W.S. Maugham
Aus dem Leben von W.S. Maugham
William Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965)

William Somerset Maugham ( Some quotations: To the lover waiting for his love, no sound is sadder than the tardy striking of the hours. It is but seldom that a man loves one and for all; it may only show that his sexual instincts are not very strong. Human sorrow is like a child born in the night who sees the sun rise and thinks that yesterday never existed. The writer must be playful and serious at the same time. When you are in love what use it is to you if all you get in return is kindness, friendship, affection ? It is Dead Sea fruit that sticks in your throat. People will sometimes forgive you the good you have done them, but seldom the harm they have done you. Death is a very dull, dreary affair, and my advice to you is to have nothing whatsoever to do with it. People ask for criticism, but they only want praise. The unfortunate thing about this world is that the good habits are much easier to give up than the bad ones. Art for art’s sake makes no more sense than gin for gin’s sake. There are two good things in life – freedom of thought and freedom of action.

"The man I am writing about is not famous. It may be that he never will be. It may be that when his life at last comes to an end he will leave no more trace of his sojourn on earth than a stone thrown into a river leaves on the surface of the water. But it may be that the way of life that he has chosen for himself and the peculiar strength and sweetness of his character may have an ever-growing influence over his fellow men so that, long after his death perhaps, it may be realized that there lived in this age a very remarkable creature."
W. Somerset Maugham, THE RAZOR'S EDGE
Many people have read
the paperback Penguin Classic edition of the The Razor's Edge that in the preface mentions a man named Guy Hauge (sometimes spelled 'Hague') that has been suggested as possibly being the model for Maugham's main character Larry Darrell. In the same paragraph as the above quote Maugham writes, "I have invented nothing. To save embarrassment to people still living I have given to the persons who play a part in this story names of my own contriving, and I have in other ways taken pains to make sure that no one should recognize them." Maugham then goes on to say, "I think my book, within its acknowledged limitations, will be a useful source of information for my friend's biographers."
The suggestion of Guy Hauge has been brought up to me on many occasions, sometimes for clarification, sometimes for accuracy, sometimes in seeking the truth, and sometimes in an effort to intimate that

Listen to your Maugham: Purpose, Method, and Contradiction
W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was a writing machine. He wrote and sold drama, novels, short stories, and essays. He began his career as a novelist, soon switched to drama, and at the age of 37 retired from writing for the stage and concentrated on the short story and novel forms. He continued writing and publishing until his death at 94. Over the course of his long literary career, Maugham developed strong opinions about the purpose and method of writing fiction which he put forth in the various introductions to his work and in autobiographical essays. A scholar as well as author, Maugham often looked to the work of his predecessors such as Checkov, Maupassant, and Poe for vindication of his own opinions. Although he often contradicted himself, his written declarations of the purpose and method of fiction (largely ignored by the critics) offer insight into the motivation for one of the most financially, if not critically, successful authors of his time.
Maugham also published two complete books of essays, a collection of his personal notes from his writer's notebook, a book on the method of his extensive art collection, and many lectures, guides, and introductions to what he considered great literature in both English and French.

W Somerset Maugham
Writer England Born 25 Jan 1874
Died 16 Dec 1965
William Somerset Maugham was born in in Paris and lived there until he was ten. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He afterwards walked the wards of St Thomas's Hospital with a view to practise in medicine, but the success of his first novel, 'Liza of Lambeth' (1897), won him over to letters. Something of his hospital experience is reflected, however, in the first of his masterpieces, 'Of Human Bondage' (1915), and with 'The Moon and Sixpence' (1919) his reputation as a novelist was assured.
His position as one of the most successful playwrights on the London stage was being consolidated simultaneously. His first play, 'A Man of Honour' (1903), was followed by a procession of successes just before and after World War I. (At one point only Bernard Shaw had more plays running at the same time in London.) His theatre career ended with 'Sheppey' (1933).
His fame as a short-story writer began with 'The Trembling of a Leaf', sub-titled 'Little Stories of the South Sea Islands', in 1921, after which he published more than ten collections.
