Essay and Poem by Liliana Rodriguez La Habana, birthday girl...

I don't think one can celebrate someone's birthday by proxy, because the representation, no matter how sincere, always takes away from the authenticity of the hugs, the toasts, the cake with the candles, and the many versions of Happy Birthday. I must say, however, that on November 16th, 2001, I celebrated a birthday, even though I couldn't ...
Even though I couldn't be there...to traverse her on foot, to cover myself in the nostalgia that her buildings and cobblestones exude, to see her people turned now into goblins who walk around, speaking without pronouncing words of a past that persists, despite the political speeches.
La Habana is not modest, no. She is a proud, haughty, challenging survivor by nature.

Read a brief biography of this Cuban poet that highlights his role in Cuba's independence movement from Spain. Born in Havana, Cuba, José Julián Martí y Pérez was the son of poor Spanish immigrants.

Born in Havana, Cuba La Patria Libre (Free Fatherland) in 1869. Soon he was arrested for denouncing a pro-Spanish classmate and was sentenced to six years at hard labor. Spain where he published, , a rousing attack on Cuban prisons. He received his university education in Madrid and Zaragoza and then returned to the Western Hemisphere. (Caracas) and (Buenos Aires). He wrote everything from a magazine for children ( Edad de Oro ) to poetry ( Versos sencillos 1891), to essays on the nature of the United States which he admired for its energy and industry as well as its notable statesmen, particularly the framers of the Constitution. However, he denounced its imperialist attitude toward its southern neighbors. Yet, despite his busy literary career, he spent much of his time planning the second Cuban struggle for independence. He insisted that the next war should be short (to avoid U.S. intervention) and fought with a "republican method and spirit" (to forestall the possibility of a military dictatorship.) In 1892 he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party to organize the coming struggle. By early 1895, his preparations were complete. He would set sail with the generals from the last struggle and considerable supplies from Fernandina, Florida. It was only in the 1920's and 1930's that Martí was embraced by a new generation of nationalist Cubans as "el apóstol," and cherished by many other Latin Americans as well. As the great Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío noted, Martí belonged to "an entire race, an entire continent."

Marti, Jose 1853-95, Cuban essayist, poet, and patriot, leader of the Cuban struggle for independence. One of the greatest prose writers of Spanish America, he is noted for his fluent style and vivid imagery. In (1891) and other essays he brilliantly analyzed the sociopolitical problems of Latin America. As a poet he wrote the famous Ismaelillo Versos libres (c.1882, pub. 1913), and a collection of exquisite lyrics, Versos sencillos (1891). His disregard for the stilted rhetoric of most 19th-century Spanish literature made him a precursor of the modernismo Sun. See biographies by Felix Lizoso (1953, repr. 1974) and R. B. Gray (1962).

Jose Marti, uniting figure of Cuba CUBA GLOSSARY Revolution monument in Havana. Both the Castro regime and its right-wing opponents based in Miami have claimed Jose Marti as their own. If Fidel Castro divides Cubans around the world into pros and antis, Jose Marti, the hero of the country's independence struggle against the Spanish, unites them
The thin, frail, intellectual who was shot dead in his first battle, early in the campaign that would actually lead to Cuban independence in 1898, strikes a very different image to Castro and Guevara, whose image is of epic heroes who fought dozens of battles while chomping on Havana cigars.
But he had done all the hard work by then - 15 years of night and day campaigning , fundraising, speechgiving and agitation in the United States, where he had fled after a prison term in Cuba for treason.

History of Cuba 2. Jose Marti 1853-1895 and the War of Independence by Hannah Caller Jose Marti is the national hero of Cuba, his revolutionary writings studied by every child in the country. In yet another attempt to insult the Cuban Revolution, the US radio and TV channels specially created to broadcast subversive and hostile propaganda into Cuba from Florida are called Radio and TV Marti.
    • Jose Marti, political activist, poet, journalist and teacher, was born in Cuba. His father was Spanish and his mother was from the Canary islands. From a young age he was politically involved and came into conflict with the government, doing 6 years hard labour at 16 years old for anti-government activity, and then being deported to Spain.
    • He spent time in the USA where he mobilised support for the Cuban revolution amongst Cuban exiles. He was against the annexation of Cuba to the US, being proposed in the 1880s mostly by middle class Cubans and supported by the USA. 'In the USA, the causes of unity instead of coalescing, have become dispersed; humanity's problems, instead of being solved, have been increased, democracy has been corrupted and indermined and has given birth to menacing poverty and hatred.'
    • Jose Marti believed that the Cuban liberation struggle could only be built by the working class. During the 10 Year War, some leaders had relied on rich Cuban emigres and ignored the black working class. In the US, much of his work was based amongst the black Cuban tobacco workers who had emigrated to find work. He said, 'There is no danger of war between the races in Cuba. Man means more than white man, mulatto or black man. The souls of white men and negroes have risen together from the battlefield where they have fought and died for Cuba.'

    40. Pensamientos De Jose Marti

    http://xld.com/public/cuba/martip.htm
