From Booklist , May 15, 1994
In her first collection since Shades (1988), McHugh brings poems from four previous volumes together with a significant amount of new work. In a brief introduction, she writes that to be a writer with a reader "is rather like being, oneself, of two minds, at every turn: hinge and sign." Not only are... Read more

Reams of Grey Matter:
Poet Heather McHugh and MCW Fellow Darin Ciccotelli Reflect on McHugh's Workshop by Heather McHugh
Speaking of which, you’ll miss the students, miss the County Line, and miss the hokey Broken Spoke; miss the plainclothesmen in SUVs who so conspicuously line the nearby streets when our nation’s First Lady comes home for a break from the awful oval offices of her Federal sentence…You’ll miss her sisters, the Texas misses, in their little heels and halters, jewels and jackets, worlds apart from the Downeast lumberjills you’re used to. And the hills for which God fashioned, it seems, only two kinds of tree, an oak whose adjective is tautological, and a cedar whose objective is allergiacal. You’ll miss them all. A tip of your ten-gallon hat to Hester and Jim, the mom and pop of the writers’ own mom-and-popperation, and you’re off, in the end, with a start, for parts unknown, from parts that seem (O East Dean Keeton!) now already always known by heart. Ed note: The old machine has been traded in on a new software-driven digital printer/copier. In lieu of flowers, former visiting professors may make charitable donations to a paper recycling plant of their choice.

Speaking to students at Festival 2000
Partly you become a poet because you can’t bear that things are unspeakable.
HEATHER McHUGH loves words right down to their roots. This reverence for language is sharpened by an irreverence toward all forms of posturing and self-importance, until in her hands word-play can be as dazzling and cutting as swordplay. The Guggenheim Fellowship winner’s five volumes of poetry include The Father of the Predicaments (1999) and the National Book Award finalist, . She is also the author of a collection of essays Broken English: Poetry and Partiality and is the translator of poetry by Jean Follain, Paul Celan, and Blaga Dimitrova. Heather McHugh teaches as a core faculty member in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, and as Milliman Writer-in-Residence at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1999, she was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. "What He Thought" "With Due Respect to Thor" General Festival Information

36. "Of The Woe That Swallows Hue": Poem By Heather McHugh
His kind never spills itself, except inside another, a receptacle. HeatherMcHugh. Originally published in the April/ May 1998 issue of Boston Review
http://bostonreview.mit.edu/BR23.2/mchugh.html
Of the Woe That Swallows Hue Among men, my dimensions
bear repeating, overbearing. Waddle
of wrapper and ripped bathrobe, the leaks in luggage
(wailings for a sucker! seekings for a sleep!) I've
been so woo'd I'm wont to overflow. My kind cannot
(o lightning poetry! o fire without a smoke!)-but just spilled
over, mere material, from being big. Among the many, lovers knew
few finer woes if any, not one man in twenty
knew a shitsmear from a bleed. What did I want? Was not
his mast of membership an outing admirable, surely I remember it?
His idea of a hell a hole, of heaven a heave-ho. Relieved of the gist of the chemical well (connubial glimmers that started as wit, then sharpened into sparkles with contaminating time) he went off with his bowsprit quite inclined to sweeter swims, and farther arts: I hear he plays transparent passages today, the frigate as progenitor. Among his women, mentions rear berating. Swapper of saddles, tripper of half-troubles, seeker of sugars, he's hued (and cried) so often he's a tidy spectacle. More power

37. "Arm And Pec (the 2 Adillos)": Poem By Heather McHugh
It's a low idea that turns itself into a skull, meaning to last. heather mchugh.Originally published in the April/ May 1998 issue of Boston Review
http://bostonreview.mit.edu/BR23.2/mchugh2.html
Arm and Pec (the 2 adillos)
Mine was just
a little sin (the iridescent fast
kind of conception). Yours
was large and armored.
Take that eighteen-wheeler oh a glancing
mile or two away-that thing
was tiny when compared
to your awareness,
which (foretelling some unpleasant wake
from deep inside its nugget of medulla) took a portion of all time to call its own, to roll into an utterly invulnerable tumble-off the whole damn human highway-past the dashers, fast becoming soft, where represents become repasts- to help you circle slow and sure toward your deserted future. It's a low idea that turns itself into a skull, meaning to last. Gin Cove
Heather McHugh Our grounds are knuckles, needles, degradable
ideograms. Granite is
lichened to
gold graduations; but gold beyond degree has sunk
to new September lows, sent stripes across
a hundred trunks for one
hour only, codes to deepest moss.
Out in the open, some deciduousness does
brisk business in manifold
crosshatch. Were you to be drawn
past forest to the shore, you'd read long volumes in the cliff's descent: through nine horizons (ages of pebble, ages of shale) this lean subversive root has struck a lyric, corkscrewed vertical. The beach is one big wedge. It makes its hard point underwater, and keeps its uplands fluted (evidence of decades spent in failing at a dune). Upon this higher composition, skeins of black egg-sac and olive tatter twist their best successions of remark. The beach has lured into its sandhold something hacked-off, root-like, ten feet wide, and tipped it over, and begun to swallow it: half of the muscular tangle protrudes above the fluent strand. Such countlessness is script; unfathomable, and exact.
