Poems by Derek Mahon
By Robert Hass

April 19, 1998
D Everything Is Going to Be All Right How should I not be glad to contemplate
the clouds clearing beyond the dormer window
and a high tide reflected on the ceiling?
There will be dying, there will be dying,
but there is no need to go into that.
The poems flow from the hand unbidden
and the hidden source is the watchful heart.
The sun rises in spite of everything and the far cities are beautiful and bright. I lie here in a riot of sunlight watching the day break and the clouds flying. Everything is going to be all right. One of his best-known poems is an elegy for another Northern poet of an earlier generation, Louis MacNeice. It was this poem that brought Derek Mahon to mind. I was thinking of the way he plays with the idea of "future tense": In Carrowdore Churchyard Your ashes will not stir, even on this high ground

Spoken Word Home MacGowran Speaking Beckett
Jack MacGowran Samuel Beckett, dramatist, novelist, playwright and poet, was awarded the nobel prize for literature. His greatest interpreter was the Dublin actor Jack MacGowran. On this record he speaks extracts from seven of Beckett's works, including an abandoned work which has not been published elsewhere. Beckett himself supervised the recording from beginning to end. The Northern Muse Séamus Heaney, John Montague Séamus Heaney, still a young poet when this record was made, has become one of the leading figures in Irish literature, with an international reputation and a Nobel Prize for Literature. His poems on this record are from two collections, Death of a Naturalist and Door into the Dark. Montague, ten years older than Heaney, contributes the poems on Side Two, from Poisoned Lands, A Chosen Light and Hymn to the New Omagh Road. Hugh Mac Diarmid
Hugh Mac Diarmid During his lifetime, Hugh MacDiarmid was known as 'Scotland's greatest living poet', and the twenty-three pieces by which he is represented here are among his finest. Mac Diarmid set himself the task of restoring Lowland Scots as a literary language, and many of the pieces here are in that language. Others, however, are in orthodox English.

Derek Mahon
Ten of Derek Mahon's poems are available for selection to students of Leaving Certificate English students this year and again in 2004. The poems are as follows: Grandfather, Daytrip to Donegal, After the Titanic, Ecclesiastes, As It Should Be, A Disused Shed in Co. Wexford, The Chinese Restaurant in Portrush, Rathlin, Antarctica and Kinsale. Students who are studying the higher level course are advised to study at least six poems (Syllabus 6.3.) while two of the poems, Grandfather and After the Titanic, are also prescribed for students taking the ordinary level course. The following possibilities are offered as suggestions for work that might be useful with two of the above mentioned poems.
Grandfather
Approaches to the poem: Photographs : This is just one picture of an old person. Ask class to bring in photographs / pictures of other old people, either their own relatives or someone else. Begin a discussion of old age and how it must feel to be getting older. Tensions : There is a tension in the poem between the childlike man and the cunning, cute man. Make a list of the words/phrases where this is suggested and say what is thus implied about the grandfather.

Irish Poetry since The Thirties
Mr. Dawe
Course particulars for 2001/02 Most critical readings of modern Irish poetry in English start with W.B. Yeats, but what of those poets who were not directly influenced by or indebted to his example? After Yeats examines initially alternative perspectives on Irish poetry from the publication of Samuel Beckett's Echo's Bones . The course will then explore Yeats' legacy and the work of several contemporary Irish poets. Among the poets whose work will be discussed, in whole or in part, are Beckett, Brian Coffey, Denis Devlin, Louis MacNeice, Patrick Kavanagh, Richard Murphy, Thomas Kinsella, Derek Mahon and Eavan Boland. Students are required to give class presentations.
