There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

43. A Tribute To Judith Merril, By Elisabeth Vonarburg

A Tribute to Judith Merril
Elisabeth Vonarburg
When I was a little girl, the first stories I read were myths, folk-tales and legends from all over the world. And I knew what I wanted to be when I'd grow up: I wanted to be a hero. At the beginning of the Sixties, however, I was beginning to feel uneasy. The universe is a well-known, well-understood, nice, cosy and limited place, they'd told me, in school and out of it. Things are what they are, they said, it is like that, it has always been like that, it will always be like that. But somehow, it didn't feel quite right. Oh please, it couldn't be right? It was the mid-Sixties now, after all, something was blowing in the wind, and I was not immune. the Bummer. And she came. And we met, face to face. And that's it. Almost. Even today, I wouldn't presume on saying we are friends: we don't know each other personally that well, we haven't even met very often... Sometimes I feel that our essential link is of a somewhat rarefied nature: being Writers, you know, being Writers of Science Fiction, and being Women Who Write Science Fiction. For that, Judy, for being that unwavering, demanding, generous beacon for my spirit and for my heart, as you are also for so many others, thank you.

Judith Merril, 1923-1997
We are very sorry to report that Judith Merril died of congestive heart failure during the night of Friday September 12, 1997. Karl Schroeder, President of SF Canada, is quoted as saying, "I'm profoundly saddened by this news. I can't summon a fitting eulogy at this time, except to say that the last time I spoke to Judy, she told me how impressed she was by the generation of young people entering society today. 'People are better than they were when I was young,' she said. This more than anything, for me, exemplified Judy's gift; her eyes were fixed on the future with anticipation and wonder, even at the end of her life." Following is the text of Judith Merril's obituary as supplied by her family by email and as published in the Toronto Star on Sunday Sept 14/97 JUDITH MERRIL, noted science fiction author, anthologist and international humanist, died on Friday, September 12, 1997 at the cardiac unit of Toronto General Hospital in her 75th year. She is survived in the United States by daughter Merril Allen, grandsons Kevin and Gregg, and their families, and in Canada by daughter Ann Pohl and her family, including grandchildren Emily, Tobias, Julia and Daniel. The family is sitting Shiva at Judithís apartment on Sunday, September 14 from 9 am to 9 pm. and Monday, September 15, from noon to 9 pm. A memorial service for friends and family will be held on Saturday, September 20: 3-3:30 pm for quiet reflection, after 3:30 for tributes, in The Green Room, 110 The Esplanade, Toronto. For more information call 416-361-0616. A larger celebration of Judith's life will be held closer to the date she would have turned 75 (January 21, 1998) for the many people whose lives Judith touched.

A Tribute to....
Judith Merril
This has been a long time coming. Judy has been gone awhile now and the slow cobbling together of this tribute keeps resting in my "To Do" files. No longer. The best way to prod myself and to get this done is to go public with what has been done...then maybe, finally, a proper presentation will result. Not sure what shape/form it will finally become, but be assured, I will do my best to bring a bit of her out for you to visit with. She is a wonderful person to know. Hopefully my faulty/aging memories do her justice.
Some Memories of Judy
I can still smell the fresh spring air, gently splashing my face, on a morning that seems lost to another life left behind. The sun was warm and full at my back as the thread bare old shoes helped a very uncertain young fellow trod up from the foot of Beverly Street along the slow easy slope above Queen Street West in Toronto, Ontario. For some reason, the west side of the street seemed friendlier...the same side that Judy's place would be on...a hopeful haven in a strange new city.
It wasn't a long walk...just a block...and shortly I found myself steeled for the hopefully proper knock on the door. It was opened by someone who was to be many things to me in the future. A friend, a mother figure, a commrade-in-arms, a party buddy....someone with whom it was easy to pick up where we had left off after long periods of separation.

