"Probably best known for the fantasy novels The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown , Robin McKinley also has a gift for the skillful retelling of folktales. Although her work appeals to both adult and young adult readers, her themes, as in Deerskin , can occasionally be disturbing. This is not the case in Spindle's End, which is a delightfully light, though never superficial, reimagining of Sleeping Beauty. "In a land where magic is as thick as dust and about as much of a nuisance, the Queen announces she is about to give birth. To make sure magic doesn't interfere with proceedings, no fewer than 21 fairies are invited to be godmothers at the princess's public Naming Day. Katriona, an apprentice fairy from the rural village of Foggy Bottom, is in the crowd during the ceremony, and witnesses the appearancein a clap of thunderof the wicked fairy, Pernicia, who delivers a curse: one day before her 21st birthday, the princess will prick her finger on a spindle, fall into a poisoned sleep, and die. Katriona flees to Foggy Bottom with the infant princess in order to save her. "For the next 20 years, the princess, known now as Rosie, grows up with Katriona. In describing daily life in the villagethe spells, the animals, the ups and downs of human romanceMcKinley gives us pitch-perfect dialogue, hard-headed whimsy, and a cast of vital human and animal characters. The plot is stirring and deft, and always overlain with the author's sharp-eyed wisdom. The ending is a happy onemostly. McKinley understands that nothing ever turns out exactly as hoped, and that a little sorrow makes life's triumphs that much sweeter." Luc Duplessis

In Her Own Words
I was an only child and my father was in the Navy. We moved every year or two - California, Japan, upstate New York, New England. I early found the world of books much more satisfactory than the unstable so-called real world. I can't remember the first time I read Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess, but this particular story, about a little girl all alone in a strange land who told stories so wonderful that she believed them herself, fascination me. I never quite lived up to Sara Crewe's standard, but I tried awfully hard.
Writing has always been the other side of reading for me; it never occurred to me not to make up stories. Once I got old enough to realize that authorship existed as a thing one might aspire to, I knew it was for me. I even majored in English literature in college, a good indication of my fine bold disdain for anything so trivial as earning a living; I was going to be a writer, like Dickens and Hardy and George Eliot. And Kipling and H. Rider Haggard and J.R.R. Tolkien. I was, however, going to tell breathtaking stories about girls who had adventures. I was tired of the boys always getting the best parts in the best books. What with reading and making up my own stories, I spent most of my life in my head; about the only irresistible attraction reality had for me was in the shape of horses and riding. And I liked traveling. Perhaps because of my childhood, staying in one place for very long just seemed to me like a waste of opportunity.

Rose Daughter
by Robin McKinley
Robin McKinley has been my favorite fantasy author since I first read The Blue Sword as a teenager, and it has been five years since her last novel appeared, so I was delighted to find a new novel of hers. Rose Daughter is another retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast. The plot is very similar to that of her lovely first novel, Beauty , but she has stuffed a very different story into it. Beauty is, of course, the youngest daughter of a wealthy widower. The eldest daughter, Lionheart, is daring and loves horses; the middle daughter, Jeweltongue, is clever and loves wordplay; Beauty is shy, and loves gardening, and she loves roses above all other growing things. When her father's business fails, they are left with nothing but a small country house named Rose Cottage, so small and distant that even the creditors don't want it. The sisters are happy in the new life they make for themselves at Rose Cottage, despite rumors of a mysterious curse; but then their father takes refuge from a blizzard in an enchanted palace, and when he takes a rose from the breakfast table to bring to Beauty, the Beast demands his youngest daughter in return. As I said, McKinley has written this plot before, but this version is calmer and more thoughtful, with a somewhat Gothic atmosphere. The pace is generally leisurely, but the writing has such charm that I was never less than completely absorbed in the story. She writes with contagious affection for her characters and their surroundings. Things animal, vegetable, and mineral, both magical and mundane, are so animate that they are nearly characters; the people are so prosaic in the midst of all that wonder that they seem real enough to wander in from the next room and offer you tea or recite bad poetry at you.

