Idylls of the King
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson This version of the Arthurian legend takes the form of twelve poems published in various combinations over a 46-year period ending in 1888. Following the basic history set forth by Thomas Malory's "Le Morte Darthur," Tennyson presents a picture of King Arthur from his initial meeting with his future queen, Guinevere, to the last battle with his son, Modred. A somber view of Camelot emerges as we watch the decline of the idealistic round table and its vision of chivalry. The decay is partly attributed to Guinevere's love relationship with Sir Lancelot. This detailed work also looks at a number of key figures and the mystical quest for the Holy Grail. Limited Edition in Four Volumes
With the Scarce Original Paper Slipcases [Flint, illus.] Malory, Thomas
MORTE DARTHUR: The Book of King Arthur and of His Noble Knights of the Round Table, with the Preface by William Caxton London Philip Lee Warner for the Medici Society 1921 4 volumes. One of 500 numbered copies on Riccardi handmade paper, of which this is number 445. Illustrated with 48 tipped-in color plates after watercolors by W. Russell Flint. 4to, publisher's gray boards, linen backed with paper labels on spines, silk bookmark and an extra set of paper labels bound in each volume, t.e.g. In the very scarce original paper slipcases. xx, 168; xvi, 179; xvi, 208; xvi, 200, glossary. An extremely fine set, especially sofresh, clean, crisp and unsoiled. The rare slipcases show a bit of expected rubbing, and the case to Volume IV is showing slight cracking. A very handsome set in the original bindings, surely one of the finest editions of Malory. The beautiful watercolours of Russell Flint, combined with fine typography and paper make a remarkable impression. The slipcases have insured that these volumes have remained in the finest condition.
"Then to proceed forth in this said book, which I direct unto all noble princes, lords and ladies, gentlemen or gentlewomen, that desire to read or hear read of the noble and joyous history of the great conqueror and excellent king, King Arthur, sometime king of this noble realm, then called Britain; I, William Caxton, simple person, present this book following, which I have enprised to imprint: and treateth of the noble acts, feats of arms of chivalry, prowess, hardiness, humanity, love, courtesy, and very gentleness, with many wonderful histories and adventures."- Caxton's preface

Dent 1893 RARE FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS AND WITH THE PORTFOLIO ADDED. One of the finest editions of Malory produced. The text is that of Caxton with "the spelling made as nowadays is used."
This original edition was Aubrey Beardsley's first commissioned work, undertaken when he was not yet twenty. While working at an insurance office in London, Beardsley frequently visited the Jones and Evans bookshop in Cheapside, where he got to know Frederick Evans. Mr. Evans allowed the artist to trade drawings for books on occasion, and it was Evans who suggested to J. M. Dent that Beardsley should be the artist for Mr. Dent's new edition of the Arthurian tales. A suggestion well made and one to which 20th century printing owes much.
The commission, which came in 1892 was to "design and illustrate an ambitious edition of Malory's 'Le Morte d'Arthur' which was intended to rival the Kelmscott Press books on their own ground...(E)lements beside the pale remnants of Pre-Raphaelitism were at work fertilizing (Beardsley's) developing talent, and what was seen by its devisers as an emulation of Morris and Burne-Jones turned out in the execution more like a parody of thema parody which annoyed Morris to the point at which he contemplated legal action. It may well not have been a deliberate parody: it is simply that already, willy-nilly, the 'strong medieval decorateive feeling' of Morris was mixed, as Walter Crane noted, 'with a curious weird Japanese-like spirit of diablerie and grotesque, as of an opium dream'."

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Malory, Thomas English author. He is known for the prose romance Le Morte D'Arthur c. 1470), printed in 1485, which relates the exploits of King Arthur's knights of the Round Table and the quest for the Holy Grail . He was knight of the shire from 1445. Malory is thought to have been the Warwickshire landowner of that name who was member of Parliament for Warwick in 1445 and was subsequently charged with rape, theft, and attempted murder. If that is so, he must have compiled Le Morte D'Arthur during his 20 years in and out of prison. Based on an unidentified French book, with imaginative additions from other sources, it is the fullest version of the legends of King Arthur, and a notable contribution to English prose.
