The celebrated English dramatist Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury, the son of a shoemaker. A brilliant child, he was allowed to attend the King's School . He went on to Cambridge University where he graduated in 1584. He then began to pursue his master's degree but his studies were mysteriously interrupted in 1587. That interruption was the undertaking of an espionage assignment.
Marlowe had met and befriended Francis Walsingham , who served as secretary of state to Elizabeth I. Walsingham was a crafty, cunning man who established a vast and effective spy network for the protection of his sovereign. He detected many conspiracies and smashed plots to overthrow Elizabeth , including the Throckmorton Conspiracy of 1583, the Anthony Babington plot of 1586, and through his spies he the planned invasion of the Spanish Armada in 1587. In that same year, when Marlowe vanished from Cambridge Walsingham was attempting to detect another conspiracy against Elizabeth headed by her own sister, Mary Queen of Scots

of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, who provided for her training as a singer at the Vienna Conservatoire. After three years’ study she made a successful stage debut, but was compelled in cDnsequence of deafness to abandon this career. She then became reader and travelling companion to her patroness, and her life at the court and on her many travels furnished her with material for her novels. In 1863 she resigned her post, and then lived with her brother at Arnstadt until her death on the 22nd of June 1887. Her first novel, Die zwolf Apostel, was published in the Gartenlaube in 1865 and this was followed in 1866 by Goldelse (23rd ed, 1890), with which she established her literary reputation. Among others of her novels may be mentioned Blaubart (1866); Das Geheimnis der alten Mamsell (1867; 13th ed., 1888); Reic/isgrafin Gisela (1869; 9th ed., 1900), Das Heideprinzesschen (1871; 8th ed., 1888) and Im Hause des Kommerzienrats (1877; 5th ed., 1891). All these works are directed against social prejudices, but, although attractively written, are deficient in higher literary qualities and appeal mostly to juvenile readers. E. Marlitt’s Gesammelte Romane und Novellen were published in 10 volumes (1888—1890; 2nd ed., 1891—1894), to which is appended a biographical memoir.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Marlowe, Christopher English poet and dramatist. His work includes the blank-verse plays Tamburlaine the Great in two parts (158788), The Jew of Malta (about 1591), Edward II (about 1592) and Dr Faustus (about 1594), the poem Hero and Leander (1598), and a translation of parts of Ovid's Amores . Marlowe transformed the new medium of English blank verse into a powerful, melodic form of expression. He was born in Canterbury and educated at Cambridge University, where he is thought to have become a government agent. His life was turbulent, with a brief imprisonment in connection with a man's death in a brawl (of which he was cleared), and a charge of atheism (following statements by the dramatist Thomas Kyd under torture). He was murdered in a Deptford tavern, allegedly in a dispute over the bill, but it may have been a political killing.

Home Ancient Theatre Medieval Theatre 16th Century ... Email Us CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE (1564-1593) T HERE can be no question of the genius of Christopher Marlowe, nor of the far-reaching effect of his work on English drama. He dared disregard the classical unities in favor of a natural unity which comes from centering the action around one great character or great passion. He created an English drama in place of a slavish imitation of Greek and Latin dramas. He was, perhaps, the pioneer who blazed a trail for that still greater English dramatist born the same year, William Shakespeare Christopher Marlowe was the son of a shoemaker. He studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1583. Before he received his master's degree in 1587, his greatest tragic drama had been presented on the stage. Before he finished college he had also done at least part of the work of translating Ovid's Amores into English verse.
