Identity Variations
Women and Canadian Science Fiction
D uring the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, women were prominent as fantasy writers, producing important fantasy works in Gothic and Arabian Nights' style. The most prolific was Lily Adams Beck, who specialized in magical tales set in far-off lands. One of the earliest Canadian fantasy novels was Flora MacDonald's Mary Melville the Psychic In English Canada, women writers, such as Pauline Gedge and Tanya Huff, have concentrated on urban, high and dark fantasy. Karen Wehrstein and Shirley Meier have collaborated with Stephen Stirling in military science fiction. Monica Hughes, Francine Pelletier and Suzanne Martel have written numerous and very popular works for young people. Critics have commented on the prominent role of women in Canadian literature from the pioneer days of Frances Moore and Susanna Moodie to the present. Women have also played a prominent role in the development of Canadian fantastic fiction. The most important Canadian woman writer of science fiction is Phyllis Gotlieb, whose short stories began appearing in American pulp magazines in the 1950s.

Soviet Sci-Fi Titles The repressive world of the former Soviet Union produced some dazzlingly imaginative science fiction books, a few of which we offer for you. The noise generated by such British luminaries as J.G. Ballard, Brian Aldiss, and Michael Moorcock often blind us to the Other New Wave. We're talking Soviet Sci Fi here, the literary Russian Invasion that never quite connected with Western readers because it is, well, so Russian . Soviet Sci Fi operated internally as more of a social literature than an entertainment venue, though entertaining it most certainly was. It found the perfect niche to critcally look at Soviet society and avoid the Gulag; what are you going to do, if you are the Authorities, ban space travel stories and robot adventures? Soviet Sci Fi is another place to Pull Your Head Out Of The Sand and do some adventurous reading...........

I first met science-fiction writer and editor Judith Merril twenty years ago, in 1977. I was a high-school student at Northview Heights Secondary School in North York, Ontario, and our school SF club was planning a science-fiction convention. It's traditional at such events to have an author designated as "Guest of Honor." We all agreed that Judith was the person we wanted. At that time, she was hosting segments of the British SF series Dr. Who We wrote Judy, inviting her to attend, and, to our delight, she agreed. The truth, though, was that at that point none of us had yet read any of her work. So we began to seek it out. We were surprised by how little of it there was, and that, even then, none of it was recent. Judy had a tiny output, almost all of which was written in the 1950s: a handful of short stories, a couple of solo novels, a couple more in collaboration with Cyril Kornbluth under the pseudonym Cyril Judd. Frankenstein Judy and I kept in touch after the convention and, in 1984, I was one of a couple dozen people to receive a copy of a letter she sent out to all the "good science-fiction heads" in the Toronto area. Judy had been noting the emergence of writers such as

Judith Merril: Obituary
Judith Merril , noted science fiction author, anthologist, and international humanist, died of heart failure on Friday, September 12, 1997, at the cardiac unit of Toronto General Hospital. She was 74. Following a private family service, the family sat Shiva at Judith's downtown Toronto apartment on Sunday and Monday, September 14 and 15. A memorial service for family and friends was held Saturday, September 20, in the Green Room of this same building and included many moving tributes, both spoken and sung. Mementos from Judith's life, such as paintings, awards, favourite foods, and her "Stop the War" banner, were on display and a selection of condolence letters was also read. A celebration of Judith's life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 1998, in recognition of her 75th birthday. At Judith's own request, everyone is invited to attend. Also, tentative arrangements are being made to bury her ashes under a tree on library property sometime in the spring. More information on both will be made available through The Merril Collection at a later date. Contributions in Judith's memory can be made to The James Tiptree Memorial Fund, which provides an annual award for feminist writing in science fiction.

Judith Merril

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

Merril is well known for works such as those collected in Daughters of Earth , and equally if not better known for her editorial work. One of her best-known short stories, "That Only a Mother" (1948), dealt with issues of nuclear power and maternal love. Concern about nuclear power, weapons, and war was an increasingly common theme in science fiction throughout the late 40s and 50s, but Merril handled it with a twist that got the attention of many. And, of course, motherhood and parenting were (and still are) sorely under-addressed in science fiction. Merril was a giant among science fiction, and proof that women have always made important contributions to the literature.
