According to Caxton, "Le Morte Darthur" was written while Malory was in prison. It is known that a rebel, Sir Thomas Malory of Newbold Revel in Warwickshire, was confined at London's Newgate prison after his disputes with the local priory, related to Lancastrian-Yorkist politics. Indeed, early in the text of "Le Morte Darthur", the author refers to himself as a knight-prisoner. He also mentions that he loves chivalry, hunting, tournaments, and had read an extensive collection of Arthurian romances. Of Le Morte d'Arthur, edited by Claxton, only one complete copy is left. A manuscript, edited by Eugene Vinaver in 1947, was discovered at Winchester College in 1934. This Author's titles If you wish further information about this author, please enter

SIR THOMAS MALORY (1420-1471) Sir Thomas Malory was the author of the most famous work of Arthurian literature, "Le Morte D'Arthur" . This literary masterpiece was made all the more remarkable because it was written by a layman living in Medieval England. Clearly not a professional writer, Sir Thomas' composition grows in power throughout its length, while his style remains simple and informal, probably much like his own speech. He saw his romances as the chronicles of an historical Arthur perhaps with a moralistic slant. They certainly show off the religious and chivalric ideas of the age which Sir Thomas must surely have shared. Little is known of the author of "Le Morte D'Arthur" and his specific identity has been much disputed. He was obviously an educated man who could read both English and French, the languages of his sources. His own writings reveal that he was a knight-prisoner around the year 1470 when he completed his literary tour de force. This points to him being the Sir Thomas Malory who was a probable Lancastrian conspirator in Cook's plot, excluded from the 1468 general pardon. Despite a notorious reputation for violent crime which conflicts considerably with the apparent chivalric values of the author of "Le Morte D'Arthur"

Sir Thomas Malory: Muse and Mentor of John Steinbeck Kira Isak Pirofski Some literature was in the air around me. The Bible I absorbed through my skin. My uncles exuded Shakespeare, and Pilgrim's Progress was mixed with my mother's milk. But these things came into my ears. They were sounds, rhythms, figures. Books were printed demons- the tongs and thumbscrews of outrageous persecution. And then, one day, an aunt gave me a book and fatuously ignored by resentment. I stared at the black print with hatred, and then, gradually, the pages opened and let me in. The magic happened. The Bible and Shakespeare and Pilgrims Progress belonged to everyone. But this was mine-It was a cut version of the Caxton Morte d' Arthur of Thomas Malory. I loved the old spelling of the words- and the words no longer used. Perhaps a passionate love for the English language opened for me from this one book (Steinbeck, 1976, 3). His love of the Arthurian legend led young Steinbeck to delve into similar literature, and after reading Morte d' Arthur, he went on to read books such as Frensshe, Black Book of Caermarthen, The Mabinogion and other Welsh Tales, Red Book of Hergist, Gildas' De Excidio Britanniae, and Giraldus Cambrensis Historia Britonum

Explorations in Arthurian Legends A Literature Review Part 6: Sir Thomas Malory One author who definitely echoed the signs of his times in his Arthurian writings was Sir Thomas Malory. Arthur looks a bit like Henry V, who was king at the time Malory was writing; and Arthur's route through France echoes Henry's moves toward Agincourt. The action, of course, takes place against the backdrop of King Arthur's Court, which Malory places at Winchester . The ideas of chivalry and courtly love are in full flower here, as they were in other stories in England in the 15th century. Did he intend his tales to be one cycle, echoing the styles of Robert de Boron and the Vulgate authors, or did he write tales one at a time and then decide later on that an effort at unification was necessary? No one knows for sure. Another raging debate among scholars is which Thomas Malory wrote the works? Four men of that name are possible suspects; the one from Warwickshire (despite his prison convictions) is believed to be the author. Whoever he was and whatever his intentions, "Malory" left us with a large body of work, which, taken together, comprise quite possibly one of the finest works ever written in the English language. Malory was writing in the right place at the right time. The printing press was just making its way to England, and a man named
