Thomas Harlan Critique

Ain't nobody here but us fans...
Long before the con began, Susan Casper and Karen Haber and Ellen Datlow and I laid plans to shop South Street. I'm not an industrial strength shopper. I have to drag myself to local shops to buy things I actually need, but I love to shop South Street in Philly...as long as I've got good company (and this was the best and, no, not a sexist in the crowd because Ricky was invited, too) and my camera and as many rolls of film as I can shove into my various pockets. By the time the appointed day and hour rolled around, though, Ellen had to see a writer about a story (and couldn't schedule it anywhen else), Susan's back problem had flared up, I was cranky as hell from my signing.... Well, you get the idea. Karen was sweet enough to suggest we skip South Street and start an amoeba table where we were. So Susan and Karen and Ricky and I hung out in the bar instead and other people joined us and some left for panels and more showed up. Ours was an archetypal sf convention amoeba table. (The origin of the expression is the formlessness of shape when too many chairs are pulled up to too few tables-that and the fact that occasionally fission takes place because you can't pull one more chair up and you've got to spread it out. I've forgotten now who first came up with the expression but, when somebody in a room party turns to me and says, "It's too bloody hot in here. Wanna go down to the bar and start an amoeba table?"-I know what she means.) And a damn fine amoeba table it was, too!

74. Bridgehead
Tor had just hired beth meacham from Ace to become SF editor, and Bridgeheadlanded on her desk. I wasn't concerned about the change.
http://david-drake.com/bridgehead.html
BRIDGEHEAD was my first attempt to write what I think of as mainstream SF: a novel about a scientific experiment without any tanks or legions or swordsmen or spies. The genesis of the plot was a friend telling me about a non-sanctioned Psi experiment that was once run in the basement of the Engineering Building at Duke University. It went badly wrong, leading to the retirement of the department head. The novel was part of my first three-book contract, back in 1982. I'd written The Dragon Lord on spec, and I'd done the additional wordage for Hammer's Slammers for Jim Baen at Ace. I'd then done Time Safari , an expansion of a novella, for Jim after he'd followed Ace publisher Tom Doherty to Tor, the new company he founded; and when I turned that in, Jim asked for and I wrote a technothriller ( Skyripper At that point, I guess you'd say I became a Made Man: Jim called me, offering a two-book contract; and called back the next night, expanding the contract to three bookssubject to be determined later by agreement of the parties. (Actually, I missed his first follow-up call. When I learned that, I ran out and bought my first answering machine... a $400 investment at the time.) I had over a year's guaranteed employment laid out in front of me, more than I'd ever had with the Town of Chapel Hill where my job was a line item on the annual budget. I was a writer.
