    Camillo Mariani
Born: 1567, Vicenza Died: July 1611, Rome (buried in Church of S. Susanna)
CAMILLO MARIANI, after establishing himself as a successful sculptor in Vicenza and the Veneto, removed at age 30 to Rome, where his work provided an important bridge between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Mariani, whose family came originally from Siena, began his career in the workshop of Lorenzo and Agostino Rubini in Vicenza, and was probably involved in the statuary decoration at the Teatro Olimpico of Vicenza, designed by history's most influential architect, Andrea Palladio . By 1589 he was one of the nine sculptors commissioned by Vincenzo Scamozzi to complete the acroteriali atop the Jacopo Sansovino -designed Marciana Library in Piazza di S. Marco at Venice. Mariani contributed three of the stone statues Perserpine Hymen (destroyed when the nearby belltower collapsed in the early 1900s) and Aeolus in the period 1588-91.

Lost Puritan: A Life Of Robert Lowell
    Paul Mariani
    W.W. Norton, $27.50
    by Don Share
"History," Dr. Johnson claimed, "may be formed from permanent monuments and records, but Lives can only be written from personal knowledge, which is growing every day less, and in a short time is lost forever." In his poetry, Robert Lowell collapsed the distinction between history and biography, as if he took for granted that the individual has a personal relationship with history, and that history is the record of personal moments that endure like monuments. Reading about Lowell's life, it's tempting to believe that he had been predestined to live a public life. As Elizabeth Bishop marveled in a letter to him, "I could write in as much detail about my Uncle Artie, say but what would be the significance. . . .Whereas all you have to do is put down the names!" His work came from the nexus of the crises, personal as well as political, that now seem to epitomize the decades in which he lived.
In good Johnsonian fashion, Paul Mariani has sifted through everything from existing works about Lowell to previously unavailable correspondence, newly conducted interviews, and uncollected writing in an attempt to capture contemporary testimony as if it were about to vanish altogether. The resulting patchwork of such material threatens to smother its subject with overwhelming detail, yet for all that it scarcely alters the common perception of Lowell as a man who was brilliant, determined, and frequently ill. Each bit of the history Mariani unearths tends to reiterate what Lowell summed up in just a few grim lines:

Finding-Aid for the Donald Finkel Papers - Group I and Group II
    Papers, 1947-1983.
ca. 5580 items Access: Open Donald Finkel, Poet-in-residence at Washington University since 1960, has produced a sizable body of innovative poetry over the past two decades. He was born in New York and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University. Much of his teaching career has been at Washington University where he developed the Writers' Program with his wife, Constance Urdang, but he has also taught at the University of Iowa, Bard College, and Bennington College. Finkel has written ten volumes of poetry, beginning with The Clothings' New Emperor (1959). His most recent volume, The Detachable Man , was published in 1985. Finkel's work has not received the extensive critical attention often given to the work of other authors; yet, what has been said about his poems is overwhelmingly positive. Finkel is a painstaking researcher and collector of information and his poems reflect this. They are grounded in a thorough understanding and appreciation of their subjects and often contain "found" texts. Reflecting Finkel's unique place among American poets, his papers represent one of the more interesting groups in the Washington University manuscript collection. His extensive research materials, journals, notes, and heavily revised manuscripts comprise the bulk of the Finkel Papers. A large collection of editorial matter toward all of his books and a small, yet revealing professional correspondence with editors and literary colleagues completes the Finkel Collection.
