The French nobleman Joseph de Maistre (1754-1821) emphasized the importance of religious ideas for the philosophy and politics of conservatism. In this essay, de Maistre addresses the question of constitutions; in 1819, in another essay, he insists on the role of the pope in preserving international stability. From Joseph de Maistre. Alexander I used him for a time as a confidential adviser, and Maistre furnished him with observations and advice he clearly meant to apply beyond Russia herself, to the whole of contemporary Europe. He became celebrated for his political epigrams, which proved much to the taste of Alexander and his advisers, especially after the emperor's liberal phase was over. Such maxims as "Man in general, if reduced to himself, is too wicked to be free," or "Everywhere the few lead the many, for without a more or less powerful aristocracy authority is not sufficient for this end" must have found great favor in the aristocratic salons of St. Petersburg, and he is mentioned with approval in contemporary Russian memoirs. Véritable réactionnaire, ennemi acharné du libéralisme de la Révolution française de 1789, a fortiori de la révolution jacobine de Robespierre, le comte Joseph de Maistre consacre sa vie et son oeuvre (§ 1) à lutter contre les Lumières lucifériennes, pour l'unité nationale par l'ordre divin et l'expiation des péchés ( § 1. La vie et l'oeuvre Le comte Joseph de Maistre est né à Chambéry en 1753. Son père était président du Sénat de Savoie, province alors dépendante du royaume de Sardaigne. Lui-même fut magistrat puis sénateur. En 1792, lors de l'invasion française, il quitte son pays pour se réfugier en Suisse puis à Turin, capitale du royaume. De 1803 à 1817 il représente à Saint-Pétersbourg, comme envoyé extraordinaire et ministre plénipotentiaire, le roi de Sardaigne, son prince, Victor-Emmanuel 1er. Revenu à Turin en 1817, il est nommé premier président des Cours Suprêmes. Il décède à Turin en 1821. Homme de cabinet, il consacre de nombreuses heures par jour à l'écriture. Aussi ses oeuvres complètes comprennent-elles 14 volumes (Lyon 1884-1887). Il écrit notamment :

Ao ler o artigo CONSIDERAÇÕES ACERCA DAS "CONSIDÉRATIONS SUR LA FRANCE" DE JOSEPH DE MAISTRE, constante em seu site, gostaria de saber se é possível encontrar em nosso país livros de De Maistre; este homem notável, apesar de polêmico, que disse: "Ninguém afirma: `Deus não existe' sem antes ter desejado que Ele não exista" Abraços! Jamil Resposta Prezado Jamil, salve Maria! É difícil encontrar no Brasil graça a Deus as obras desse péssimo autor, que mascara seu esoterismo sob véus de catolicismo. De Joseph de Maistre se costuma dizer que ele é o autor do "Du Pape", livro no qual ele defenderia a infalibilidade papal. Na verdade, De Maistre defende a "infalibilidade", ou melhor, a "irrecorribilidade" de decisão de qualquer soberano. Com efeito, De Maistre considera que o Papa deve ser infalível, porque suas sentenção são irrecorríveis, e, para esse autor enganador, sendo uma sentença irrecorrível, ela teria que ser infalível.
