Famous Scots - William McGonagall (1830-1902)
Despite his reputation as the "world's worst poet" McGonagall's poems are nowadays read, quoted and enjoyed more than ever, although perhaps because they offer more amusement than insight. McGonagall's parents came from Ireland but they moved to Scotland where McGonagall was born in Edinburgh in 1830, or thereabouts (some sources give 1825). McGonagall's father was a hand-loom weaver and the family moved to Paisley, then Glasgow, before settling in Dundee. Due to lack of money, William's education lasted only eighteen months but that was enough to start him onto reading and then writing. Although he trained as a hand-loom weaver like his father he, had a brief career on the stage - as Macbeth. But, as McGonagall himself said, "The most startling incident in my life was the time I discovered myself to be a poet, which was in the year 1877." He became a well-known public figure and toured Scotland giving performances of his poetry and selling copies of his poems. The fact that his audience was more amused than impressed did not seem to perturb him. He had a brief and disappointing trip to New York in 1877 but a selection of his poems were published under the title "Poetic Gems" in 1890. His self-belief in his own brilliance as a poet was unshakeable and an unsuccessful attempt to drop in to see Queen Victoria at Balmoral left him "not in the least discouraged." He still wrote "An Ode to the Queen in her Jubilee Year." MacGonagall's poems on the "Famous Tay Whale" and the "Tay Bridge Disaster" are perhaps his most famous but he also produced a great many other poems about the people, places and events of his day. His wayward rhymes, mixed scansion and choice of subject matter perhaps justify his title of worst poet of the world. And yet he is held in great affection and a memorial plaque was erected to his memory in Greyfriar's Churchyard in Edinburgh in 1999. He would have enjoyed writing a poem about that...

Blake: A Lament, in the style of William McGonagall, Poet and Tragedian
By Chris Blenkarn
'Twas in the Autumn of the year in the fourth series of Blake's Seven
The crew of the Scorpio did resolve to leave their base at Xenon
To run away with dignity, bound for Gauda Prime
To find Roj Blake, whom they had not seen for a very long time.
O hideous Gauda Prime! Thy dreaded name fills all men with fear and dread
For it is a place where vile bounty hunters kill true rebels dead.
Across the vast and raging galaxy the ship fled on and on
The crew's hearts still were true and stalwart, and not at all woebegone.
Blake sat on the forest greensward, the trees arched high o'erhead
His hair was gray, his eye was wild, his heart grown hard, 'tis said.
Upon a fire the grim-faced leader was roasting animals sundry When a rebel bold called Arlen assayed him, for she was very hungry. Three bounty hunters came through the trees, Arlen for to slaughter She killed two, but the third shot her in the leg when he fought her. As she lay desp'rate wounded, Blake slew the man in the fray

Chris Blenkarn who also attended Sleeping Beauty, wrote this about Dundee. William McGonagall was an infamous poet of the worlds worst verse, who came from Dundee... Lines in praise of Sleeping Beauty at the Repertory Theatre of Dundee by William McGonagall, Poet and Tragedian 'Twas in the year of 1997, and on the 13 December
Which admirers of the celebrated Mr Gareth Thomas long will remember
Who had travelled afar, from north, south, east and west
Their hearts were wild with glee, I can attest. Beautiful Dundee, your actors are most sublime to be seen
They cannot be surpassed at the repertory theatre in Tay Square, I ween
They filled our minds with awe and admiration
'Ere it was time to return to the railway station. O theatre! Most elegant to be seen in that fair city
That dwells on the banks of the silvery Tay
You were packed to the ceiling in every corner, both left and right
Which was a very pleasing sight. The play by Mr Paterson of high degree
Was the fascinating tale of Sleeping Beauty Its unutterable delights, I may venture to say

  • A year after Julia Moore published her first book, another gigantic talent burst into life on the other side of the Atlantic. In 1877, William Topaz MacGonagall, weaver and would-be actor, was inspired to write poetry. I seemed to feel as it were a strange kind of feeling
stealing over me, and remained so for about five minutes. A
flame, as Lord Byron has said, seemed to kindle up my entire
frame, along with a strong desire to write poetry; and I felt so
happy, so happy, that I was inclined to dance...
He tried at first to fight the desire, but fortunately for the history of literature, he failed. It was so strong, I imagined a pen was in my right hand and
a voice crying "Write! Write!" So I said to myself,
ruminating, let me see; what shall I write? then all at once a

Some would say that Julia A. Moore (the Sweet Singer of Michigan) was the world's worst poet. I think they're probably right. But William McGonagall (1825?-1902) is pretty darned bad... From "Descriptive Jottings of London": Oh! mighty city of London! you are wonderful to see,
    And thy beauties no doubt fill the tourist's heart with glee;
But during my short stay, and while wandering there,
Mr Spurgeon was the only man I heard speaking proper
English I do declare. From "The Rattling Boy from Dublin": I'm a rattling boy from Dublin Town,
I courted a girl called Biddy Brown,
Her eyes they were as black as sloes,
She had black hair and an aquiline nose. Chorus

    Oh forsooth,
    U'll be so uncouth,
    not to know grand McGonagall,
the greatest poet of them all! He was a scholar of little regard,
who did not let his discourse retard,
spake on things of the everyday,
and gave the common man poetic say. The glory of his words enshrined,
are the fact by structure or rhyme not undermined,
he sought only to express himself to all,
the rich, the poor, short or tall. It was Spike Milligan who re-dug him up,
and brought him to us who on such things sup, allow the world to again express amazement, at McGonagall's word enslavement. That Tay bridge disaster of which he reports did so happen, and his poem follows the official report almost exacten, oft this tee-totalling poet would perform to the Scottish lad and lass, to make of more amusement they would alcoholically lace his drinking glass. No, forsooth do not cast a stone at fair Will McGonagall, he did not allow pure lack of talent to block him at all

McGonagall's Military Verse William McGonagall If Rudyard Kipling was the most notable British poet of the end of the Nineteenth Century, then William McGonagall must rate somewhere close behind him. Regarded by some - especially himself - as being an unrecognised genius, as well as Scotland's foremost poet, McGonagall wrote verse to celebrate every major event of his day, including Britain's colonial adventures. He has been described as being: 'A real genius, for he is the only truly memorable bad poet in our language.' The following collection of his military verse had been selected to inspire and entertain all those who hanker after a different, Victorian view of the world. I urge you read them and enjoy them, because they are, without doubt, some of the worst poetry you will ever see on the printed page.
