John Marston; His Family, and His Career Introduction John Marston was an extremely successful Victorian manufacturer who's goods helped to make the name Wolverhampton synonymous with quality. He became one of the country's largest manufacturers of japanware, and later made bicycles, motorcycles and cars, that were second to none. He also had an active public life and became Lord Mayor of the town. The Early Years
The Oaks In 1865 John married Ellen Edge, who was seven years his junior. Their first son Charles was born on April 6th 1867. The business prospered and when Edward Perry died in 1871, John purchased Perry's Jeddo works to become one of the major manufacturers of japanware in the town. John and Ellen lived at the Oaks in Merridale Road and had another nine children. The eldest girl and youngest boy died at an early age. In 1877 the works were extended into Paul Street. The product range included bread dishes, dish covers, pots, pans, kettles, spirit lamps, foot warmers and black enamel ware. John even invented a machine for melting snow, but it was not successful. The company became one of the two largest makers of black enamelled ware in the country. John also became a member of a local school board, and then a local councillor for St. Paul's ward in 1885.
John in his early 50's During the same year Charles entered the business at the age of 18. He was unpaid, and in the mornings worked on clerical duties such as invoicing. He then caught the 11.38 train to Birmingham, to attend a part-time chemistry course at Mason College, which is now part of Birmingham University. On his arrival in Birmingham he would have lunch with friends at Pattison's or Benson's and after his lecture would catch the 1.40 North Western train back to Wolverhampton. Back at the works he would work in the dispatch department, sending off the orders. He arrived home at about 6 o'clock and after tea would have a singing lesson, practice the organ or play whist with his sisters.

A Son's Memography
Ancestors
Before going overseas in 1976 I heard that if going to England it was handy to have proof that a Grandparent was born in England. I knew my Grandfather on Dad's side fell into this category so I got a series of official copies of birth and marriage certificates. From these are deduced the following ancestory.
John Leslie Marston was born in Dunedin on the 2nd of September 1913 to Annie Mary Jane Marston (nee Smith) aged 29 and her husband George Ernest Marston, Wireworker, aged 31. George Ernest Marston was the son of John Marston, Iron Plate Worker and Fanny Marston (nee Stephens) of Bethnal Green in the County of Middlesex and was born on the 8th of July 1882 at 4 Baudon Road. It is interesting to note that Jack's occupation was Boilermaker and that one of his sons, Jim, became a Fitter and Turner. The iron working trades was carried on for 4 generations as was the names John and Ernest in the youngest son of Jack - Jon Ernest Marston. I inherited the name Leslie as my middle name. Jim, the eldest son appears to have got Jim from Jack's brother and Robert from Mom's brother. Alan was imported new from I don't know where.
1913 To 1946
Jack Marston grew up in various locations from North Dunedin to South Dunedin, as the family shifted several time in this period. St Kilda, where the Marston family finally settled was the most heavily populated part of New Zealand and a staunch working class area dominated by the Hillside Railway Workshops to the West, the shopping area to the North, St Kilda and St Clair Beaches to the East and the hills of South Dunedin to the South. Jack was the second of three sons and the youngest child a daughter; in order Ernie, Jack, Jim and Maire. That's Jack on the left in the photo below.

John Leslie Marston (Jack)
Part II
A Memography
Post-War Politics
The period 1947 - 1985 was dominated by the Cold War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the constant threat of nuclear war. It appears on reflection that human history is a catalogue of wars, and still is. I couldn't avoid the prevailing atmosphere and neither could Jack's generation - the only thing that differentiated people was what side they were on. A few extremely brave souls didn't take sides and paid dearly in a lonely life. War, it was said, is politics with another name. For a while the beatniks and hippie generation were able to make dropping-out an artform, but it didn't last and it didn't hold any water with Jack or anyone much over 25. Jack stood firmly on the side of the `working-class'.

