Meng Jiao (Meng Chiao)
751-814 A.D.
One of the Tang-dynasty writers who advocated the emulation of the ancients, Meng was associated with Han Yu. He came from modern Zhejiang, passed the jinshi examination at the third attempt in 796 and in 800 took up a minor official post. By 805 he had resigned and spent the rest of his life in Loyang. His poetry is often angry and discordant, not polished and gracious like that of his contemporaries, and his poem sequences in particular can be disturbing. Later critics disliked his work intensely and he is not amongst the most popular of poets in recent centuries.

The Late Poems of Meng Chiao

Reviews Table of Contents Late in life, Meng Chiao (A.D. 751814) developed an experimental poetry of virtuosic beauty, a poetry that anticipated landmark developments in the modern Western tradition by a millennium. With the T'ang Dynasty crumbling, Meng's later work employed surrealist and symbolist techniques as it turned to a deep introspection. This is truly major work work that may be the most radical in the Chinese tradition. And though written more than a thousand years ago, it is remarkably fresh and contemporary. But, in spite of Meng's significance, this is the first volume of his poetry to appear in English. Until the age of forty, Meng Chiao lived as a poet-recluse associated with Ch'an (Zen) poet-monks in south China. He then embarked on a rather unsuccessful career as a government official. Throughout this time, his poetry was decidedly mediocre, conventional verse inevitably undone by his penchant for the strange and surprising. After his retirement, Meng developed the innovative poetry translated in this book. His late work is singular not only for its bleak introspection and "avant-garde" methods, but also for its dimensions: in a tradition typified by the short lyric poem, this work is made up entirely of large poetic sequences.

Despise poetry, and you’ll be named to office.
But to love poetry is like clinging to a mountain:
frozen, holding tight, facing death,
days of sorrow followed by sorrow.
The bourgeoisie are jealous of those
who love poetry: they flash teeth like knives.
All the old sages are long since dead, but bureaucrats still gnaw their bones. Now I’m frail, dying like a frond. All my life I sought a noble calm, a calm I could never achieve. And the noisy rabble mocked me.

In Chinese literature, the 'Wanderer's Song' is a well-known and popular poem that nicely expresses the obligation to return parental love, a conventional virtue in Chinese morality. The poem is relatively simple and easy to understand even for speakers of modern Chinese. Graham's translation runs: WANDERER'S SONG The thread in the hand of a kind mother
Is the coat on the wanderer's back.
Before he left she stitched it close
In secret fear that he would be slow to return.
Who will say that the inch of grass in his heart

I have over one hundred books of translations of Chinese poets. Hinton is able to catch the feel of a Zen religous life by a famous civil servant of the late Tang Dynasty. He captures the bitter sweet character of the life many Chinese poets chose where they were two totally different people mystics and civil servants. We can find few people in world history on which to model our lifes with more real depth than Po Chi I, Su Tung Po, and Wang Wei. Mr. Hinton's amazing, sensitive work

David Hinton Wins 1997 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award
New York City, March 20, 1997 The Academy of American Poets has awarded the 1997 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award to David Hinton for three books published in 1996: Bei Dao's Landscape Over Zero (translated with Yanbing Chen) and , both published by New Directions; and The Late Poems of Meng Chiao , published by Princeton University Press. The judge for the award was poet, translator, and editor Rosmarie Waldrop. Mr. Hinton received a cash prize of $1,000. In selecting David Hinton's books, Rosmarie Waldrop wrote: Hinton's music is subtle, modulated, and does not slacken with either contemporary or classic. He has listened to the individual tone of each poet, and his craft is equal to his perception. After the verve of the "Banished Immortal," Lí Po, the intense, dark, disenchanted introspection of Meng Chiao comes almost as a shock. Again unmistakably different, Bei Dao's broken rhythms and sense of space. Hinton has taken up Pound's challenge as well as Zukofsky's. He continues to enlarge our literary horizon. And the "range of pleasure" his translations afford "as sight, sound, and intellection" proves them true poems. Poems that breathe another culture into our English. We are richer for them.
