Right now, publishers seem more prepared to splash a fortune on buying the rights to novels by young unknowns than to expend a modest amount on a marketing campaign for a reliable mid-list author. Of course, being reliable has never guaranteed support in any field. The unpredictable maverick in sport, especially team sports, has always been the one to attract attention, the one to get the breaks, the one to be forgiven his trespasses, no matter how extreme. In reality this is down to money. To non-basketball fans there are a couple of names that most people will recognise - Michael Jordan certainly, Denis Rodman probably. Why Rodman, a player who could not even make the starting line-up in the recent Basketball play-offs? Because he is a rebel who dies his hair green. Because he is a player of personality who can excite the fans with a single move. Because he puts bums on seats.
The same applies to the obnoxious Gazza. Clubs are still prepared to gamble millions on him just in case he might provide the odd flash of genius to brighten a boring winter Saturday in Middlesboro. And the fans are also willing to take the gamble. And I guess this is part of the reason why publishers will pay for a hint of genius in a new novelist and why the reading public, guided by hype and a slew of critics determined to be on the next passing bandwagon, seem to gobble up first novels and make their writers stars. But perhaps it is also because having no track record, first novelists have yet to disappoint.

From the award-winning author of The Butcher Boy comes a new novel of extraordinary power that, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, "confirm[s] McCabe's standing as one of the most brilliant writers to ever come out of Ireland."
In The Dead School , Patrick McCabe returns to the emotionally dense landscape of small-town Ireland to explore the inner lives of two men: a headmaster and a schoolteacher, each man the product of a soul-stifling culture, each battling his own demons of loss and betrayal. Tension coilsuntil tragedy strikes a young student in their charge, and the latent despair and rage that has festered in their hearts explodes onto the page. As in The Butcher Boy , McCabe demonstrates his remarkable command of the vernacular and an uncanny ability to pinpoint the exact moment when ordinary minds take flight into madness. Equally compelling, equally heartbreaking in its impact, The Dead School has established McCabe as one of the most celebrated writers of literary fiction today.

Aside from the narrator himself, all the characters in this novel are viewed through the shifting lens of Pussy Braden's perspective. Several characters, in fact, exist only in Pussy's imagination. Aside from Pussy, which of these characters, real or imagined, are the most carefully drawn and which leave the most lasting impressions? Why?
The author has stated that in early drafts of this novel the character of Pussy Braden was conceived as a female but that as he continued writing, he "realized it wasn't about a girl at all." How is Pussy's sexual identity critical in conveying the novel's themes of identity and disassociation?
What is the view of religion expressed in Breakfast on Pluto? How does this view shape the internal conflicts of the characters and the external conflicts of their environment? Which scenes in particular support your opinion? Does Pussy Braden's irreverent attitude towards Ireland's troubles ("It's bombing night and I haven't got a thing to wear") diminish or accentuate the horror around him? Is the voice of Pussy Braden more or less effective than those in other Irish novels in its description of Ireland's turmoil? Popular music has a strong presence in Breakfast on Pluto, and the title is derived from a 1969 pop hit. Patrick McCabe, who is a practicing part-time musician, has said that "you could make the case that all art aspires to be music." Is there a sense of musicality in this novel? If so, how is it manifested?

Patrick McCabe: A Comedy of Horrors
On a Wednesday night so dark and wet it has cleared the Sligo streets of life, PW Breakfast on Pluto , out this month from Harper Collins (Forecasts, this issue, p. 55). While pausing to respectfully tip his hat to James Joyce and Carson McCullers, he arrives at the more Technicolor description of the book as "Roy Lichtenstein g s to Leitrim" evoking both the garish coloring of Breakfast on Pluto In his fiction, too, gleeful ambiguity is the name of the game. Served up in a chatty, colloquial narrative voice, his darkly satirical burlesques strut the line between comedy and horror, while his characters are equal parts lovable and chilling. In his breakthrough third novel, the Booker-nominated

