16 years, Duneden Park, Ardoyne, north Belfast, shot dead in Ardoyne on 27 March 1973, by members of the British Army's Parachute Regiment. Patrick McCabe was the second oldest in a family with six children. He attended Holy Cross Primary School, where he decided at a young age to become a Catholic priest. When he left primary school Patrick, still intend on becoming a priest, went to Cross-and-Passion School in Crossgar, Co. Down, to begin his training for the priesthood. He attended Cross-and-Passion for two years before he deciding the priesthood was not for him. He finished his schooling at St Gabriel’s Intermediate School on the Crumlin Road. Patrick left school when he was 15 years old and began work as a trainee mechanic. A sister, speaking to the Relatives for Justice in recent years, described Patrick as a music lover. He was a drummer in his own pop group, and regularly played at dances in Crossgar. She said although he decided not to become a priest he never lost his devotion to his religion. In his spare time he was always helping out at his local Community Centre. ‘Patrick’ she said ‘was a very loving brother and showed his affection for his brothers and sisters on many occasions.’ She recalled one moment that occurred on the morning of his death when he gave his young brother a big hug and told him he loved him.

Fans of that will most definitely not be disappointed with ‘Mondo’. For the uninitiated, their first experience of McCabe can produce a contrasting reaction. He tends to be the kind of writer that one either loves or loathes. I have to lay my cards on the table and admit that I love his work, and have followed the development of his highly distinctive narrative style from ‘Carn’ through ‘The Butcher Boy’ and ‘The Dead School’. These earlier works saw the stylistic foundation being laid for ‘Breakfast On Pluto’, and ‘Mondo’ is a continuation of this. In a word it is Black, with a capital B. Building also on his earlier themes of life in the rural Irish borderlands, ‘Mondo’ sees McCabe find the perfect outlet for his irony laden, prosaic observations of life in Barntrosna the fictional setting for the book.

Patrick McCabe: Breakfast on Pluto

Patrick McCabe Phildy Hackballs
Universum

“Breakfast on Pluto" January 17, 1999 Author Patrick McCabe chats about his new book, “Breakfast on Pluto,” and share some insights into the movie production of his last work, “The Butcher Boy.” Page 1 of 3 JaxCCC: Pat McCabe: Thank you, I'm happy to be here. Hello everyone. JaxCCC: Patrick congratulations on the new book! Do you think the screen writing experience on “Butcher Boy” affected your approach in developing the new book? Pat McCabe: JaxCCC no I don't. They are totally difficult disciplines. Screen writing is more of an architecture structure, whereas novels are poetry and language. JaxCCC: Patrick, Publishers Weekly compares Pussy Braden to Becketts Malone. That is some high praise, were you aware you created a character that was so empathetic? Pat McCabe: Jax, I'm not a crazy Beckett fan so it wouldn't effect me either way. If he said something, James Joyce, it might effect me. Romalove: I understand that "The Butcher Boy" was recently made into a movie, how closely did the movie follow the book, and which experience was more enjoyable for you? Writing the book or the screenplay? Pat McCabe: Romalove, I suppose its like asking which tastes better, an apple or an orange, they are both equally sweet in different ways. The novel is kinda special, and something not collaborated on, it's all your own like a family thing.
