    In the summer
    In the long trip back,
    In the hard visit,
    In humidity,
    In failure and impatience, and
    Worn out with the living,
I drive my mother to the cemetary
    To visit the still family.
I turn right at the Bryant plot And on down the line To find our name chipped in granite. Are you cool down there In your bones, old ones? Ah, they're neglected: Weeds, vases overturned. My mother, who would not Say so, is sweating. My mother, who is A large old baby, Who has no memory to speak to. The car ticks in the heat. Last night I wrapped A damp sheet around me As if to break high fever. I rinse the vase and Fill it with water. From here, I see her lurch From the car, one hand Clutching at air. Bad doll to dress and feed, Ancient bride, see, they've gone Downstairs before you. The glare from the slabs Hurts her. The earth could open, Poor husk, my tooth and claw. The water smells like iron. I will never forget anyone. I see my mother As she is now

. . . writer. In addition to her enormously successful Under the Tuscan Sun, Bella Tuscany, and In Tuscany. Ms. Mayes is a poet who has published five books of poetry plus a textbook, The Discovery of Poetry. For almost 25 years, Ms. Mayes taught creative writing to college students.  With Swan, she adds novels to her repertoire, bringing together elements of her American homes in California, Georgia and her beloved Italy. 3:32 secs “Home.” It’s the place for which we long when we are not there, according to Frances Mayes.  For her, that place now is Tuscany, which she introduced to the broader world in memoirs including the perennial favorite, Under the Tuscan Sun . Now Ms. Mayes has written a novel about another home, her childhood one in the American South. The elements common to both the South and to Tuscany are as intriguing to Frances Mayes as what makes her two homes different. Perhaps what they have most in common is odd characters, but it’s the Land itself, more than the culture, that is defining in both places, she believes. South Georgia gave this memoirist and poet additional grist for her newest creative outlet. While she wanted to write a portrait of a place and an homage to the people she knew growing up, she also is intrigued by the idea of “will,” by secrets and by timelessness. All three play major roles in Swan , the novel she’s been wanting to write since she was a high school girl in Fitzgerald, Georgia.

FRANCES MAYES' BELLA TUSCANY brings the author's bestsellers Under the Tuscan Sun and Bella Tuscany beyond the book in a celebration of what Mayes calls the "voluptuousness of Italian life." Interviews with the personalities that have won the hearts of readers around the world and footage of the Tuscan countryside from the ground and the air will inspire viewers to experience the "sweet life" in Italy for themselves. As one of the local residents in the program notes, Mayes has "truly captured the spirit of the people, not just [the beauty of] the landscape" in the two internationally beloved books, and FRANCES MAYES' BELLA TUSCANY enchants with glorious images whose full beauty Mayes' memoirs could only hint at. This is a program for anyone who read Mayes' books and wanted more, but it is also a wonderful introduction to Cortona and the Tuscan countryside that doesn't require a familiarity with the books to enjoy. Walk the Roman pathways with Frances and her husband Ed into town to buy the makings of an evening's meal; farm the Mayes' centuries old olive grove; look out over the Etruscan stone walls that resound with the history of Cortona and get a taste of the good life in FRANCES MAYES' BELLA TUSCANY.

Reviewer: The Rebecca Review.com
“I thought I was strange to feel this way. Since I've met so many people who read Under the Tuscan Sun, I've found out that lots of people feel this way. It's complicated but feels so very easy. The warmth of the people, the human scale of the towns, the robust food, yes, but I've begun to think, too, that it's the natural connection with art, the natural exposure to beauty on a day-to-day basis.” –Frances Mayes Frances Mayes presents a sensual celebration of Tuscany with hypnotic descriptions of culinary bliss and everyday rituals on long days when she savors the sun. This is creative writing heaven! She is not only a best-selling author, widely published poet and gourmet cook; she is also a travel writer who can describe lands and culture in sensuous and evocative language. Halfway into the book, I became heady with the desire to just run away to Tuscany. I want to write like her, I want to think like her, I am intoxicated by her creativity.

Perhaps it was the chance that Mayes took buying a rundown house in a foreign country that attracted readers. Maybe it was the pace of Italian life that she described, where good, simple food and warm companionship were high priorities. Undoubtedly, her quiet, descriptive prose kept readers enthralled as her story and renovation unfolded. In her second book, "Bella Tuscany," she wrote, "I came to Italy expecting adventure.