Breakfast On Pluto

In The Butcher Boy , Patrick McCabe created an unforgettable protagonist and narrator, a troubled Irish boy forced to come of age too quickly at the height of the Cold War. In Breakfast On Pluto , he's crafted an equally memorable lead, though one far removed from that novel's Boy's Life -gone-wrong adventures. Unlike Butcher 's Francie Brady, Pluto 's Patrick Braden is a survivor, if only just barely. A flamboyant transvestite prostitute fathered by a Catholic priest in an Irish border town, Braden's indeterminate identity may seem too obvious a symbol of a divided Ireland's own violent identity crisis. McCabe, however, never allows this to get in the way. By turning Braden, who renames himself "Patty Pussy," into a larger-than-life but three-dimensional character, McCabe gets to have his too-obvious symbolism and his compelling novel too. Troubled by his parentage, Braden goes looking for love and seems to find it before, in great tragic-queen tradition, losing it again and again against the backdrop of flaring political tensions in the early '70s. In Breakfast On Pluto , McCabe has taken what could easily have been a stereotypical character and rendered him tremendously sympathetic and believable. Braden is a consistently funny narrator, but his alternately bitchy and moony storytelling always betrays a beautifully melancholy, fragile human beneath. Through Braden, McCabe effortlessly makes the political seem personal in a touching novel that's difficult to forget.

Deep under the influence of peyote in a strange town, three Irishmen struggle to make sense of what's happening. One has it all figured out: They're in Mexico, and the man they just killed was a corrupt generalissimo who had it coming a long time ago. His companion has other ideas. "This isn't Mexico!," he says. "This is a filthy mad world of crazy men and she-devils!" Together, they attempt to negotiate the boundaries of their shared hallucination. Readers of Butcher Boy author Patrick McCabe's latest will likely know the feeling. A collection of closely related stories organized around a single character and a variety of songs, Germs relates the bloody exploits of McCabe's near-namesake Pat McNab, a middle-aged small-town resident who has seen his dreams of pop stardom interrupted by several decades of maternal intervention. Set over the course of McNab's "postmatricide" year, Germs Germs grows repetitive in a hurry. With McNab, McCabe has created a Jim Thompson-like protagonist whose delusional thinking and decided lack of aversion to bloodletting tend to wreak havoc on everyone who crosses his path. He's a memorable creation, but he grows less interesting over the course of one pattern-following chapter after another. At times, McCabe's mean, dry prose carries the book: In a flashback, a '60s hipster falls victim to a maraca bludgeoning "in what might be described as an orgy of bloody, frenzied, alternative 'bebop' improvisation." Such moments only count for so much, however. Taken as a whole

(Roman) Kommentar:

The Booker prize nominee and Irish Times/Aer Lingus award winner, Pat Mc Cabe talks to Pat Collins about his novels and his jump into the world of screen writing.
The most common supposition concerning Pat Mc Cabe is that people expect him to be a little strange. After all, the creator of The Butcher Boy must have a dark side to him. He seems to have captured the readers' imagination and in so doing has got his personal life and the characters of his books intertwined in the public's mind in a way that few other writers have to contend with. When you actually meet him he's friendly, courteous and probably even ordinary. Only his references to Corman, Hitchcock and general horror/schlock movies give sustenance to the notion that there is, if not a 'macabre' side, at least an offbeat element to his outlook on life. Though Mc Cabe is known primarily as a writer of novels and as a playwright, he has recently been linked with television and film, most notably as a screenwriter for Neil Jordan who plans to film Mc Cabe's novel The Butcher Boy. Also he is currently working on a script for Thaddeus O' Sullivan. He does not differentiate between his writings; they are all part of the same drive that first set him on his course as a teller of stories. His rise to prominence has been slow and steady and bereft of any of the hype that can sometimes cling to a writer. His first novel Music on Clinton St came and went without much ado. His second novel Carn was much more assured but only hinted at the extraordinary talent which emerged in the 250 pages of The Butcher Boy.