The Drama of John Marston
Critical Re-Visions
Edited by T. F. Wharton
In stock Celebrating the 400th anniversary of John Marston’s debut as a professional playwright, this collection of critical essays on his work by leading scholars in the early modern field discovers, in the de-centred, hilarious, but unsettling work of this idiosyncratic Renaissance dramatist, an uncannily post-modern voice. Always at odds with his contemporaries, the censor and sometimes his own audience, Marston is shown to be a deeply conflicted figure but the qualities which estranged him from previous critical eras are precisely those that are now instantly accessible. This volume’s essays, the themes of which coincide both in contemporary currents in literary theory and criticism and in the plays of John Marston, reveal at every turn the full extent of his ambiguity towards politics, gender and the very medium he wrote for and in.

Review TF Wharton, ed. The Drama of john marston Critical ReVisions.Cambridge Cambridge University Press, 2000. For a dramatist
http://www.umpi.maine.edu/~ricer/research/marstonrevisions.htm
Review: T. F. Wharton, ed. The Drama of John Marston: Critical Re-Visions . Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000. For a dramatist with at least three canonically important works ( The Dutch Courtesan The Malcontent , and Antonio’s Revenge ) contemporary critics have been especially chary of addressing John Marston’s plays. Of those three works, one ( Antonio’s Revenge ) finds general mention only as a spectacularized and stylized foil to Hamlet . Indeed, only a single work— The Dutch Courtesan —today receives attention approaching any degree of regularity: Susan Baker, Donna Hamilton, and Jean Howard have each written outstanding materialist/feminist appraisals. This continuing paucity of critical regard is especially surprising given the astonishing generic range and inventiveness of Marston’s plays as well as their incisive representations of a particularly volatile period in Early Modern culture. Marston collaborated brilliantly with some of the most distinguished dramatists of the period (Ben Jonson and George Chapman on Eastward Ho!

Mine
In that tranced hush when sound sank awed to rest,
Ere from her spirit's rose-red, rose-sweet gate
Came forth to me her royal word of fate,
Did she sigh "Yes," and droop upon my breast;
While round our rapture, dumb, fixed, unexpressed
By the seized senses, there did fluctuate
The plaintive surges of our mortal state,
Tempering the poignant ecstasy too blest.
Do I wake into a dream, or have we twain,
Lured by soft wiles to some unconscious crime,
Dared joys forbid to man? Oh, Light supreme,
Upon our brows transfiguring glory rain,
Nor let the sword of thy just angel gleam
On two who entered heaven before their time!
Immortality
An Inference
If I had lived ere seer or priest unveiled
A life to come, methinks that, knowing thee,
I should have guessed thine immortality;
For Nature, giving instincts, never failed
To give the ends they point to. Never quailed
The swallow, through air-wilds, o'er tracts of sea,
To chase the summer; seeds that prisoned be
Dream of and find the daylight. Unassailed
By doubt, impelled by yearnings for the main

Hendrik Goltzius Completed in 1593, Goltzius paid very little attention to the marble texture that the statue should have had. Instead Goltzius focused primarily on the human figure because the painting is at the moment right before Galatea comes to life. The Roman Numerals below the painting state the following:

    http://freespace.virgin.net/mw.berrie/james_engines/villiers.htm
The Villiers Company was founder in Wolverhampton by John Marston. Though its origins can be traced back to the mid 19th century ,it was around 1880 that a small 8 man workforce started producing safety bicycles which at the time was a lucrative market .With the arrival of new pedal making machinery , the fledgling company was forced to move to a new larger factory site at Villiers Street in Wolverhampton .With the move came a new name "The Villiers Component Company " being named firstly after the street where the factory was located in which was in turn named after a local Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton. The new company made many developments in the cycle industry and was already producing bicycle freewheel hubs when it expanded the idea into the emerging motorcycling market produce a heavy duty version of their free wheel hub. In 1912 the Villiers Component Company became a Private Limited Company and with with it came a change of name to "The Villiers Engineering Company " .The new company correctly identified the need to produce a small engine for the many independent motorcycle manufactures now based in the industrial Midlands . Their first engine was well received and at 349cc was capable of 46 mph on the banked Brooklands race track. Though a simple engine using a Bosch waterproof magneto , the design was compact and compared to the standard 500cc used on larger machines , was much smaller yet gave equal or better performance .
