Review Marsden, John. Tomorrow When the War Began John Marsden's Tomorrow When the War Began is a gripping work of fiction. While reading his book, it is hard to believe that you are actually reading a work of fiction because the events are so close to reality that it is frightening. The book contains realistic scenes, dramatic action, well-developed characters and plots, and all aspects of human emotion. The book begins with a group of teens who want to get a break from life so they go out into the Australian outback for a week of fun. Their camping trip ends, and the group returns to what they thought would be their normal lives. They never imagined the terror they find-their homes ransacked, their pets and livestock dead and dying. But worst of all, their families are gone. Australia has been invaded, and the teens are forced to become fugitives in the night, dodging patrols of enemy soldiers and bullets in the dark. The teens are faced with a choicegive up or fight back. Tomorrow When the War Began leads you from beginning to end into the chilly hands of war and shows you the epic adventure from childhood into adulthood as the teens are forced to live in a way they have never lived before.

More on John Marsden
John Marsden was born in Melbourne, Australia, the third of four children, in 1950.
His first dim memories however are of the small Victorian country town of Kyneton, to which his parents moved when John was two. In whose days the iceman still delivered to families without refrigerators, cooking was done on a fuel stove, and no-one had television. John began school there and perhaps too acquired his liking for country living which has never left him.
In 1956 the family moved again, to Devonport, on the green north coast of Tasmania.
For four years John attended Devonport Primary School, where his interest in reading and writing first became marked. He developed into a prodigious reader, exhausting both the school library and the town library.
An inspiring teacher in Grade 4 motivated John and a friend to produce a class newspaper, which gave him an early taste for publication.
His first stories were imitations of his favourite authors, W E Johns, Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie, but another early role model was the outstanding Tasmanian writer Nan Chauncy, three-time winner of the Children's Book Of the Year Award.

Its an awesome book! A bit gory but very  good. It's all about 7 teenagers who go hiking for 5 days, they come out and their country has been invaded! They then go around blowing up bridges, trains and air force planes.
Recommended 12yrs up.

The Q5 Archives
John Marsden, now KN6SE, got his first ticket in the early 1970s. He recalls working several Field Days with the late Ken Wahrenbrock , KF6NC, and the late Reed Craven , WB6BFK. Straining his memory, John recalls some of the other members whose names and/or calls which may sound familiar to present members. These include current members Merritt Yancey Bob Wartenbe , WB6GJW, and Mike Gauthier , K6ICS. For a while John represented DARC at some of the early 2-meter band planning meetings before the days of TASMA. He reports at that time DARC was given a repeater pair (of frequencies), but never acted to implement a repeater. John’s Novice ticket expired during this period and he dropped out of the Club. It was not until 1993 that he got his General ticket which he upgraded to Advanced in 1994. In 2000, he again upgraded, this time to Extra. At the Coroner’s office where, as almost everyone knows, John is employed as a photographer, he has put together a station entirely designed for disaster communications - a station that occupies its own dedicated room.
For those who don’t know where the Coroner’s office is, it can be found on the General Hospital’s grounds, tucked away in the southwest corner of the property. The station covers 80 meters through 1.2 GHz using mostly Kenwood equipment. There are two rigs on each of the UHF/VHF bands, that is two each for 2-meters, 220 MHz, 440 MHz, and 1.2 GHz, plus an HF transceiver with a legal-limit power amplifier. An HF beam adorns the top of their tower.

Back to LETTERS FROM THE INSIDE John Marsden
(Author of the Novel) Australian writer John Marsden was born in Melbourne in 1950. His novel, Tomorrow When The War Began (the first of a seven volume series), was recently ranked as Australia's fourth most beloved book, behind Lord of the Rings , and ahead of The Bible . Beginning with his 1987 novel, So Much To Tell You , which won the Christopher Medal in America and the 1988 Children's Book of the Year Award in Australia, Marsden has written more than a dozen popular books, including The Great Gatenby Out Of Time The Journey Take My Word For It Dear Miffy and Checkers Letters From The Inside was based on a number of true stories: a newspaper account of a girl who found out when she was sixteen that her father had murdered her mother, a television interview with the girlfriend of a murderer, a conversation with a girl who had a violent brother, and John's own experiences in a Tasmanian prison when arrested during a conservation demonstration. The book was too strong for some. One Sydney reviewer called it "the most pernicious book I have ever read" and commented that it made American Psycho look like a spotless lamb. Others, however, differed. Noted American author Robert Cormier wrote that it was "unforgettable... absolutely shattering," and added that "John Marsden... is a major writer who deserves world-wide acclaim." Many adults were unnerved by the book but young people loved it. One was moved to describe John as the "Poet Laureate of Australian teenagers.
