WIDOW'S INDEX OF APPLICANTS FOR CONFEDERATE PENSIONS LIVING IN GADSDEN COUNTY FLORIDA
The following list of the widows of Confederate veterans who applied for pensions to the State of Florida while living in Escambia County, Florida was taken from Register of Florida CSA Pension Applications transcribed by Virgil D. White. The book can be purchased from The National Historical Publishing Company, P. O. Box 539, Waynesboro, TN 38485. (Permission was granted to list these names on the Escambia Co. FLGenWEb page). The pension files can be found at the Florida State Library in Tallahasee. It should be noted that the full text of the above referenced book is online at: Florida CSA Pension Files . It is not indexed. In many cases the pension was granted to the widow of the veteran. The veteran did not have to have served in a Florida unit. Most of the southern states had a reciprocal agreement for pensions. Most applications were in the early 1900's. A B C D ... H I J K L M ... Rossi, Alice S., editor Caring and Doing for Others Social Responsibility in the Domains of Family, Work, and Community . 520 p., 38 line drawings, 84 tables. 2001 Series: (MF-SSMD) The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Series on Mental Health and Development, Studies on Successful Midlife Development Cloth $42.00sp 0-226-72872-2 Spring 2001 From all sides we hear that Americans are becoming increasingly self-absorbed and disconnected, and that our interest in social and civic responsibility is on the decline. A more encouraging profile emerges in this study of Americans at work, at home with their families, and in their communities. The book is based on a national, representative survey of more than 3,000 Americans aged 25 to 74plus in-depth interviews with adults drawn from the surveyto find out what Americans mean by social responsibility. The book explores the extent to which adults contribute time to caregiving, social support, and financial assistance to family members; the time given to volunteer work and financial contributions to various causes, charities, and organizations; and how these contributions are affected by job obligations. A major focus is on age and gender differences, which shows midlife to be a transitional time when civic activities increase as family obligations decline. All told, the study adds a hopeful new voice to the overwhelmingly negative debate about the current state of our civic and social lives.
