SUMMER SONG by Susan Rowan Masters Grade Level: 5-8 Teaching Ideas Summer Song appeals to a wide audience of young readers, many who may be facing difficult issues themselves. Because the plot deals realistically about a fractured family and a teen's struggle for control, students can better grasp what Etta May herself finally comes to understand: while we cannot control life, we can affect parts of it. Bits of humor lighten what could be a heavy tone as it asks readers to think about family, separation, and loss. Thematic Links Friendship
Ask students to describe Etta May and Quentin's friendship. Etta May calls him her best friend. What are the qualities in Quentin that she says, "made me forget the rough edges?" Both of their mothers have left for different reasons. How might this strengthen their friendship? At first Etta May doesn't trust her neighbor Mrs. Moreles who she thinks is a snoop. How and when does her attitude change? Family
Ask students to describe the relationship between Etta May and Gent, and Etta May and her mother Claire. Ask how Etta May deals with the feelings she has for Claire, bringing in during the discussion the word "ambivalence." At what point in the story does Etta May finally gain a sense that the three of them are truly a family? How does this affect what she does next?

Teaching Ideas
The Secret Life of Hubie Hartzel is a fast-paced story about the perils of life in the fifth grade. Humor is one of the themes that helps lighten the story as Hubie deals with family, school, a class bully, and the eventual loss of the family pet.
Thematic Links
Bullying
  • Ask students to describe Marucci’s behavior toward Hubie and Frank. Then ask them to recount other ways in which an individual or a group can bully someone.
  • Help them recognize the wide range bullying can take: from teasing or leaving an individual out of a social gathering on purpose to serious verbal/physical attacks.
  • What would they do if they found themselves in with a group of kids who were bullying another student? Have them explain the statement: it takes courage to stand up to peer pressure and do what’s right.

The Secret Life of Hubie Hartzel by Susan Rowan Masters
Reviewed by Publisher's Weekly and School Library Journal
From Publisher's Weekly: In this first novel about the trials and tribulations of a fifth-grader, chronic daydreamer Hubie Hartzel has decided that "life stinks." His cat is sick, his best friend is treated better at home than Hubie is, he's the chief victim of Marucci, the local bully, and he's fallen in love with his art teacher. But Hubie fantasizes that he'll be thin, that he'll defeat Marucci, that he'll find his real parents who will treat him better and that his art teacher will love him back. Finally, when Hubie decides to take his life into his own hands, the results aren't exactly as he dreamed them, but they can sometimes come pretty close. With its likable characters and funny scenes, Masters's light and breezy saga is eminently appealing. Ages 8-12. (Mar.) From School Library Journal:

The Review
"Etta May, a self-proclaimed magnet for disaster, carries more than her share of burdens. Soon after the death of her beloved grandmother, her grandfather Gent grows too weak from emphysema to tend his cherished roses or take care of the rundown trailer where he and Etta May live. When Etta May realizes that Gent's disease is terminal, she resolves to carry out his last wish: to die in his own bed. She wages a lonely battle against doctors and, even more painfully, the absentee mother she has seen 'all of nine times.'
