Here's my one small step to correct that: 1) She became famous in the 70s for some great books that occupied a territory somewhere between Ursula K. LeGuin's rational examinations of gender and Samuel Delany's envisionings of alternative sexuality and mental states. "The Exile Waiting" is a great tale of outsiders in a corrupt metropolis, eeking out a living through their forbidden telepathic powers. "Dreamsnake" is an award winning book about a female healer traveling through a desert, semi-feudal world,who needs her fragile alien snake to perform her life-saving craft. 2) McIntyre is one of the best at probing the concept of beings interconnected with their machinery and computers directly through their nervous systems. Her society is not so much cybernetic as it is fully integrated with electronic servers, robots, and limited consciousnesses. She mixes science and emotional empathy with surprising grace and ease.

Vonda N. McIntyre. This interview appeared in the Winter 1997 issue of ECLECTIC LITERARY FORUM Her recently published novel, STAR WARS: THE CRYSTAL STAR (Bantam Spectra) continues the adventures of George Lucas' Star Wars characters Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. SF Reviews by Aaron M. Renn By Author By Title By Date Reviewed The Moon and the Sun by Vonda N. McIntyre ( buy Conclusion: Recommended The book won the 1997 Nebula Award for best novel. After reading it, I can only scratch my head as to how it even got nominated. This is clearly NOT science fiction. It's not even fantasy. It's not - as several blurbs suggest - an alternate history (unless you consider Pride and Prejudice an alternate history too). Instead, it's a historical romance novel with a few fanciful elements thrown in. As such, it deserves to be shelved in the romance section along with such works as Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. If that's a genre you like, then you will love this book. If not, you should probably give The Moon and the Sun a pass. The story takes place in the court of Louis XIV of France in the late 17th century. The protagonist - Marie-Joseph - is a young woman who left a convent prior to taking the vows in order to become a lady in waiting to the daughter of a powerful duke. Her brother Yves is a Jesuit priest and scientist commissioned by the king to capture a sea monster, one of the creatures who are rumored to possess the power of immortality. The story opens with Yves returning to Paris with his sea monster in tow. (This is just about the sum total of all the fantasy in the book). Unfortunately, the story rapidly grinds to a halt as McIntyre spends about 150 pages developing her characters and trying to convince us how boring and banal life among the courtiers at Versailles is. Unfortunately, she manages to bore the reader in the process. If you make it through this, you'll be rewarded with a somewhat predictable but extremely enchanting and entertaining love story. The first 200 page of the book I was hard pressed to keep reading. The last 250 I could not put it down.

Dreamsnake by Vonda N. McIntyre Something that I enjoy greatly, but is, unfortunately, very rare, is science fiction that isn't self-conscious about it. I think authors are still a bit defiant about writing science fiction, and feel that it's something of an act of rebellion. As a result, one frequently feels that the author is saying something like :"I'll show them ! I'll give them aliens and robots and mysterious machines until they start popping out of their nostrils !" ... anyway, "Dreamsnake" isn't at all like that ... The setting is another post-apocalyptic world where, against all probability, mankind has learnt its lesson and has settled down in peace. The level of technology varies a great deal, with farming communities interspersed with high-tech labs. The main character is a young female doctor who is going around doing good. The only problem, seen from her patients' perspective, is that she, along with every other doctor, administers her injections using live snakes. This is one of the most interesting examples of how mankind has learnt how to recreate its past technology using natural techniques. Anyway, this doctor wanders around, saving lives, thrwarting evil and generally kicking posterior. Despite my mocking tone, this book does in fact deserve the Hugo and the Nebula that it received. The descriptions, both of individuals and of societies , are excellent, somewhat reminiscent of Anne McAffery at her very best or of Ursula K. Le Guin. The characters are not too idealized or reminiscent of cliches. For example, one of them is a young prince who, having failed to master hormonal control (which is a commonly held skill in this society) accidently got his girl-friend pregnant. Technology is held to a minimum, and although this won't appeal to some, it makes a nice change from the norm. The idea that mankind will live at peace with nature and won't strive to recreate a lost technocracy strikes me as being unduly optimistic, but given that premise, the society that results is very persuasive.
