William M. Meredith
Secretary of the Treasury - 1849-1850 President Zachary Taylor, wanting a Pennsylvanian Whig for his cabinet, appointed William M. Meredith (1799-1873) Secretary of the Treasury. Meredith strongly opposed the free-trade legislation passed the year before under his predecessor, Robert J. Walker. He felt that there was a need to protect the American workman, who was subject to competition from poorly paid European labor. Meredith's principal contribution in office was his Annual Report of 1849 in which he set forth an elaborate argument for a protective tariff.
The increase in the public debt due to the recent war with Mexico (1846-1848) and the acquisition of California gave Meredith additional argument for raising revenue through higher import duties, but no action was taken on the tariff during Meredith's term. He also recommended a revision of the Coast Survey Code, which had not been changed since its implementation in 1806, because the Coast Survey had seen great expansion and improvement with the introduction of steam powered ships. Meredith resigned with the rest of the cabinet upon Taylor's death in 1850. Text Courtesy of the Office of the Curator

Sample Work by William Meredith
Bachelor
A mystic in the morning, half asleep,
He is given a vision of the unity
That informs a small apartment, barefooted.
He takes the long view of toes in the bath-tub
And shaves a man whose destiny is mild.
He perceives hidden resemblances; particularly
He is struck by how breakfast equipment imitates her,
The object of his less than mystic dream.
Sunlight, orange-juice. newsprint. kitchenware: Is it love's trick of doubling? Everywhere

General Meredith entered active military service in February 1941 as a private in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and after completion of basic engineer training at Fort Belvoir, Va., was assigned to the 21st Aviation Engineer Regiment at Langley Field, Va. He was transferred to the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations where he was placed in charge of construction of the Karachi and Malir airports in India. In November 1942 he was transferred to Ledo, Assam, in India, and assigned as leader of a patrol composed of Naga hillmen, with responsibility for terrain reconnaissance for the forward security over the supply trail into Northern Burma. He, Major General R.A. Wheeler and Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Seagroves (Burma Surgeon) were ambushed and trapped by Japanese forces. They were surrounded for two weeks, supplied by air drop, broke out and walked 127 miles back to Ledo, Assam. What I have most enjoyed is taking students to China with me on my research trips to that country. On my seven trips there I have taken more than 25 undergraduate and graduate students with me. It has been a wonderful experience to share a new culture with others. These trips have been life changing for many relative to their view of the world. In addition, it has been very rewarding for me to bring 20 graduate students from China who assisted me in my research to the United States to study.
