McGonagall: Gone but unforgettable

The William McGonagall plaque marks the poet's pauper's grave
The work of the man described as one of the world's worst poets has been recognised with the unveiling of a plaque at his burial place in Edinburgh. BBC Scotland's Alan Mackay reports A plaque marking McGonagall's final resting place was unveiled at Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. It was attended by the Lord Provosts of Dundee and Edinburgh, the chairman of the City of Discovery Campaign Mervyn Rolfe, McGonagall's great great grandson William and his great great great granddaughter Mary Ross. Mary Ross: A McGonagall descendent The Rev Dr Lee Rayner, of Gilfillan Church, Dundee, conducted the service with an actor dressed in period costume paying tribute to the poet - in the style of McGonagall himself. Although born in Edinburgh, McGonagall moved with his family to Dundee where he began writing. His favourite subject matter was the Tay Bridge. He waxed lyricly about its structure and penned a 60-line verse to mark its disastrous collapse during atrocious weather conditions in 1879.

McGonagall had a fondness for the Silvery Tay
William Topaz McGonagall, the world's best-known bad poet, is to be honoured by his native city of Dundee. McGonagall, who gained fame for his mutilation of meter and reckless approach to rhyme, will be remembered in a public art project commissioned by Dundee's City of Discovery Campaign 100 years after his death. The first verse of one of his most quoted works, The Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay, will be etched into the pavement which runs along the north bank of the river and is close to the bridge. Mervyn Rolfe, campaign chairman, said McGonagall, who fashioned himself the "Poet Laureate of the Tay Bridge", is one of Dundee's most famous sons. McGonagall quoted Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay!
With your numerous arches and pillars in so grand array
And your central girders, which seem to the eye

All hail McGonagall, in verse there were few worse
By Tim Harris June 24 2002 Most of us, from time to time, dream of a life other than the ordinary. The accomplished eccentric makes that dream a daily reality, and in that at least William McGonagall was a resounding success. William Topaz McGonagall was born in Edinburgh, possibly in 1825. His parents were itinerant Irish weavers, who eventually settled in Dundee, the city McGonagall is forever associated with. He received only a minimal education, and until the late 1870s he made a meagre living following his father's trade. What happened next is best expressed in McGonagall's own words: "The most startling incident in my life was the time I discovered myself to be a poet, which was in the year 1877." The startling incident produced a startling poet. McGonagall is widely regarded as the best bad poet in the English language. Given the number of self-styled bush balladeers in this country alone, that is a high honour. McGonagall's works are not simply bad. As the critic James Cameron put it, his oeuvre was "of a magical dreadfulness that reached the sublime". ");document.write("

ARTERY - WILLIAM TOPAZ MCGONAGALL
Artery will not only tell the story of this extraordinary, eccentric 19th century tragedian, but will also explore why 100 years on, there are so many McGonagall supporters engaged in a number of activities devoted to keeping the singular spirit of his life and art alive. Although McGonagall only began his writings at the age of 52, the poems and his ranting delivery of them, marked him out for a lifetime of ridicule and poverty. Nevertheless his unshakeable self-belief saw him through, along with a zealous devotion to Queen Victoria - whom he continually pestered, as he believed himself to the rightful Poet Laureate in place of Lord Tennyson. (ENDS) William Topaz McGonagall is produced for Scottish TV by Neon Productions. For further information please contact Robert Noakes (Neon Producer) on 0141 429 6366 or email: mail@go2neon.com

The Worst Poem of All Time:
William Topaz McGonagall's " The Tay Bridge Disaster
Dateline: 5/4/99 William Topaz McGonagall. The very name reeks of poetry, and poet he was. Born in 1830 in Dundee, where he is still remembered as "Dundee's most famous nobody" (does so rhyme!), McGonagall died in 1902 in Edinburgh (where he is also claimed Native Son). His unparalleled awkward rhythms and dud rhymes were perfectly matched by his subject matter: spectacular train wrecks and the mountains of Greenland. We invite you to partake in what we consider the absolute freefall of his bottomless barrel, best savored when read aloud with the audience joining in on the fateful chorus. Then see if you can match McGonagall in our Worst Poem Ever Billboard .
