(Rounder) In his new collection of songs, Storied Ground , McCutcheon continues his struggle on behalf of working people against oppressive economics and a dehumanizing culture. The album raises some difficult issues about folk music, and I apologize in advance for my awkwardness in trying to address them. The basic problem with Storied Ground is that there are no stories. Instead McCutcheon continues to use people and events as examples to make a point, and he often misrepresents them in the process. The opening song, for instance, "Jericho," was written on the 40th anniversary of Rosa Parks' civil disobedience. But, like the mass media, he disingenuously paints her as a regular working woman at the end of her rope who makes an impulsive, heroic decision. In fact, Parks had already become very active in the nascent civil rights movement and her sit down was a planned, heroic act of civil disobedience. The song goes on to celebrate another small rebellion - a 1937 auto workers sit down. Again, this apparently spontaneous action ignores years of organized union activity. These are simple people who suddenly and instinctively know the right thing to do. Still, when McCutcheon wants to tell a story, he can do it very well: February came cold in '37

http://www.greenmanreview.com/mccutcheon.html
John McCutcheon, Storied Ground (Rounder 1999) John McCutcheon is one of America's great traveling troubadours. For a quarter of a century, he has criss-crossed the country and circled the globe, delivering his signature brand of thoughtful, heartfelt, folk music. In that time, he has averaged about an album a year, and Storied Ground is a worthy addition to McCutcheon's canon. McCutcheon first became known as a virtuoso on the hammer dulcimer, which in the late Seventies when he started touring and recording with it, was something of an exotic instrument. He still occasionally takes one on tour, though it doesn't put in an appearance on this CD. McCutcheon does play didgeridoo on a couple of tracks here to good effect. Anyone who likes folk music at all should see a McCutcheon performance at least once. The man is a consummate performer for the whole family in fact, when he hits a town he often will play a kids' concert in the afternoon and a public show that night. He's a master at engaging kids of all ages, and bringing out the kid in every adult, with participatory songs like "I Like Peanut Butter," and a routine in which he coaxes the crowd into making sound effects that resemble a rainstorm. He is also a master story-teller who can hold a crowd of all ages in rapt attention. And he's tremendously skilled at playing the hammer dulcimer, guitar, banjo, and piano, so there's plenty of variety in his set.

(Rounder, 2001)
This recording in the Rounder Heritage collection is intended to be a cross-section of John McCutcheon's work in order to present the artist as a person worthy of legend status. As such, there's little point in reviewing each tune, since all but two have appeared on previous recordings. The real question is, does this collection truly represent John McCutcheon? There's certainly an even selection with John playing most of the instruments for which he's known acoustic and slide guitars, hammered dulcimer, autoharp, mandolin, banjo and didgeridoo, although there is no fiddle. There's also a fair representation of accompanists with internationally recognized folks like Michael Aharon on piano and organ, Pete Kennedy on guitar, John D'Earth on trumpet and Seamus Egan on Irish whistle, flutes and uilleann pipes. And given that the list of internationally known folk musicians with whom McCutcheon has played is probably longer than your arm, this is really a short list. On the other hand, when you've only got room for 17 selections, you can't have it all, and these musicians represent McCutcheon's "inner core" of accompanists. McCutcheon's subject areas are not limited to one genre, either, and several of these are represented as well. There are family-oriented songs, such as "Calling All the Children Home" (from

John McCutcheon,
Storied Ground
(Rounder, 1999)
By the time I got to John McCutcheon's newest release, Storied Ground , I wasn't expecting much. I'd waded through offerings that I couldn't connect with to save my life, barring a few exceptions, and really wasn't looking for much of a difference in this one. Boy, was I wrong. From the first afro-centric drumbeats, and on through the first song, "Jericho," which chronicles the events that made Rosa Parks a famous woman, I was drawn in like a fish on a hook. It was engaging, hard to ignore music that worked its way into my head for both the composition and the lyrics. Lyrics that prove that a song doesn't have to be all about the chords it can be about an idea. If all the facts are on the table, Storied Ground starts out as a fantastic CD and fades slowly into a good one. The songs at the beginning are much more memorable than some of the bland ones at the end. The music gets progressively simpler as the album goes on, but the quality of the lyrics, and the voice behind them, remains consistent. It is glaringly obvious that the man is passionate an activist as well as an artist. And what of that voice? McCutcheon has a rich voice that lends itself well to the genre, clear enough that you can understand his point (the words), but pleasing enough that you don't want to immediately turn it off. Sometimes emotion-filled, other times light and ironic, he's able to let you know what the song is about just by tone.

Family Tree One of the most prolific and respected children's artists, John McCutcheon has consistently produced quality children's albums (and folk albums) since the early '70s. Gonna Rise Again
John McCutcheon
Rounder
By Gary H. Wikfors
Musical fashions are absurd and fascinating. During the late ‘60s and early’70s, a pop music performer was judged as much by his message as by his medium. then, come the following decade or so, a mere hint of sociopolitical content was met with "Gimme a break, let’s boogie." Now, somewhere around 20 years after the summer of love, it is once again fashionable, and financially rewarding, to sing "We can change the world" at loud volume. such fashion swings are responsible for countless 18-month pop music careers, but they also afford a moment in the sun for the few rare performers who toil years in a musical sub-genre regardless of the vagaries of fashion. One such performer is John McCutcheon, and his latest album, Gonna Rise Again, should herald more than a moment of glory.
John McCutcheon’s background is in traditional Appalachian string-band music, as evidenced by the instruments he has chosen to master (hammered dulcimer, guitar, fiddle). However, his strong emotional ties to left-wing politics have never been for beneath the surface in his music, whether in the powerful WWI ballad "Christmas in the Trenches" on an otherwise cheery seasonal LP Winter Solstice, or his collaboration with Si Kahn on the politically motivated concept tour/album Sign of the Times. Whereas my reviewer’s pen has been quick (a little too quick at times) to skewer those "protest" singers whose motivations seem more mercenary than moral, I have found John McCutcheon’s music to be honest and straight both musically and socially. Gonna Rise Again achieves a rare balance of style and content that maintains absolute integrity on both hands.
