School
B The Anatomy School Blaise encourages the others to question religion, particularly their own Catholicism as they also experience specific reactions to the priests and their personalities. There are reminders that this is the Sixties, a time of opening up, tolerance of difference and questioning of old certainties. Meanwhile there is the dawning awareness of the relevance of politics, and its relation to the education they are undergoing, and the particular directions in which their minds are stimulated. In the background are the Troubles, like some amorphous chaos at the edge of their thinking. Talkback: Got an opinion or a question about this article?
