english 405 pan-american studies EPICS OF THE AMERICAS This course extends students’ understanding of the epic as genre—nurtured perhaps already through previous study of Homer, The Old Testament, Dante, Milton and Wordsworth—to the comparative study of epic poetry written in 20th century North, South and Central America. These epics of the Americas thematically and stylistically envision a new world order—and with it, new literatures, new societies and new cultural maps. Atwood, Williams, and Marlatt reveal North American verities in their writings; Césaire examines the African Diaspora of the Caribbean and the history of colonialism in his writing; Paz examines Mayan mythologies from a contemporary Mexican perspective while Neruda "reads" the Incan past in a prophetically socialist manner; and Walcott examines the individual life in a radically late 20th century revision of Wordsworth’s Prelude , tracing his development as a world poet from his earliest childhood in the remotest margins of the Caribbean. Some of these poems are domestic in their focus, some political, and others mythic, trans-national. All share

Course Description
This course examines a prominent—yet largely critically neglected—Canadian literary genre: the long poem. From Oliver Goldsmith’s early 19 th Century depiction of Maritime colonial life and traditions in The Rising Village to Robert Kroetsch’s late 20 th Century exploration of Prairie experience in Field Notes and Stephen Scobie’s “speculative biography” of Bob Dylan in And Forget My Name , the Canadian long poem has been a resilient and challenging genre. Key questions to be raised in this course will be why the long (or narrative) poem or poem sequence seems to be somewhat over-represented in Canadian literary history and why literary critics have had difficulties categorizing the long poem generically. The representative Canadian narrative poems on the course reading list are meant to help students place the long poem in a Canadian historical context (both literary history and social/political history). The focus, however, will be on the close reading, analysis and interpretation of the texts themselves.
Course Objectives By the course conclusion, the student will
