"Lonesome Dove"
Lonesome Dove is the tale of the last days when cowboys drove cattle over long distances. We meet two former lawmen, Augustus McCrae and W.F.Call, who make their living by going over the Pulitzer Prize in 1986. Larry McMurtry has been writing prequels and sequels to Lonesome Dove over the past few years. I read Streets of Laredo , but didn't really enjoy it. It felt empty like it was trying to fill a spot that is left by Lonesome Dove, but it's like eating diet candy, it just doesn't match the craving for a real piece of chocolate. If you want more of Lonesome Dove, then I suggest simply re-read the book. Reviewed Amazon reader rating: from 124 reviews

Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen: Reflections at Sixty and Beyond.(Review) / (book review) Author/s: Christopher Caldwell Issue: March, 2000 OVER THE last four decades, the Texas writer Larry McMurtry, now 63, has published two dozen novels. Many of the better onesThe Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment, Texasvillehave been turned into movies and television series, and so it is hardly surprising that he has also successfully turned his hand to screenplays, in addition to keeping up a prolific career as a journalist. On top of all this, he is one of North America's major antiquarian booksellers, most recently opening a complex in Archer City, Texas, housing 250,000 used books. It was while sitting at a Dairy Queen restaurant in Archer City, McMurtry tells us, that he first read "The Storyteller," an essay on the conditions that make literature possible by the German critic-philosopher Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). Since then he has read everything of Benjamin's that is available in English, though with mild irritation. For one thing, he finds it hard to share Benjamin's own disappointment at his failure to bundle his insights into big, coherent works. But he is also puzzled, specifically, by Benjamin's belief that the telling and passing-on of good stories "presupposes a certain human and cultural density." By this reckoning, since his upbringing in northern Texas offered no cultural density at all, Larry McMurtry the novelist should not exist. In the three loosely linked essays of this book, he tries to figure out why, in fact, he does.

36. A Literary History Of The American West
Review of the author's works through Lonesome Dove .
http://www2.tcu.edu/depts/prs/amwest/html/wl0612.html
Larry McMurtry
I N 1968, sensing that he was at a juncture in his career, Larry McMurtry paused from writing novels to publish a collection of essays entitled In a Narrow Grave. From 1961 to 1966 he had published three novels that comprise a rural trilogy. All are set in Thalia, a fictional town in Archer County, Texas, where McMurtry himself was born in 1936; all deal with the decreasing significance of such rural communities. Even though he confesses in In a Narrow Grave that he has no "business setting a novel in a city, Texas or otherwise" (p. 137), his next five books are city novels in which traditional cowboys and ranchers play only minor parts. In his essays, consequently, he not only eulogizes the "passing of the cowboy" and the "god of the country"; he also bids farewell to his fiction about the cowboy "mythos" (pp. xvi–xvii). A definite pattern emerges in these eight novels that reflects what McMurtry considers to be the significant feature of contemporary Texas–and also the central fact of his own life–the migration from "homeplace to metropolis" (p. xiv). In moving from the country to the city for his setting, McMurtry shifts from a frontier where the masculine ideals prevail to a suburbia that he considers to be female. As the frontier myth disappears from history into the celluloid of Hollywood films in his fiction, the new West becomes a woman's place. In McMurtry's first novel
