    Interview: Maureen F. McHugh
    By Pat Stansberry
M aureen F. McHugh often delves into the world of the outsider, from society, from politics, even gender. She has published four novels and numerous short stories. Her first novel, China Mountain Zhang won the James Tiptree Award, the Locus Best First Novel Award, and a Lambda Award, and was nominated for a Hugo and a Nebula. "The Lincoln Train" won a Hugo for best short story in 1996. Her latest novel, Nekropolis will be published in trade paperback in Nov. 2002. The New York Times Book Review observes that "McHugh writes science fiction from the inside out, with the focus on character." Karen Joy Fowler writes, "I know of no writer who is more deft, more dazzling, or more dangerous to read. You pick up one of Maureen McHugh's books and whole days pass before you remember to put it down again." She has been compared to Ursula K. Le Guin. This discussion took place at Café Tandoor in Cleveland, in the torpid afterglow of Jhinga Biryani, lightly spiced rice and shrimp, Baigan Bharta, rich and pungent roasted eggplant, Palak Raita, a spinach and yogurt condiment that cools the palate, and the wondrous Indian bread naan. "Food is the center of my existence," says McHugh. Pat Stansberry: When writers talk about writing, it's fun to start with our embarrassing youths. Do you remember your earliest speculative fiction story?

    ABC Zhang

    Science Fiction Ich bin arbeitslos.
Ironie.
Aber immer noch besser als Rafael Luis.

makeover by Maureen F. McHugh It hadn't always been a perfect marriage, but it was a good one. He could be Oblivious. She could be Bitchy. Even after a thousand years, some things remained the same. The tactics change, but it's all one battle. For the past six decades, Isabelle had had gray eyes and high arching eyebrows, like her husband's ex-wife. Kaylen had only been married to the ex for eight years, but it was when he was only double digits in age. Those things shape a plastic brain. The mind grows less pliable after the first hundred years. Of course, Kaylen didn't know they were his ex-wife's eyes and eyebrows, but Isabelle could tell that it unsettled him. That was the point. She had learned that too much comfort was bad, and too much change was equally bad. So she had changed things, just enough to keep them from getting static. Moved him from Ohio to Australia, and then to Hong Kong for part of each year. And then Antarctica, which despite the dome was really like Australia. And after that to Dacca and all over. She'd been angry before in the marriage, she simmered for centuries sometimes. But still whenever he traveled she missed him, and she felt him in her bed like a phantom limb.

"I grew up in a small town in Ohio named Loveland," says Maureen McHugh, author of Mission Child. "We didn't have a library, just a bookmobile, and I remember sitting on the floor looking at books. When I was around ten, the Methodist Church let the county library system use their basement which made going to the library a double thrill, not only for the books but for the vague thrill of being a Catholic girl in the basement of another church." McHugh went to college at Ohio University, then received her master's degree in English Literature from New York University. She taught as a part time college instructor for a few years, did temporary office work, and "basically bummed around New York City a lot." Then she moved to Shijiazhuang, China. "I went to graduate school in New York because I felt I needed life experience to be a good writer," McHugh explains. "I went to China because I thought it would change me, and maybe make me a better writer. It certainly did change me. I lived and taught school at a teacher's college in the city of Shijiazhuang. Shijiazhuang has the dubious distinction of being a fairly new city in a country that is seven thousand years old. It grew up at a place where two railroads crossed. Everywhere else you go in China has history. Shijiazhuang had textile mills and a factory that made television tubes. It was the Toledo of China." A year later she came home and wrote China Mountain Zhang
