Andrew Marvell was born in Winestead-in-Holderness in 1621. The son of a vicar, he spent his childhood in the town of Hull and attended the Grammar School there. He subsequently attended Trinity College, Cambridge. He travelled widely following the death of his father in 1641 and spent some five years visiting Holland, Italy, France and Spain. He was a friend of John Milton who recommended him for the post of Assistant Latin Secretary to the Council of State in 1653 - he finally got the job in 1657! While most of his poetry was not published during his lifetime, he did have a number of satires published, notably The Rehearsal Transposed which was published in two parts and was a rebuttal of the opinions of the Archdeacon of Canterbury. Samuel Parker. Marvell died on 16 August 1678.

Andrew Marvell, Various Short Poems, the "Mower and the Garden" group, "An Horatian Ode: Upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland" Genre: metrically experimental lyrics, many in the pastoral mode, and a "balanced" or "Horatian" ode describing its subject's strengths and weaknesses. Form: Marvell's most common strategy is alternation of short and long lines, like the tetrameter-trimeter groups in "The Coronet" or the pentameter-tetrameter pairs in "The Mower Against Gardens." He also likes tetrameter couplets ("To His Coy Mistress," "Bermudas," "A Dialogue Between the Soul and Body," and "The Nymph Complaining"), which anticipate the pentameter couplet ("heroic couplet") whose measured balance becomes the hallmark of the next century's poetry. The "Horatian Ode" alternates tetrameter and trimeter couplets in which the first pair sets up a situation which the second, shorter pair tartly comments upon. Sometimes the sentiment is admiration (ll. 27-8, 43-4, 75-6) and at others, ambiguous truth (ll. 99-10) or outright criticism (ll. 15-16, 119-120). Characters: Marvell's most famous personae are Damon , the hapless mower in love with Juliana and hostile to gardens, the sentimentally grieving "Nymph,"

Andrew Marvell
Andrew Marvell, attended Cambridge, graduating with a B.A. in 1638. After a decade of oblivion, he reappeared in 1650 as a tutor to the daughter of Sir Thomas Fairfax, Lord-General of the Parliamentarian forces. In 1657 he was appointed assistant to John Milton, Latin Secretary of the Commonwealth, and is given credit with at least saving Milton from a long jail term and possibly with saving him from execution after the Restoration. In 1659 Marvell was elected to Parliament, a position he held with competence until his death. A moderate Puritan, Marvell supported individual liberty and tolerance. His poetic output is small but of high quality and remarkable diversity. His poetry, which has been described as "the most major minor verse in English," is witty and playful, like Robert Herrick's, but much more profound. During his lifetime he was known as author of satires in prose and verse. His "serious" poetry was published in 1681, three years after his death, by a woman who claimed to be his widow but who probably had been his housekeeper

    Andrew Marvell
English poet. His early work had echoes of Cavalier poets like Lovelace and Cleveland, but he is now regarded as one of the best metaphysical poets. His finest poems include The Garden, Upon Appleton House, An Horatian Ode: Upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland. He wrote prose and verse satires which were the best before Dryden's, but are no longer well known. His reputation as a lyric poet is built on To His Coy Mistress, a classic in metaphysical poetry and ranked alongside the best secular poems of John Donne.

Workman, Persecution in the Early Church (London, 1906); Paul Allard, Ten Lectures on the Martyrs (London, 1907); John Foxe, The Book of Martyrs; Mary I. Bryson, Cross and Crown (London, 1904). MARTYROLOGY, a catalogue or list of martyrs, or, more exactly, of saints, arranged in the order of their anniversaries. This is the now accepted meaning in the Latin Church. In the Greek Church the nearest equivalent to the martyrology is the Synaxarium (q.v.). As regards form, we should distinguish between simple martyrologies, which consist merely of an Gregory XIII., who imposed the Roman martyrology upon the whole Church. In 1586 Baronius published his annotated edition, which in spite of its omissions and inaccuracies is a mine of valuable information. The chief works on the martyrologies are those of Rosweyde, who in 1613 published at Antwerp the martyrology of Ado (also edition of Giorgi, Rome, 1745); of Sollerius, to whom we owe a learned edition of Usuard (Acta sanctorum Junii, vols. vi. and vii.); and of Fiorentini, who published in 1688 an annotated edition of the Martyrology of St Jerome. The critical edition of the latter by J. B. de Rossi and Mgr. L. Duchesne, was published in 1894, in vol. ii. of the Acta sanctorum Novembris. The historical martyrologies taken as a whole have been studied by Dom Quentin (1908). There are also numerous editions of calendars or martyrologies of less universal interest, and commentaries upon them. Mention ought to be made of the famous calendar of Naples, commented on by Mazocchi (Naples, 1744) and Sabbatini (Naples, 1744).
