67. Duncan McLean Text
HOUSEWARMING. by duncan mclean. Canny Man spent the morning collecting inthe corner of his eye. That is cold, he said. 2000©duncan mclean.
http://freespace.virgin.net/iain.irving/Duncan McLean text.html
HOUSEWARMING by Duncan McLean Canny Man spent the morning collecting driftwood for the stove, and the afternoon making three big pots of chilli con carne. As they were having their final simmer, he wrote out labels in red marker pen and taped them to the potlids. The first label said HOT, the second label said VERY HOT, and the third label said DANGER! DO NOT EAT THIS CHILLI!
That done, Canny Man turned all the lights on, closed the door behind him, and walked round the shore to the village. It was getting dark by this time, but the streetlamp lit up the noticeboard outside the post office, and the redmarker poster he'd pinned there a week before: COME TO CANNY'S HOOSE!
"HOUSEWARMING", SATURDAY 11th,
7pm to whenever.
ALL WELCOME! (Except Alan of Taftsness,
any of the Simonson's, Mary Grady
and all Faeroe Islander's.) Canny Man carried on along the empty street to the hotel. He paused outside and took one last look along the curve of the bay to his house out on the point, all windows ablaze, the dark hulk of the caravan lurking off to one side. The whitewashed walls shone with reflected light as they rose from their happing of carefully pointed-up rubble: the shell of the old herring station he'd bought and gutted and grown his new place out of.
Canny Man looked down at his hands, examined the grimy palms and thick fingers. He turned them over and looked at the skinned knuckles and chipped nails. Then he clenched them into fists and walked into the bar.

A review by Chris Donner
Advertisement document.write(''); Off in the woods, a bit away from the school, there is a bunker that overlooks the North Sea. Left over from the war, it stares blankly out at the salty water, an empty, unused shell. Rob Catto, the head janitor at the nearby high school, discovers and explores this bunker through his daily jogs and an occasional sexual escapade with his wife in the woods. He pays little attention to it though, seeing it mainly as a place where students go to skip classes and either smoke pot or have sex. Janitors are potentially the most interesting and most ignored people roaming the halls of high schools across the world. Ubiquitous and close to invisible, they scour their way through hallways and bathrooms, apparently unconcerned with the goings on around them. But to ignore them is to drop your guard when you are still being watched. To quote from The Breakfast Club , "I am the eyes and ears of this institution, my friend."

Lightning
1854 January 3
The Boston Daily Atlas Tuesday, January 31, 1854. A very similar description was printed John W. Griffth's U.S. Nautical Magazine and Naval Journal , Vol. III (1854). No timid hand or hesitating brain gave form and dimensions to the Lightning. Very great stability; acute extremities; full, short midship body; comparativily small deadrise, and the longest end forward, are points in the excellence of this ship.
John Willis Griffiths: Monthly Nautical Magazine , Vol. IV (1855), August. 1854 February 18 - March 3 Sailed Boston - Liverpool in 13 days, 20 hours under command of Captain James Nicol Forbes who had left the Marco Polo to take command of Donald McKay's new clipper. In a Letter to the Editor of the Nothern Daily Times dated, March 8th, 1854, Captain Forbes disputes a calim from Captain Eldridge of Red Jacket of having done the fastest Atlantic crossing. Not a ripple curled before her cutwater, nor did the water break at a single place along her sides. She left a wake straight as an arrow, and this was the only mark of her progress. There was a slight swell, and as she rose, one could see the arc of her forefoot rise gently over the sea as she increased her speed. Duncan McLean: Boston Daily Atlas
