introduction pictures animations writings ... Reviews 1994 Duncan McLean Duncan Mclean; Forward to catalogue for Scottish Gallery Show April 1994 Before very long, though, it became clear that Robbie wasn't content to be a member of somebody?else's club. Even less was he content to read somebody else's comic. Within a matter of weeks, as I remember it, he was selling his own photocopied publication at play times and dinner breaks. It was called Comet, and contained stories about secret agents, footballers and public schools.... Now, in his most recent work, Robbie has moved on again. There are still occasional scenes of life in kitchens and cafes, living rooms and lounge bars, but more than ever before there is a large amount of outdoor work: paintings where people are viewed in a wider context. We don't just see folk at their work benches or in their beds now; we see them leave their houses, capering down country roads, standing by their ploughed parks, considering the trees and the water and the hills around them. The stories bursting to get out of these pictures are more complex and funnier and sadder than ever before. Maybe this deepening and broadening of Robbie's vision has something to do with him moving back to the North-East of Scotland after a long time away.

North Park Collegiate and Vocational Institute Norman McLean Duncan: Enricher
No writer is flawless, but Norman Duncan, who grew up in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, came quite close to perfection in some of his writings. He was fascinated with the capability of language to convey an infinite variety of thoughts and feelings. This fascination, combined with his brilliant mind, delivered amazing insights into (what might appear to be) two vastly different worlds: Canada's rough-but-trustworthy fishing province of Newfoundland, and New York's dank-yet-enlightened Syrian colony. His distinct style, a sort of "stage presence" on paper, linked the two cultures and probed the human psyche through his nationally-famous short stories.
After a decade of childhood in Brantford, Duncan and his family moved to Mitchell, Ontario, where he started a Boys' Debate Club. Within this club, he gained the oratory training reflected in the "rhetorical flourishes that characterize his stories," especially in his earlier works. After completing high school in Mitchell, and spending a few years at the University of Toronto, he moved to New York, a North American literature hotspot. Having much experience in journalism throughout his school career, he was soon writing for the New York Evening Post, and during this time, he discovered, and fell in love with, the city's Syrian quarter.

Interview with James Kelman, Irvine Welsh and duncan mclean. From the Boston Phoenix.

    Scotched
These three men have fought to overcome cultural stereotypes and reclaim their literary tradition first as underground writers and now, with the success of Trainspotting , as bestselling authors. But along with all the celebrity comes a lot of senseless hype. On a recent visit to Boston, the `Great Scots' say they've had enough.
    by Chris Wright
"They wanted me to tour America last year when Trainspotting came out, but I couldn't be bothered," says Irvine Welsh wearily, contemplating the portobello-mushroom sandwich before him. "I couldn't be bothered with this one either. I'm kind of sick of it, but . . . " But Welsh is here nonetheless, in Boston, at the Audubon Circle restaurant on Beacon Street touring. Along with fellow Scottish authors James Kelman and Duncan McLean, Welsh makes up one-third of the so-called "Great Scots" trio visiting five cities in the US at the behest of their publisher, W.W. Norton. Welsh's apathy, though, is infinitely preferable to what I'd been getting minutes earlier. Ordering from the menu, I'd noticed that Welsh was looking at me not just looking at me, but looking at me. Was he thinking about hitting me? Irvine Welsh has a shaven head, a crinkly line of a mouth, and a pair of small, watery eyes that seem to peer out of the center of a bulbous, intensely serious face. He looks hard.
