THE new Cathaoirleach (chairperson) of Bagenalstown Town Commission is Commissioner Derek Mahon. Aged 24, Comm. Mahon may have a claim to fame as the youngest commission chairman in the 105-year history of the local authority. Derek was elected unanimously to succeed Comm. Margaret Cushen. The new Cathaoirleach said he will do his best to promote the town in every way possible. Comm Mahon said he is looking forward to the year ahead with a certain amount of optimism. Fine Gael Councillor Denis Foley was absent from the agm., sending a letter of apology as he was attending a conference in Tralee. He extended good wishes to the incoming Cathaoirleach and expressed his appreciation of the work of Margaret Cushen in that position for the past year.

Football FEVER '97
A GUIDE TO HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ON THE SOUTH PLAINS Lions continue their drive to end long playoff drought By RANDY ROSETTA
Avalanche-Journal NEW DEAL - First-year New Deal head coach Ron Mayo has been able to put a unique perspective on the Lions' 10-year playoff drought. ''The last time New Deal was in the playoffs (1987), the seniors we have now were in the second grade,'' said Mayo, who came to the Lions from highly successful Euless Trinity. ''That's too long. We want to get to the point where we're in the playoffs enough so that it's disappointing when we don't make it.'' First things, first, though. The Lions must avoid a slide back to 1995, when they suffered through an 0-9 campaign. New Deal seems poised for a step in the right direction with a core group of talent back from last year's 4-6 season. The bulk of that talent will operate on both sides of the ball. Mayo installed the wing-T offense and will put junior quarterback and returning starter Robert Montoya at the controls. In the backfield, senior Derek Reichle will start at tailback with Mark Garcia at fullback, and Eric Mahon at wingback. Spencer Freeman and Gerald Johnson will line up at the wide receiver spots, giving the Lions a potent multiple-threat offense.