Judith Merril was a pioneer of twentieth-century science fiction, a prolific author, and editor. She was also a passionate social and political activist, one of the few strong women in a field dominated by male writers and editors. In fact, her life was a constant adventure within the alternative and experimental worlds of science fiction, left politics, and Canadian literature. Merril was an original member of the Futurians in New York City, and her memoirs are laced with anecdotes on science fiction luminaries including Damon Knight, Theodore Sturgeon, Virginia Kidd, James Blish, Michael Moorcock, and others. Better to Have Loved is illustrated with original art works, covers from classic science fiction magazines, period illustrations, and striking photography.
Emily Pohl-Weary is the granddaughter of Judith Merril and the editor of Broken Pencil, the magazine of zines.

SF Canada ARTICLES Spring, 1999 Judith Merril: Memories Like A Fairy Tale
By René Beaulieu It was at the Boréal '82 SF convention in Chicoutimi that I met Judith Merril for the first time, I mean other than through her writings. I was then a very young writer with a single book and a handful of published stories to my credit, totally unknown to the anglophone SF world. Of Judith, I had only seen, at that time, her classic "That Only A Mother" and some other short stories, only in translation, but I very much liked what she did and was extremely impressed by her talent as a writer. In fact, I was very anxious to let it be known to the author of these stories.
Judith Merrill The next day, when we met again, the first thing that Judith did was to hand me, with a smile that I will never forget, two of her books with a gesture so natural, so elegant and so generous that just remembering it today moves me all over again. Now I would be able to read her; her beautiful short stories would be accessible to me. This was a purely magical moment, free and superb, with nothing asked in return, and which left me like the stranded survivor of a shipwreck, drenched with gratitude. What class! This woman was truly a great Lady. Even before I had started to recover, we had resumed our chat of the previous day as if nothing had happened. But such was not the case, believe me. It would be an understatement to say here that I cherish the memory of these moments.

51. Judith Merril: A Great New York Canadian
Judy merril A Great New York Canadian. Being a demanding, truthtelling, lusty idealist made Judy merril seem aggressive to some.
http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman/publications/meril/article.html
Judy Merril: A Great New York Canadian Spoken by Barry Wellman at the Memorial Service, Sept 20, 1997 Performing Arts Lodge, Toronto, on the occasion of her death, Sept. 12
I've read a number of things about Judy Merril in the past week some of them true, some of them reflecting an alternative universe than the one in which I knew Judy. Judy spanned many communities but there was only one Judy and one universe.
Judy and I first met soon after she came up here. I went on a pilgrimage to the Spaced-Out's Library's early home on Palmerston Avenue to meet the woman who had dominated my boyhood reading. We clicked immediately as fellow pushy Bronxites trying to cope with a town where people say "Sorry" when you push them. Indeed, our common ancestral homeland forms the organizing framework for my thoughts now.
The Judy I knew was a member of one Canada's most useful and least recognized minorities: New York Canadians . Although Judy had definitively left New York behind when she came up she hated to go back she had also brought New York with her. What are the ethnic characteristics of Judy, the New York Canadian?
Because Judy was a Utopian idealist

The dancer, Lisa Trovi, is as worried about Johnny Wendt as the rest of his friends and former colleagues, and joins in an effort to get him back to the Moon in an attempt to get him to grapple usefully with whatever happened on Mars. Once they get to the Moon, though, Johnny reacts so badly that they scramble to get him back down to Earth as quickly as possible, with Lisa remaining behind for another week, because there aren't two berths available on this trip. And during the next week, Lisa becomes interested both in the psychological complications of long-term residence on the Moon, and in the Mars bugs that Laughlin (the expedition's biologist and medic; Wendt was the pilot, engineer, and physicist) collected and Wendt brought back, and things go sideways from there. Despite some obvious changes in background assumptions (the Cold War, and what a pregnancy outside of marriage means socially), this is still a solid, interesting, enjoyable short novel. Her short story "That Only a Mother" is not only a provocatively written story, but structurally, it functions as an excellent tool for creative writing. 1) Photocopy the first 3 pages of the story, and distribute them to the class. Avoid, if possible, explaining anything about the text to the students; let their own responses stand without mediation. 2) Direct them to read the text, and respond to it in their Response Journals if they are used in your class; otherwise have them write a response for their Writing Folders. 3) Explain that they have been given only a fragment of a complete text, and they will be responsible for the completion of the story.
