The Hill
from The Spoon River Anthology
by Edgar Lee Masters
"The Hill" is the first selection in Masters' Spoon River Anthology. The original work was published as a serialized version in 1914-15. In the Anthology, the dead in an Illinois graveyard relay, in matter-of-fact but haunting tones, details from their lives. The Anthology was original, provocative and influentual. Its literary significance has been compared with Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass [published in 1855]. Masters wove a thread of partial reality throughout the Anthology. Many of the characters and their experiences can be identified with former residents of Lewistown and Petersburg, Illinois. Masters' used his childhood experiences in these two communities, as a basis for the poems.
The Hill
Where are Elmer, Herman, Bert, Tom and Charley,
The weak of will, the strong of arm, the clown, the boozer, the fighter?
All, all are sleeping on the hill.
One passed in a fever,
One was burned in a mine,
One was killed in a brawl,
One died in a jail

Lewistown, Illinois Post Office by Ida Abelman - 1941
The City of Lewistown, with a population of around 2,500, is the third largest community in Fulton County. It is served by Illinois routes 24 and 97 and is within 14 miles of Spoon River College and Canton. Lewistown was founded in 1821 by Ossian Ross and named for his son. In 1823, Lewistown became the county seat of the newly created Fulton County, which at that time extended to the Wisconsin border. The records of the first marriage performed in Chicago, that of Ellen Kinzie to Indian Agent Dr. Alexander Wolcott in 1823, were filed in the Lewistown Courthouse. Running a lodging establishment takes a great deal of time and dedication. It can often be a twenty-four-hour a day job and customer satisfaction is extremely important.

Anti-Imperialist Writings by Edgar Lee Masters
By Jim Zwick
Photograph of Edgar Lee Masters
A lthough he began his career as a lawyer, Edgar Lee Masters (1869-1950) is well-known today as a poet, his Spoon River Anthology still appreciated by many. Unlike most of the anti-imperialists, Masters opposed the Spanish-American War. "I had read enough in the papers to know that war was avoidable," he wrote in his autobiography, Across Spoon River (1936), "and I resolved to have nothing to do with it." He was roused to action by the annexation of the Philippines and the beginning of the new war there. He threw himself into studying the history of the Constitution and the United States' republican form of government, and within the next few years wrote a play, Maximilian (1902), a volume of poetry, and a series of essays on imperialism. During the 1900 presidential campaign, he wrote numerous essays and speeches opposing imperialism and supporting the campaign of William Jennings Bryan , the anti-imperialist Democratic candidate. In October of 1900

Across Spoon River: An Autobiography
Edgar Lee Masters (1936; rpt. Univ. of Illinois Press, 1991); Prairie State Book Series; Paperback.
First published in 1936, this autobiography is the best source of information about Masters's opposition to imperialism. Masters discusses how he addressed imperialism both in his writings and through practical politics, writing tracts about the unconstitutionality of imperialism and by supporting William Jennings Bryan during the presidential campaign of 1900. He discusses the impact his opposition to imperialism had on his career and relates later events, including U.S. entry into World World I, to the change in foreign policy at the turn of the century.

Spoon River Anthology
Edgar Lee Masters (MacMillan, 1997); Paperback.
In this landmark book of poems the dead in the cemetery of the fictional Illinois town of Spoon River relate episodes from their lives in an easy, conversational manner. The brief, often poignant life-stories accumulate to convey the history of social changes in the Midwest and reflect on numerous national events, including the Philippine-American War.

In 1915, Edgar Lee Masters published The Spoon River Anthology, a book of 244 poems spoken by the deceased residents of Spoon River (a rural area in Illinois) from their graves on "the hill". The book created a stir because many of the supposedly fictional speakers were recognizable as real people. The poems are remarkable for the breadth of personalities and the honesty with which they speak. All the poems were written in free verse, which puts them outside the scope of this "formalist" anthology. Nonetheless, I include some here because they are moving and haunting. These poems are food for my spirit like no other. I recommend this book more strongly than any other book of poetry. – Editor The Hill
