It was in Maybole that the parents of Robert Burns met, courted and married and therefore the old town can claim a connection with him. Much has been written about his birthplace at Alloway, his father, William Burnes, originally from Kircardineshire (Clockenhill in the Mearns district) and his life from birth at Alloway to death in Dumfries but little has been mentioned about his connections with the old Capital of Carrick. Burns' mother lived in Maybole for most of her unmarried life and one of his greatest schoolboy friends, William Niven, lived in Maybole where Burns often visited him From the chapter on Robert Burns' Association with Maybole in the book Maybole, Carrick's Capital by James T. The Wreck of the Titanic
While on her way to America in April 1912
by William McGonagall, Poet and Tragedian
O beautiful ship Titanic
Of the White Star Line,
Your tragic tale shall be remembered
For a very long time.
Twas in the Month of April,
on the Fourteenth day,
That a disaster happened
Which took more than fifteen hundred lives away.
They were heading t'wards Americ's shore
In the middle of the night,
When the lookout spied an iceberg, Which gave him quite a fright. They turned the wheel hard to Port, And then again to Starboard, But they hit the iceberg anyway. The hull was rent like cardboard. They tried to make the passengers Get into the lifeboats, But they said that it was too cold, To be outside without their coats. But Mr J Bruce Ismay of the White Star Line, Persuaded them, because He got into a lifeboat, To show how safe it was. And Mr Guggenheim was there, With his valet by his side. They both wore Evening Dress, For to drown while badly dressed they could not abide. They tried to make Mrs Strauss, Get into a lifeboat, But she wouldn't leave her husband.

88. Great Scotsmen - William Shields

http://www.firstfoot.com/Great Scot/shield.htm
Home About Contact Search ... Knickerbocker Politician WILLIAM SHIELD (1748-1829, Composer) William Shield is something of an oddity in our collection of "Great Scots" in that, being born and raised in Gateshead, Northumberland, he is not Scottish at all, even although there is indeed a popular saying that "Geordies are just Scotsmen with their brains kicked in." And, Northumberland was once part of Scotland, but let's not get into that right now. The simple, inescapable truth is, William Shield was an Englishman. So what is he doing here? Well, FirstFoot believes in giving credit where credit's due, and it's fair to say that William Shield has never previously received his due share of that from the Scots, for providing what has to be one of the biggest contributions to Scottish culture ever made by an outsider. We're here to put that right.

William Topaz McGonagall
Dundee's most famous poet came up in conversation at work today. I am sure no-one can fail to be moved by the words of this immortal bard.
Here's what he has to say about Shakespeare , for instance:
In his beautiful play "As You Like It", one passage is very fine.
Just for instance in the forest of Arden, the language is sublime
where Orlando speaks of his Rosilind, most lovely and divine;
and no other poet I am sure has written anything more fine.

Blethers is a Scots word that, when used as an exclamation, means something like "I don't believe a word you're saying". As a verb, it means "to chat" - usually about everything and nothing. comments@blethers.com Stuart Mudie? I live in Paris, but I'm actually more of a hispanophile than a francophile, and I lived in Barcelona for six years before coming to France. I'm Scottish.

MSP pays tribute to McGonagall
Shona Robison MSP has today paid tribute to the ‘World’s worst Poet’ William McGonagall by laying down a motion to mark the 100 th anniversary of his death in the Scottish Parliament. Commenting Ms Robison said: “Love him or loathe him, there is no doubt that William McGonagall had a great passion for poetry and his adopted city of Dundee. His passion for poetry has been recognised by the hundreds of websites and appreciation societies, which have sprung up to mark the man’s lack of poetic talent. It is fitting that there will be a pavement walkway dedicated to him in Dundee to encourage even more people to take an interest in the life and work of this quite extraordinary character.” ENDS Motion: William Topaz McGonagall That Parliament pays tribute to the life and work of the William Topaz McGonagall known as the ‘World’s Worst Poet’ on the anniversary of his death 100 years ago; recognises that despite his lack of poetic talent he had a great passion for poetry and for his adopted city of Dundee; hopes that public interest in his life and work will increase in this important year and that love or loathe his poetry, he is given due recognition as one of the great Scottish eccentrics of the last century.