Robin McKinley,
Rose Daughter
(Ace, 1998)
Robin McKinley had the honor of guiding me on my first foray into the magical world of fantasy fiction. I picked up a copy of The Hero and the Crown at a book fair in the second grade; that much-read and much-loved book holds a position of tattered importance on my nightstand, along with other favorites found through the years. While Rose Daughter is a beautiful retelling of Beauty and the Beast , it didn't grip me with the same fever that McKinley's other novels have. Rose Daughter is actually McKinley's second retelling of the Beauty fairy-tale. The first novel, Beauty , received critical acclaim almost twenty years ago. The second time around, McKinley focuses more on the symbolic imagery central to the original fairy-tale the rose. This novel still keeps Beauty and the Beast as central characters, but it also introduces us to Beauty's sisters, Jeweltongue and Lionheart, as their roles in this story are vital to the choice that Beauty must ultimately make. McKinley uses the basic skeleton of the original tale; her treatment differs by delving into the darker realms of nightmare and curses. When Beauty's mother dies, her father banishes the use of magic in the household. His subsequent bankruptcy forces the three daughters to take stock of their possessions and adapt to a lesser lifestyle. Beauty stumbles across a will in her father's correspondence which provides the family with a small cottage, Rose Cottage, in the country. The three sisters discover their own particular talents, which are nourished by their move to the country. As a result, the events of the original tale are set into motion, with the novel progressing rather predictably from this point.

Robin McKinley, Deerskin (Ace, 1993) In Deerskin , Robin McKinley delves into a dark tale of royal incest, derived from Frenchman Charles Perrault's "Donkeyskin". At its simplest, this oft-neglected, disturbing tale revolves around a deathbed promise extracted from a King by his Queen, to marry no woman not at least her equal. The Queen may have had good intentions, or maysimply have been petty; either way, the result is inevitably the same: the King dutifully promises, remains unmarried for a number of years, then notices the striking resemblance of his daughter to her late mother. The King proclaims his intention to marry the Princess, to her dismay. If the Princess is lucky, she is able to escape this incestuous prison, to hide behind the anonymity offered by the titular, otherwordly Donkeyskin until time and her resilience bring about healing. It is only upon his daughter's seventeenth birthday ball that the King realizes that Lissar's beauty surpasses even that of her mother's, and he declares to all that he will marry his daughter. Horrified, Lissar refuses, and bars herself and Ash in their room. Lissar's childhood comes to a violent conclusion, as her overcome father destroys her innocence, nearly killing both young woman and dog in the process. Lissar and Ash flee far from home and seek refuge in solitude, anonymity and a lack of memory. During this time, the Moonwoman, whom Lissar calls The Lady, visits the wounded woman, granting her the gift of time (four years, in the passage of hours), her dress of deerskin, and an altered appearance, that she might walk among others without fear of discovery. Bolstered by this assistance and driven by her own determination, Lissar makes her way back into the world of people, come the next spring. Her path brings her to Ossin's kingdom, where she is taken on as a dog trainer in the royal house.

Robin McKinley and Peter Dickinson, Water: Tales of Elemental Spirits (Putnam, 2002) Like Emma Bull and Will Shetterly, Robin McKinley and Peter Dickinson are one of the best husband and wife writing couples that one could have the pleasure to encounter. Each is an accomplished writer, so one would expect a collection of tales by them would be a sterling affair, eh? Well, it is sort of. (Now, if you are a young fan of either author, please read me review before getting upset. I, for the most part, love what both of these authors have written. I adore her Outlaws of Sherwood , and his trilogy, The Changes , is a wonderful quest adventure. I even like his somewhat silly undertaking, Time and the Clockmice . That doesn't mean I like everything that they've done! If you're still upset, e-mail me and we'll discuss this review over an oversized mug of cocoa complete with marshmallows.) But before I discuss why this disappoints me slightly, let me tell you what's in it. There are but six tales here. McKinley lets the heart reign in all three of her contributions: one young woman braves an ancient curse and falls in love with 'The Sea-King's Son' despite dire warnings not to do so; another strong female character discovers her own powerful but quiet kind of magic to defeat a giant, wildly destructive 'Water Horse;' and a third heroine dreams of Damar, the setting of McKinley's The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown , then finds a way to travel there, escaping her own cursed reality, in 'A Pool in the Desert.' In Dickinson's tales, which are darker in tone but not as well-written, a 'Mermaid Song' helps an seriously abused child to escape her violent father; a severely injured ferryman, caught in a struggle between factions of gods, battles an immense 'Sea Serpent'; and a mer-princess catches they eye of an immortal while helping to save human lovers from drowning at the hands of a 'Kraken' from the deeps.
