MANILIUS, GAIUS
says that hardly any Roman except Caesar, Cicero and Fronto had treated the subject, it is probable that he did not know the work of Manilius. The latest event referred to in the poem (i. 898) is the great defeat of Varus by Arminius in the Teutoburgiensis Saltus (A.D. 9). The fifth book was not written till the reign of Tiberius; the work appears to be incomplete, and was probably never published. See editions by J. Scaliger (1579); R. Bentley (I7~9); F. Jacob (1846); A. G. Pingré (1786); and T. Breiter (Leipzig, 1907; and commentary 1909); of book i. by A. E. Housman (1903). On the subject generally see M. Bechert, De emendandi Manilhl Ralione (1878) and De M. M. Asironomicorum Poeta (1891); B. Freier, De M. Astronom. Aetate (1880); A. Cramer, De Manilii Elocut zone (very full; 1882); G. Lanson, De Manilio Poeta, with select bibliog. (1887); P. Monceaux, Les Africains (a study of the Latin literature of Africa; 1894); R. Ellis, Noctes Manilianae (1891); J. P. Postgate, Silva Maniliana (1897), chiefly on textual questions; P. Thomas, Lacubrationes Manilianae (1888), a collation of the Gemblacensis (Gembloux )MS.; F. Those first: then those which roll a different way

Katharina VOLK Manilius' Heavenly Steps ( Astronomica As frequently noted by scholars, Manilius in his astrological poem likes to picture himself as traveling through the heavens. In this paper, I examine one particular instance of the motif of the celestial journey, three lines that have been considered spurious (most notably by Bentley and Housman) but that I argue are entirely consonant with both Manilius' poetic technique and his larger world-view. After the proem of Astronomica 4, the poet signals his transition to the main topic of the book, the discussion of zodiacal influences: quod quoniam docui, superest nunc ordine certo caelestis fabricare gradus, qui ducere flexo tramite pendentem ualeant ad sidera uatem The wish of the poet to reach the stars is based on the popular notion that fame equals a rising to the sky, and Manilius may be alluding in particular to two famous lines of Horace ( Carm. While a normal ladder implies a strictly vertical movement, Manilius' steps run along a curved path. I believe that the flexus trames is a reference to the zodiac, whose treatment begins in the immediately following lines. Thus, for the greater part of Book 4, the poet is indeed moving along the zodiac, discussing the properties and influence of each individual sign in turn. In this context, it is striking that

By G.F.C. Plowden , Reply by Bernard Knox In response to Closet Modern (March 15, 1984) To the Editors In his review of Norman Page's life of A.E. Housman, Bernard Knox again discusses the oft-discussed question of Housman's choice of Manilius to edit. There should be no great puzzle: it was a task ready-made for his talents and ambitions. The Astronomica I see no difficulty in explaining his choice of Manilius, though it might have been difficult to explain any other choice. Surely also we ought to be grateful for it, for what other scholar could have accomplished what he did for a difficult and virtually unread Augustan text? Anybody who can should at least sample his edition, and may be surprised to find how interesting, even exhilarating it is. G.F.C. Plowden London, England Bernard Knox replies: The Regius Professor's footnotes are a welcome addition, especially his vision of Housman handing out grades for performance (though I must confess to a liking for Mr. Bell's time-table reading). I must defer to his judgment of Housman's work on the text of the Greek tragedians; as editor of the new Oxford Classical Text of Sophocles he must have given careful consideration to Housman's many suggestions in this area. I am, however, quite unconverted on the subject of Manilius. Rhetoric he has in abundance but the wit and elegance are in short supply. Housman remarked at one point on Manilius's "eminent aptitude for doing sums in verse, which is the brightest feature of his genius." Translated from the Latin and stripped of the verse a typical passage reads like this:
