Mission Child
A review by Lisa DuMond
Advertisement document.write(''); Maureen F. McHugh is one of those rarest of things: a genuinely important author. Everything she writes is important. Why? Because McHugh never takes the easy way out; she tackles tough subject matter and she does it brilliantly. In Nekropolis she tackles the touchy subject of life in a fundamentalist theocracy. Gender bias, genetic bias, and ancient traditions combine for a society that leaves little room for personal preference, and no chance of forgiveness. Hariba, at the young age of 26, has seen her life and future shattered by her brother's illegal actions. Her lesser-of-two-evils choice is to be "jessed" to submit docilely to a form of slavery that will comprise the rest of her life. As a jessed menial she is at the lowest level of society; equal only to the bio-engineered

A review by Greg L. Johnson
Advertisement document.write(''); This last August, on a panel at Worldcon discussing literary hard science fiction, Maureen F. McHugh stated that she wasn't quite sure what she was doing on a hard SF panel. "I don't write hard science fiction," she proclaimed. "My SF is soft, soft, soft." Well, whether you label it "soft science fiction" or "humanist science fiction," the fact is that McHugh's literary skills and gift for characterization make her books, at their best, every bit as engrossing as the latest galaxy-roaming epic. McHugh is not concerned with speculating in cutting-edge physics. Her interests lie in exploring history and the inner space of the human psyche, and in Mission Child , she puts her interests and talents to their best use yet.

Joan Didion Joan Didion is an essayest and novelist with a rather cool, minimalist style. I happen to really like her collection of essays, THE WHITE ALBUM (Simon and Schuster), which has just recently been reissued, and her novel, THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER (Simon and Schuster). She is obsessed with the notion of narrativeor rather, the lack of narrative orderin our everyday lives. Her work is curiously dispassionate and yet intensely personal. She writes about disasters, the possibility of disaster, and the mindset of those who live with both affluence and disaster. Granted, she is not to every taste. Back to Grammar. Return to Contents. 18. The Evil Stepmother
An essay by maureen F. mchugh on her experience with her step son.
http://my.en.com/~mcq/stepmother.html
The Evil Stepmother My nine-year-old stepson Adam and I were coming home from Kung Fu. "Maureen," Adam saidhe calls me 'Maureen' because he was seven when Bob and I got married and that was what he had called me before. "Maureen," Adam said, "are we going to have a Christmas tree?"
"Yeah," I said, "of course." After thinking a moment. "Adam, why didn't you think we were going to have a Christmas tree?"
"Because of the new house," he said, rather matter-of-fact. "I thought you might not let us."
It is strange to find that you have become the kind of person who might ban Christmas Trees.
We joke about me being the evil stepmother. In fact, the joke is that I am the Nazi Evil Stepmother From Hell. It dispels tension to say it out loud. Actually, Adam and I do pretty good together. But the truth is that all stepmothers are evil. It is the nature of the relationship. It is, as far as I can tell, an unavoidable fact of step relationships.
We enter into all major relationships with no real clue of where we are going; marriage, birth, friendship. We carry maps we believe are true; our parent's relationship, what it says in the baby book, the landscape of our own childhood. These maps are approximate at best, dangerously misleading at worst.
Dysfunctional families breed dysfunctional families. Abuse is handed down from generation to generation. That it's all the stuff of 12 Step programs and talk shows doesn't make it any less true or any less profound.

Interview: Maureen F. McHugh
By Pat Stansberry
M aureen F. McHugh often delves into the world of the outsider, from society, from politics, even gender. She has published four novels and numerous short stories. Her first novel, China Mountain Zhang won the James Tiptree Award, the Locus Best First Novel Award, and a Lambda Award, and was nominated for a Hugo and a Nebula. "The Lincoln Train" won a Hugo for best short story in 1996. Her latest novel, Nekropolis will be published in trade paperback in Nov. 2002. The New York Times Book Review observes that "McHugh writes science fiction from the inside out, with the focus on character." Karen Joy Fowler writes, "I know of no writer who is more deft, more dazzling, or more dangerous to read. You pick up one of Maureen McHugh's books and whole days pass before you remember to put it down again." She has been compared to Ursula K. Le Guin. This discussion took place at Café Tandoor in Cleveland, in the torpid afterglow of Jhinga Biryani, lightly spiced rice and shrimp, Baigan Bharta, rich and pungent roasted eggplant, Palak Raita, a spinach and yogurt condiment that cools the palate, and the wondrous Indian bread naan. "Food is the center of my existence," says McHugh. Pat Stansberry: When writers talk about writing, it's fun to start with our embarrassing youths. Do you remember your earliest speculative fiction story?
